Chapter Sixteen:  Sending Out the Signal

The signal has gone out mere minutes ago when reports start coming in that the Cybermen are dying. I know that this has to be done, I understand it on a gut level, and yet I still feel their deaths. The Doctor, my real Doctor, not this man beside me, has always told me I feel things too deeply, as if he didn’t approve of my caring for things.

A buzz interrupts my thoughts and Benton looks down at his phone. “I have to take this,” he says. “Hello? Yates!” A look of relief sweeps over his face. “They’re what?” He pauses, listening for quite a long time. “All right. I’m sending you some help.” Another long pause. “Well, I think you’ll be happy with it. It’s the Doctor.” The response from the phone is almost loud enough to hear. Benton chuckles as he hangs up the phone.

“Yates says hi.” I can tell by the way his mouth twitches that Yates had said quite a bit more than that. “He also wanted to know, in language I’ve cleaned up for your young lady, what took you so long?”

“Just tell me where I need to go,” the Doctor says.

“Better yet, I’ll have someone take you there.”  Benton quickly orders up transport for us.

It isn’t that long a trip. Turns out Yates had been pinned down not too far away in another of the cyber factories. They’d lost a lot of their equipment in an explosion and had been unable to dig it out because of the remaining Cybermen in the area.  Once they were gone it was easy enough.

Yates is happy to see us, despite never having seen this incarnation of the Doctor. He accepts him easily as if regeneration is old hat to him. Perhaps it is. I only know it wasn’t that easy for me.

The problem is that there are more partially converted humans, like my father had been. They didn’t suicide because they are still mostly human and haven’t had inhibitor chips installed yet.

I watch as the Doctor does what he can for those with the least amount of conversion. The tougher cases are ones like my father. There are hundreds of them scattered throughout England, thousands throughout Europe.  The estimates coming in state at least one million worldwide.

“Can we get the hospital ship to come here?” I ask.

“It’s possible," replies the Doctor. "It was made for this sort of massive relief effort. It won’t hurt to ask. But it’ll cost Earth plenty.”

Yates puts in a call to Benton, who puts in a call to the Prime Minister who along with the other leaders of U.N.I.T. seek to get permission for the Doctor to act as emissary for Earth.

Permission is granted and someone drives us quickly back to my parents' flat. A short hop later and we are negotiating with the hospital ship. The TARDIS puts a specially fabricated hyper-space tow line on the hospital ship that the Doctor claims should work in the Time Vortex and we tow them behind us through several centuries and back to Earth.

The appearance of the big ship in low Earth orbit causes a lot of panic in the streets despite constant news updates and military personnel roaming the streets with bullhorns and announcing that the visitors come in peace to offer medical aid.

That is nothing to the panic that is caused when the aliens began appearing in the streets out of thin air. No one has thought what the effect might be on people who had so recently seen ‘ghosts’ turn into Cybermen.

We are in the first medical field hospital that has been set up in London when a Molotov cocktail is thrown into the tent by a panicked Londoner. Everything explodes into flames.
