An Update on my Aunt
Jul. 13th, 2009 11:58 amMy mother called me last night to tell me that it is unlikely that her sister will survive the week, probably won't make it until Thursday. The congestive heart failure has barely improved with the medication and now she's got kidney failure that dialysis is not an option for or not working for because of some kind of complication with her diabetes. Mom spent a long time talking to the doctors and in the end signed a DNR, or do not resuscitate order.
Chris comes home on Thursday so it'll be good to have him around as support. Especially for my mother who can't exactly lean on Dad, who won't remember five minutes later what is going on. Have me and Chris there will help. I'm going in to see her today. She sounded so tired on the phone. She'll make the drive to see her sister on Tuesday. She's been twice since she found out about the CHF, but my aunt has been unresponsive the entire time. It's more about Mom saying good-bye than anything.
As for my husband's grandfather, they gave him radiation after all, but at least not chemo, on the cancer lesions on his back to make him more comfortable, left the lung cancer, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer alone, and he's gone back to the nursing home. I was told he'd be going into hospice but I guess they changed their minds. They are still saying 2 months to live. He's in his 80's. I hope someone has signed a DNR on him, too, but knowing his wife and daughter it's entirely possible they'll still try to extend his life even though he's in bad daily pain and is completely terminal.

Let ne know if there is anything I can do to help. Even if it's just listening to you vent about annoying relatives.
