Chapter Fourteen: Shifts in Perception
Rose sat up abruptly, trying to focus on what had awakened her. At first she thought it had been Dare because of the familiarity, but as her mind searched in his direction, she felt his mind closed to her in sleep. She unwrapped her naked, sweaty body from the Doctor’s tangled limbs and he stirred, his eyes opening and focusing slowly on her with heavy lids.
“What is it?” he asked her with gentle concern.
Rose bit her lip. “I don’t know. I feel like someone’s calling out to me, asking me for help.”
“No, he’s still sleeping.” Rose stiffened as the call was suddenly repeated, shafting through her mind in pain.
“Rose?”
She shook her head, her hands shaking free of the Doctor as she raised them to her temples. “She needs me.”
“She?” The Doctor’s eyes widened as he realized who she meant. “No, Rose, that’s what happened before. She needed you and you went and you lost your memories there.”
“She needs me!” Rose insisted. “She’s me. I have to! He needs me, too. They need both of us!” Her hand came back and grabbed his and he felt the link between them flare to life and shoot forward through the Void to join minds foreign yet familiar.
They raced through the darkness, gold and silver firing around them, lighting their way as the pull of two other minds held them tight. Their thoughts focused from four, to two, to one and Rose saw her alternate self being attacked by a monster she suddenly recognized, though seconds before she had been sure she’d never seen it’s like before.
“He’ll kill her!” shouted Rose flaring gold in the direction of her other self, winding the protection around the younger girl, helping to bring the golden strands around the fragility of her life. “Help me, Doctor! She’s pregnant!” She felt the Doctor’s strength suffuse her, felt him lend support to her other self as well, shot it forward to protect the baby as the alien Sower sought to destroy the contents of the young woman’s womb.
Strengthened thus, the four of them merged into a tight focus, lending the younger girl power enough to tear a hole in reality and shove the Sower back through it, his green form dissolving completely into a misty light. The fabric of space time was knit roughly closed and they lingered for a moment in the girl’s mind.
“Have it back now,” the girl told her. “And thank you for it. It saved me.”
Power shot through Rose’s head and everything went black.
When Rose awoke, she was lying in the Doctor’s arms, still naked, still in the garden. Her eyes opened slowly at the horrible ache in her head. “Hello,” the Doctor said, his warm brown eyes carefully searching out her own.
“Hello,” she said slowly. “My head.”
“Yeah. It’ll ache for a bit. You’re a marvelous creature, love of my life.” He smiled tenderly at her.
“You always say that,” Rose told him, snuggling closer. “Usually when you want something from me, but…” Rose shot up. “You always say that!” she repeated. She turned to him in wonder. “Doctor, you always say that!”
“Rose?” He stared at her, unblinking, barely daring to hope.
“Yes, Doctor. It’s me. I’m me again. I’m me. I remember.” She burst into tears and buried her face in his chest. He held her tightly, the tension of the last weeks evaporating as she gasped out words. “I love you. I love you so much. My love, my life, my all. Oh, Doctor, Andevorantil, beloved, I love you.”
“Shh, shh, it’s okay, love. I love you, too. You’re okay now. You’re okay.” His hearts raced in his chest as his mind approached hers, saw the full familiar beauty of his wife’s thoughts, nothing hidden, nothing missing, nothing gone.
“Oh, Rose, it’s really you. You’re really you again.” She raised her face to his and he began to kiss away her tears. “Oh, Rose, my dear darling Rose, you’ve come back to me.”
When her tears were gone, she cupped his face with her hands and stared into his eyes, fully open to him. She was about to request he make love to her again when the stirrings of Dare’s mind intruded on that lovely thought. With a little moue of disappointment she said, “Baby’s waking.”
They began searching through the grass for discarded pieces of clothing and once dressed the Doctor jumped to his feet, pulling Rose up quickly. They made their way out into the corridor where they met a sleepy Donna just coming out of their bedroom with a yawning Dare cradled in her arms.
“You okay?” Donna asked.
“Better than okay,” Rose said, taking the baby from her friend’s arms. “I got my memories back.”
“You must be some lover, Doctor,” Donna commented.
The Doctor blushed to the tips of his ears. “Well, erm… yes,” he said.
“Oh, he is, but the memories came back for a very different reason,” said Rose. “Which we’ll tell you about tomorrow. Thanks for listening out for Dare.”
Donna yawned, nodded, and smiled at the glowing couple. “Try not to be too noisy,” she said as she slipped into her room. “Some of us need to get some more sleep. And unlike your son, I can’t sleep through anything.”
Rose laughed and walked back into their room, settling onto their bed and opening her top. She placed Dare easily to her breast and smiled up at the Doctor. “It’s nice not to feel self-conscious about feeding him in front of you,” she said. “I was so nervous that day I let down my guard and let you watch.”
The Doctor swallowed. “Thank you for doing that, Rose. I think it was the first time I honestly believed I wasn’t going to lose you, that you would stay with me despite everything. And then afterwards…” He smiled as he remembered.
“Yes,” she grinned, “Afterwards. I felt like such a wanton thing. But I needed you badly. I didn’t understand how I could be feeling such things when I hardly knew you. That bonding link must have fed that a great deal.”
“It did. That’s part of what made it difficult. It was really hard, Rose, having you here and not having you here. I missed you so much.”
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“Please don’t apologize. It’s not your fault.”
“I know, but somehow I feel like it is,” she explained.
“It just happened, Rose. Your compassion and your heart sought to protect that girl. She’s a much more fragile version of you. You put those two together. Of course, you feel responsible for them.”
“You’re a little too understanding, Doctor.”
He smiled halfway. “Practice. I would, however, appreciate it if you asked before hijacking my mind next time.”
“I didn’t really know what I was doing. I just needed you with me and then we were going. And I don’t think it’ll happen again. I don’t think she needs me anymore,” Rose said thoughtfully. “But I will ask, if it ever becomes necessary.”
Rose switched Dare to her other breast and the baby resumed his feeding. “I feel like I’ve been away from you for a very long time.”
“Me, too. We have a lot of lost time to make up for.”
“I don’t think that’s going to be a problem. Soon as this child of ours goes back to sleep, I’d like you to make love to me. Me as me. Completely in my right mind again. Think you can rise to the challenge?” Rose teased.
The Doctor looked down at his lap. “Somehow, I don’t think that’s going to be a problem.”
Chapter Fifteen: Of Lusty Wenches and Pirate Captains
When Dare had fallen back to sleep, Rose placed him in his crib, giving him a loving pat and tucking his blanket securely about him. She turned around to see the Doctor had managed to strip himself of all of his clothing in the amount of time since she’d gotten up to put Dare back down to sleep. She could tell round two was definitely not going to be a problem.
“Come here you lusty wench,” he growled at her.
Rose had a hysterical fit of the giggles. “Lusty wench?” she gasped when she could get control of herself again. “Have you been dipping into my trashy romance novels again, Doctor?” she accused.
The Doctor had the nerve to not even look embarrassed. “Your fault, Rose Tyler. I read that one to you while you were pregnant and now I can’t help myself. Off with the clothes, please.”
“Just like that? No romancing the girl?” Rose said, the giggles starting to rise up in her throat again.
He growled again. “Now I know that happens to be your favorite garment, Missy, so I suggest, if you don’t want it torn to shreds, you divest yourself of it.”
Rose’s face broke out in a wide grin as she finally cottoned on to what the Doctor was doing. He was playing out one of the scenes from her trashy romance novels. Well, she had promised him all those weeks ago that if he’d read them to her while she was on bed rest, she’d act out some of the choicer scenes with him when she was recovered.
She put a serious look on her face, “Oh, but captain, what of my virtue?” She pressed the back of her hand to her forehead.
“You’re virtue is of no import to me,” he said sternly. “Only your body beneath mine. Now, do as I say saucy wench or I shall tear the clothing from your beautiful body.”
Rose pouted and took a few steps closer to the bed. “Perhaps…” She batted her eyelashes shyly at the Doctor. “Perhaps I am too shy to undress myself before your eyes.”
“I have no intention of closing them.” He rose from the bed and started towards her.
Rose gave a quiet squeal so as not to wake the baby and fled to the far side of the bed, only to be pursued into the corner and be held up against the wall. The Doctor’s arms came down on either side of her, firmly against the sides of her breasts. She felt his hot breath on her neck and then his lips were settling just above her collar bone. His hands began to roam up and down her body.
When she let out a little moan he pushed her harder against the wall, his hips pushing into her, letting her feel his desire. “You are a temptress, Miss and I no longer wish to be tempted.”
His hands moved under her short gown, divesting her of her knickers. “Oh, captain, please…if anyone finds out, I’ll be tossed into the street.”
“Oh, no, my sweet girl. You are mine now. I stake my claim. You are with me.” He punctuated each sentence with a kiss. “And I will keep you forever.” His mouth came down hard on hers, kissing her lustily and without mercy. His fingers slipped beneath the gown again to test her readiness and he groaned at what he found. Lifting her up, he pushed between her thighs and slid into her welcoming warmth. She squirmed delightedly, putting her hands on his shoulders to balance herself as he took her thoroughly and well against the wall.
Afterwards the Doctor carried her across the room and they fell laughing onto the bed. “Now that was different,” the Doctor said, his manic grin echoed by the one on her own face. They rolled so they were face to face and wrapped their arms around each other.
“But very, very fun. Have I mentioned to you before how very much I like wall sex?” Rose asked him. “And wall sex with my no-nonsense, take charge, firm and to the point, pretending to be a space pirate, husband? Even better.” She pushed her hips against his.
“Again, Rose Tyler?” he asked. “There’s only so much flesh can manage, you know.”
She wiggled against him again. “Seems like you’re managing just fine to stand up to the occasion.”
“No more standing,” the Doctor said. “Just a little weak in the knees at the moment. Lying down, however…” He trailed off at the expectant gleam in her eyes. His mouth found hers and he rolled over with her until she was on her back. “I love you,” he said. “Out of your right mind or in it, I love you.”
“I love you, too, Doctor.” She sighed then gasped as he sheathed himself within her once more. A slow smile spread over her face and she decided she was going to have to dig out one of the novelty t-shirts she’d gifted him with shortly after they’d first made love. He was definitely going to deserve wearing it tomorrow.
Eventually they did sleep and when morning came and it was time to feed Dare again, Rose ached in muscles she didn’t know she had. But what a pleasant ache it was. After taking care of the baby and handing him off to Donna for a bit, Rose took a shower with the help of her very eager husband, then had to take a second shower to clean off the results of the first shower. She’d forgotten for a bit what happened when the Doctor flipped that particular switch. He turned into a hormonal sex machine. Not that she was complaining, but really, she needed to be able to walk.
When they dressed, she convinced him not to wear his usual suit, instead laying out a pair of black jeans and the black t-shirt with blue letters that said “Time Lords Do it All Night Long.”
“Fine, Rose, but I’m wearing the suit coat over it!” She pouted but gave in as he tugged the blue suit coat on and buttoned it up. Well, at least she had gotten her way on the jeans so she could look at his tight bum all day if she wanted to.
Sighing she shook her lusty thoughts out of her head and went to the kitchen to retrieve her baby and eat breakfast. After another one of Donna’s brilliant meals, the four of them headed back to Torchwood.
They met Gwen in the travel office and she unlocked the secret passageway for them and they walked down to the Torchwood hub to check on Jack.
“He’s all right,” said Owen. “Although he still has too many excitotoxins and neurotoxins circulating through his brain they’ve fallen by twenty-five percent. “That creature did a number on him. But he’s going to be just fine. Still, not good enough to help with your memory retrieval.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Rose said with a cheerful smile at Owen. “I remembered everything last night.” She looked at the Doctor with such a look of arousal that he shifted slightly.
“Well, if I’d known all it took was a good shag, I’d have offered it myself,” Owen said.
He took a step back at the Doctor’s look. “What have I told you about coming on to my wife?”
“Erm…not the safest thing for me to do if I wanted to keep all my manly parts?” Owen squeaked.
“Exactly.”
“Sorry, Rose,” he apologized hastily.
“He can’t help it,” said Tosh. “Sometimes his inner git just comes out.”
Rose rolled her eyes. “Wouldn’t matter. Not any shag would have done it. It had to be a spectacular one.”
“Oi!” said Owen insulted. “I’m not just any shag!”
"So he claims," muttered Tosh darkly.
“Maybe you are and maybe you’re not, but you aren’t the Oncoming Storm in the bedroom, now are you?” she giggled. “And it was more complex than that anyway. But suffice it to say, I’ve got them back. Can we see Jack?”
“Yeah, sure. Ianto’s in with him now. We’re taking it in shifts to sit with him. Except Ianto's forgotten what the concept of shift is. See if you can get him to take a break, will you Rose?" Owen asked.
Rose nodded and headed off to see Jack. “Hey, beautiful,” Jack said as Rose entered the room.
“Hi, Jack,” she said, giving him a genuine smile.
“You remembered?” He knew instantly from the way she was looking at him that she did.
“Yeah, sorry about the martial arts thing,” she apologized, reaching out and taking Jack’s hand. In all the universe, Jack’s hand was the only one she’d ever held that even came close to how hers fit with the Doctors. Close, but definitely not a perfect match.
“Oh, I deserved it,” he said with good humor. “The Doctor’s warned me over and over again. I always thought it was him who’d knock me down, though.”
“Ianto, why don’t you go get something to eat? And maybe take a nap? You look like a right fine mess at the moment,” Rose suggested.
“I’m fine, Rose,” he said tiredly.
“Really?” Rose asked. She held up her hand. “How many fingers am I holding up?”
Ianto looked at her and tried to focus, hazarding a guess. “Three?”
“Nice try. Go get some sleep.”
Ianto stumbled from the room at Rose’s gentle push.
"How many fingers were you holding up?" Jack asked as he'd been unable to see.
"Three," Rose said with a grin. "But he looked shagged. And not in the good way. He been here all night?” Rose asked.
“Yeah. He didn’t want to leave me. He’s still somewhat attached to me, even though he knows about Andromeda.”
“Doesn’t she mind?” Rose asked curiously.
“Ah, well, Dromee’s pretty open-minded.” Rose’s jaw fell open. “I didn’t mean like that,” Jack said. “She just understands the situation, that’s all and she doesn’t begrudge Ianto his feelings. Or me, mine. It’s only been a few months since I found out about her, you know. Things are…odd.”
“But working out?” Rose questioned.
“They will do,” said Jack. “I’m not losing her.”
“Owen says you’re doing better.”
Jack coughed a little bit and then smiled at her. “Yeah, I don’t feel just this side of death anymore, so that’s always good. Owen won’t let me out of bed yet though.”
“Bed rest is never fun. Donna brought you some puzzle books. Said you could put your mind to something other than internet porn for a change.”
Jack laughed. “I don’t know where Donna has managed to get the impression that I’m nothing but a randy immortal.”
Rose giggled. “Oh, she knows. But she also knows just how much you are the randy immortal.” Donna appeared then with a tray of food. She sat down on the far side of the cot and waited until Jack sat up in bed before putting the tray over his lap.
“You strong enough to feed yourself or do you need help?” Donna asked seriously.
Rose schooled her features into a blank mask as Jack said pitifully that he thought he needed help and asked Donna to feed him. “I better see if the Doctor needs help with Dare,” Rose said, hastily exiting the room as Donna began to spoon soup into Jack’s mouth.
If Donna found out that Jack was faking, well…she wouldn’t want to be in the room with them. Rose burst into giggles as soon as she was out of earshot. When it came to Donna, Jack just never learned.
