Chapter Forty-four:  Reparations

Rose rang the doorbell of Donna’s house and when the other woman opened the door she said, “Someone’s missed his Auntie Donna.” She handed Dare over to her friend. “Can we come in?”

Donna stood back and gestured for the little family to come into her home. “Have you made your decision yet?” the Doctor asked anxiously.

Donna sat down on the couch and cuddled the baby. “Yes, I have. I’ll come back with you, but you only get one more chance, Doctor. If you leave me off anywhere in a fit of anger, that’s it. Got it?”

Chapter Forty-two:  Donna's Choice

Donna Noble opened her front door to see the Doctor standing there. She raised her hand threateningly and he took a step back from the door. She promptly shut it in his face. He rang the door bell again, every few seconds until she opened the door. “Git,” she said and slammed it in his face again. This time he leaned on the doorbell, not letting up.

“I can do this all day, Donna!” he shouted through the door.

Donna opened the door, reached out and grabbed him by the tie and forcefully dragged him into her house. “What do you want?” she snapped, folding her arms over her chest.

Chapter Forty:  It's Christmas Time in the City

The Doctor and Rose were both surprised to walk into the Tyler mansion and see it all done up for Christmas. “Wow,” Rose said softly, staring at the nine foot tall Christmas tree that looked like it had come out of a home magazine and noting all the presents stacked under it. “I thought we’d missed Christmas.”

Chapter Thirty-eight:  What Mums Are For

The Doctor wasn’t sure how he knew Jackie Tyler was banging on the doors to the TARDIS. No outside sound could possibly intrude into the soundproofed Zero room, and yet somehow he knew she was out there. He didn’t really think there was a link between his mind and Jackie’s, though with his sense of self-preservation when it came to the woman, he wouldn’t be surprised if he hadn’t subconsciously installed an early detection warning system.  Then again, it might have been the TARDIS telling him without really talking to him.  She wasn't too thrilled at him at the moment either.  The TARDIS was quite fond of Donna, even fonder of Rose, knew the Doctor had botched it and if she'd had shoulders she would have been giving them to him cold.

As for Jackie, his relationship with Rose’s mother ran hot and cold. Most of the time, if he was very lucky, it was simply warm these days. But he knew that if he wasn’t very careful in how he handled things, he’d end up on the receiving end of a Tyler slap and he didn’t really care to go there again, even, and he gulped, if he deserved one.  And he rather thought he did.

Chapter Thirty-six:  Fury of a Tyler Woman

Rose tucked Dare into his crib, her hand cradling against his sleeping form for a moment before she sat down on the bed and hiccupped. Vortex energy left her body and she placed her hands over her abdomen searching for the tiny mind there. She had thought Dare would never calm down and sleep. He had felt Cassi’s regeneration. She was sure of it from the state of his own little mind. Cassi’s she couldn’t feel at all other than an unconscious turmoil and she had to seek hard to feel even that.

Tears fell down her face, had been falling since she’d walked into the TARDIS. Her child had just lost 1/12th of her lifespan in the space of five minutes and she didn’t know who she was madder at. Herself for taking the risk without knowledge, or her husband for failing as usual to give her the information she needed to make the right choices and refusing to ever deviate from what he thought was right. Not even for her.

Chapter Thirty-four:  Five Minutes on a Stopwatch

The heart monitor’s line went flat and Jack started the stopwatch with a flick of his thumb. The scream from the conference room made the Doctor’s head whip around, and he felt the link with his son flare into life as the baby shrieked out his pain and despair. He sensed, too, the tiny life growing in his wife’s body as it struggled and writhed within her womb.

“I need you here, Doctor!” Owen said sharply as the Doctor stepped away from Donna.

“I’ll check on it,” said Gwen.

Chapter Thirty-two:  Broken Heart

The Doctor awoke cold and alone in his bed, the warmth of his wife missing. His internal time sense told him he had slept for ten hours. He knew he must have needed it if he’d slept for so long but Rose should have woken him up when she got up. She knew how worried he was about Donna.

Or perhaps that was why she had let him sleep. If there’d been no change, well, he wouldn’t worry while he was sleeping. That was the likeliest explanation. Rose probably figured she was well able to worry for the both of them. He decided that he might as well take a quick shower and put on a fresh suit. It would have to be the blue one though, and he knew Rose didn’t like it.

Chapter Thirty:  The Power Over Life and Death

The next morning Rose was able to get up and around, though she still felt sore. Not being able to use the tissue regenerator right away after her injury meant that it had partially healed the old fashioned way and some of the nerves had twisted. It would take a lot of time under that machine to reverse that damage but right now, it was Donna who needed the machine the most, so Rose would hold off on fixing her own injury for a while.

She took in a deep breath as the nerves twinged but it passed after a few seconds and she continued across the room to where Donna lay, the Doctor sitting beside her and holding one hand. Rose rested her hands on his shoulders. “Any improvement?” she asked him.

Chapter Twenty-eight:  Hunting Truths

The Doctor strode up to the Chieftain who had just finished blessing the hunters and sending them off to the hunt moments before the Doctor came through the back door. “You have stolen a member of my family from me,” the Doctor accused, his voice dark and cold. “I want her back. Now!”

The Chieftain looked up at him with clear, glittering eyes. “What has been done cannot be undone,” he said with a twisting smile. The sound of horns filled the village. “The hunt begins.”

“Call them off,” said the Doctor menacingly. “Do it now.”
