Chapter Eight: Rescue
I fling my body protectively over my father’s, but the roof collapse just misses us. I hear my mother cry out. I look up in time to see her fall backwards, her hand raised to her head. “Mum!” I scream leaving him to run to my mother’s side.
She sits up looking dazed and gives me a weak smile. There is blood on her head from where falling debris has struck her. “I’m all right, Rose,” she says, but I can hear pain in her voice.
The TARDIS materializes and the Doctor throws himself out the doors. “I’m going to need both of you to help me move this,” he says pulling at the conversion table and raising it so it is upright. "We have to hurry. Soldiers are blowing up anything that reeks of Cybermen." The three of us shove it into the TARDIS, then I lock the door behind us as the Doctor programs the computer.
“I’m taking us to the future. There’s a hospital ship in the 32nd century that can reverse the cyberization process if it hasn’t gone too far,” he explains
“Let’s hope it hasn’t gone too far!” Mum says.
The Doctor looks up at her with a tight smile, then notes her wound. “Come on, Jackie, let’s get you patched up.”
Mum looks at Dad like she can’t stand to leave him. “I’ll be with him, Mum. Get yourself taken care of.” I stand next to Dad’s free hand and take it in mine. There is no response from my father, and I have to feel for a pulse just to reassure myself he is still alive.
The Doctor and my mum come back into the console room a few minutes later, Mum with a sticky plaster on her forehead and a slightly glazed look. “Gave her a painkiller and a sedative,” the Doctor says softly at my questioning look. Mum comes and takes Dad’s hand from me and I move over by the Doctor who pulls me against his side in a one-armed hug.
“How long is it going to take to get to this hospital ship?” I ask him.
“We should be there within the hour,” he replies.
“Is my dad going to survive this?” I want to know. I shift around making him meet my eyes.
“I’ll do everything I can to make sure he does.” He pulls me back against him, turning me into him completely and hugging me tightly. “I promise, Rose. I’ll do everything I can.”
