amberfocus: (Moments in Darkness)

Chapter Two: Betrayal

“And now for my next trick,” the Doctor says. She is a time machine and he knows that now of all times, he must make a little time to put things in order. So when the missiles collide and the force field works, and it looks to the Daleks like they have been destroyed, he slips into the Vortex giving himself and Jack just that little bit more of the time that is needed.

Chapter Fourteen:  U.N.I.T.

We find U.N.I.T. headquarters with my vague recollections and the Doctor manages to bluff his way in by asking if the Brigadier was about and if he was, would he mind having a word with a Dr. John Smith. It only takes moments for a response, but the man who welcomes us when we are led into an inner office is not Lethbridge-Stewart whom I had met at Christmas time while the Doctor was busy being in a coma.

Chapter Fifteen:  Can I?

I am startled that someone as obviously powerful as Brigadier General John Benton would look at an ordinary human girl for help. But then I realize it is the Doctor’s faith in me that makes him look at me that way. I close my eyes, reaching inside myself for some answer that won’t disappoint him. It is rare for me to ever meet a friend of the Doctor. I don’t want to be the one who makes him lose his hope.

Chapter Sixteen:  Sending Out the Signal

The signal has gone out mere minutes ago when reports start coming in that the Cybermen are dying. I know that this has to be done, I understand it on a gut level, and yet I still feel their deaths. The Doctor, my real Doctor, not this man beside me, has always told me I feel things too deeply, as if he didn’t approve of my caring for things.

Chapter Seventeen:  Rescue and Rebuild

The Doctor throws his body over mine, the sonic screwdriver out in one hand, making a slit in the back wall of the tent. We are far enough away from the fire on the far side of the tent that we are not hurt. The Doctor helps me to my knees and I crawl out ahead of him.

Chapter Three:  Naya

Rose had fallen asleep in the infirmary chair again and Jack and Donna had gone to bed. The soft whisper of her name woke her. “Rose?”

“Hello,” she said, blinking rapidly to clear her eyes.

“Hello,” the Doctor said back with a soft smile.

Chapter Four:  Vandarian and Tiron

When King Travenn discovered that prince Tiron had disappeared he had taken a knife and gutted the prison guards on duty that night. When he learned Jack Harkness had escaped his cell he’d slit the throats of the entire prison guard. When he discovered that his daughter Naya and two of his best horses were missing, he’d taken great pleasure in removing the heads of both the messenger and the head stableman with his ceremonial sword. And now as his chief medical man stood in front of him, telling him the plague was getting out of hand amongst his own people, he had half a mind to execute him as well.
