“My name is Barbara Wright Chesterton. My late husband Ian for whom you are named,” she nodded at her grandson, “and I were the first two humans to travel with a strange old alien man called the Doctor. Only the Doctor.” She smiled at Rose. “We didn’t come on board voluntarily. He kidnapped us and then his ship refused to take us home! But despite all that, it was a glorious adventure travelling about time and space with him and his granddaughter. We came to respect the old man a great deal, though we never formed any deep affection for him.”

Ian drove towards Torchwood 1, his hands gripping the steering wheel grimly. He had only read enough of the file to know that he had to get to Rose and get her out of that building to someplace they could talk freely. Torchwood was no longer safe. If it ever had been. His eyes were drawn to the file sitting on the passenger seat and he wearily forced them back on the road.

To those who didn’t know her, which was pretty much everyone but her mum and Mickey, she looked just like she was staring off into space daydreaming, but little things would give it away to those who knew what to look for. The way she cocked her head to the side, furrowed her brow just a bit, and allowed her focus to shift to a level that allowed her to be completely aware of her surroundings if an emergency should arise, but to tune out the unimportant otherwise.

They were met on the roof by a man and woman dressed in well-fitting suits. “I’m Owen Harper, this is my partner Gwen Cooper, the rest of the team is already on site,” the man said in a businesslike manner. Rose and Ian introduced themselves and then Owen said, “This way please.”
They followed him to a black SUV, kitted out with all kinds of fancy computer gear and tracking electronics. Gwen turned around in her seat and looked hard at Rose. “How do I know you?” Gwen asked her.

“There are pieces, so many pieces to the puzzle, Rose. But I left it there for you to find, oh, such a long time ago. It’s almost time. And when it comes all you have to do is Remember Us, our place in time. What we were. What we are. What we will be. It’s not a dream. Keep your eyes open and believe. And trust him. That’s key. And speaking of keys, do you still have it?”
Rose came awake with so much adrenalin pumping in her body that she fell off the bunk before she got her bearings. Her heart was beating a mile a minute and she knew that something monumental had just happened, beyond that she had dreamed of him. “Doctor,” she whispered.

Ian McCullen was chasing a memory. Or at least he was trying to. He couldn’t have been more than four or five years old at the time, sitting on his Gran’s lap and fiddling with the funny silver pendant she wore around her neck. It was the first day he remembered seeing what Rose Tyler had called a time corridor. This one had been red, though most of the ones afterward had been blue.
He’d asked Gran what it was and she’d gotten a peculiar look on her face. “It’s a secret, Ian,” she told him. “But they won’t hurt you.”
