amberfocus: (Fringe--Peter and Olivia)

The first seven episodes of this season of Fringe has done fans no favors. First, Peter wasn't even in the first four episodes, and lets face it, Joshua Jackson's charm is a very big factor in why this show has been so good the first three seasons. We are treated to a third alternate universe, with characters that are just different enough that we don't even really care about them anymore. Then to add insult to injury the show takes a freaking long hiatus.

Well, tonight it was back and I wasn't even sure I wanted to watch it. I have been so disappointed by the lackluster characterization of yet another Olivia and another Lincoln and another Walter and I just didn't care about the sorry plots. Nothing made sense anymore. The show seemed to have strayed from everything that made it amazing in the first place. It felt like...it felt like I'd fallen in love with this fantastic show, it had gone great for a few years and then in a horrible about face, I no longer recognized the show as even being the same thing. It was like it had been taken over by an entirely different show runner. It felt like...Doctor Who these last two seasons.

I gave in to hope and I watched it anyway, and I am so glad I did. The show is back with a bang and I care again. We got to see universe #2 again, the universe with the Zeppelins. We got to see Olivia #2 again and Walternate. And we got a major advancement in characterization with Walternate. And most importantly Peter no longer feels impotent. He feels proactive again. And I think he might actually have a chance of making it home. Now if only it will keep up like this and we get at least a glimpse of universe #1 again.

I agree. I was hesitant about last night's return for the show as well, but within the first five minutes, my hope was restored. Last night's episode reminded me why I would cry so badly if this show doesn't get a final fifth season. Peter was kicking butt, both versions of Lincoln were being interesting, Altlivia was AMAZING, and even amber!Olivia seemed more like the original Olivia we all know and remember.

To be honest, I was shocked to like Walternate for the first time ever. I mean, I was never really interested in the original Red!verse Walternate. It was always felt like Pinkner and Wyman were trying to re-create Alias's Sloane character, only he wasn't as likable or interesting. FINALLY, he is.

And they brought back Brandonate and Elisabeth, and you can't go wrong there, so far as I'm concerned. And I can't wait to find out who the bad guy really is and how September got shot. And Peter's reaction if he ever finds out that even his sacrifice won't allow for Olivia to live in the end? My heart is breaking just imagining it.

Finally, it is the show I remember! (Maybe it's because it was written by David Fury last night, and he wrote most of 24, and if there was one thing 24 was good at, it was writing some amazing twists.)
