“What is that?” I ask the Doctor in horror not wanting to believe my eyes.

“It’s a conversion table. Oh, no, Rose. They must have run out of time, started converting whole people instead of just putting their brains in a cyber suit, just to get more soldiers out there.” The Doctor looks sick.

Chapter Seven:  Help Me

My father is strapped to a conversion table, a helmet clamped onto his head, but you can still see his face, still see the pain and fear on it. It seems frozen that way. He looks dead.  If I hadn't heard him call for Mum, I'd be sure of it just by looking. Parts of the cyber suit appeared to be welded to his chest and his legs are encased in it.

I fling my body protectively over my father’s, but the roof collapse just misses us. I hear my mother cry out. I look up in time to see her fall backwards, her hand raised to her head. “Mum!” I scream leaving him to run to my mother’s side.

I pace the halls for hours, my nerves shot, while I wait for news on my father’s condition. The Doctor has tried reassuring me, but his too tender words confuse me, reminding me that he isn’t acting the way he used to and I so desperately don’t want to think about that.
