Do you have a British organization like the Boy Scouts of America?  I know you have Girl Guides instead of Girl Scouts, but what is it for boys?  Thanks.

They have Boy Scouts. Scouting was originally a British institution, IIRC.

Okay I'm jealous.
It looks like they don't have Boy/Girl Scouts.
Why can't America just have Scouts?

They have Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. Separate, just like the US. (And girls can join Boy Scouts of America, btw. :) )

Since when?
My brother was a boy scout and I had to join a Girl Scout troop. (bratty girls are bratty/I was only there to sell cookies)

But I guess if I had been in the Boy Scouts they wouldn't have let me sell the Cookies. Cause besides the Girl Scout Camp (which I found out I didn't have to be a Girl Scout to go to) that was the only reason I joined.

My sister was in a Boy Scout troop for a while when she was younger. Mostly because she was determined never to be left behind, and there weren't any Girl Scout troops in our area. This was in, oh, the mid '70s? I was little.

I think the Brady Bunch did a (terribly sexist, of course) episode where the girls wanted to join the Boy Scouts so they could prove they could do anything the boys could. It's been around for a while.

Well I'm not 100% sure of Boy Scouts, but my daughter regularly participates in my son's Cub Scout pack. A parent must attend all meetings and register with the cub scout. So loads of other siblings attend meetings too.
And I know boys can join Girl Scouts as my troop has had them. (Ok he was the head leader's son and it was more for insurance reasons, but he was a registered member of the troop)

It's just Scouts here. And girls can join as well as boys, although most girls would just join guides :)

We have Scouts / Cub Scouts, and we have Girl Guides / Brownies, which are the female equivalent.

However, just to confuse things, girls have been able to join the Scouts since the early nineties.

Girls can join Boy Scouts in the US too. I was in an Explorer troop sponsored by the local hospital from ages 14-21 (that would have been starting around 1980). Explorers are more career oriented than other senior scout troops, depending on who sponsors them they can be police, fire, sheriff, emergency services, or medical oriented. If you see teenagers with police or fire persons or they allow underage volunteers, that is probably how they do it by sponsoring a troop.

I was the troupe leader for my son when he was a Tiger Scout, so I know a little bit about the history. The Scouts were actually founded in the UK, and then copied in the U.S. around 1910. I used to live in England, and they also have a really cool youth group called the Duke of Edinburgh program for 14-up.
