                                                                            Chapter One

“Doctor?” Rose knocks hard on the door to the Doctor’s bathroom. “Open the door.”

“No!” he calls back sharply. “Go away, Rose.”

“Let me in,” she insists rattling the doorknob.

“No,” he repeats stubbornly.

“I told you,” Jack says. “He’s being completely unreasonable.”

“I am not,” shouts the Doctor.

“He’s just embarrassed. He doesn’t want you to see what happened to him,” Jack tells her.

“What did happen?” Rose asks curiously.

“He got doused in--.”

“Jack!” growls the Doctor desperately through the door. “Rose doesn’t need to know!”

“—purple body glitter and he can’t get it off,” continued Jack.

“Jack!”

Rose sighs and rolls her eyes at the ceiling. “What on earth were the two of you doing that the Doctor got covered in purple body glitter?”

Jack looks down sheepishly at the floor. “It was a defense mechanism,” Jack admits. “I got into some trouble with a local girl, snuck into her bedroom and let’s just say her father is a tad overprotective of her virtue and caught me. The Doctor had to break me out of his home and…well, you know those dye bags they put in with money when criminals steal them from banks?”

Rose nods. “It was like that. When we tried to exit the house via the girl’s bedroom window the Doctor got sprayed. His body shielded me from the brunt of it. It penetrates the clothing and stains the skin. The effect is temporary. It should only last a couple of weeks. Which is usually long enough on this planet to track down a man accused of taking a girl’s virtue.”

“You didn’t?” Rose asks.

“No, I didn’t. She lied to me about her age. Soon as I figured it out, I was on my way out of there. But it was too late. Her father had found me out, locked me up and was going to turn me over to the local constabulary come morning. The Doctor wasn’t just going to leave me there--.”

“Should have!” snaps the Doctor through the door.

“The girl helped him rescue me and then was sneaking us out of the house when the Doctor got thoroughly sprayed.”

“Doctor, it’ll be okay. We can get it off,” Rose assures.

“Won’t come off. I tried,” he says grumpily.

“Let me try,” she says softly.

“No. Go away, Rose. Leave me alone!”

Stung, Rose shakes her head and moves away. “Come on. Let’s leave the Doctor to his own devices. I’m sure the TARDIS will help him figure things out. We’re going now, Doctor,” she says. “We’ll leave you to your sulk.”

“Not sulking!”

“Could’ve fooled me,” she shoots back and stomps overly loudly out of the room, Jack following in her wake.

It is three days later and the Doctor still hasn’t come out of his bedroom. At least he hasn’t emerged when Rose and Jack are awake. They know he’s been about because there are crumbs on the kitchen table and dishes in the sink that neither one of them has put there.

Rose sighs as she takes care of the mess. She really is starting to miss the Doctor something fierce. His embarrassment is ridiculous. It has only been two weeks since he’d seen her naked and he had had to wash a bright orange and red paralytic poison paint from off her skin. She’d seen him naked, too. Well, to an extent. She hadn’t really been able to do much in the way of looking down and taking advantage of the situation. Not that she’d have done so, not really, not when he didn’t share her feelings for him in quite the same way. Still, that had to be way more embarrassing than a little body glitter, didn’t it?

He can’t possibly think she’d make fun of him after all he’d done to preserve her modesty and dignity. Doesn’t he even have an inkling of how she feels about him? She knows he feels something for her, just what exactly is never quite obvious. Oh, she knows that the Doctor loves her in his own way. Not as a pet like some people have implied over the time she’s known him, and certainly not as a lover ‘cause they’ve never been like that, but as a best friend. Someone he relies on and needs and counts on to have his back. Someone he definitely wants around on a more or less permanent basis. He just isn’t in love with her. She can be his plus one but the Doctor plus Rose is never going to equal a couple. And that is okay. She can live with that in exchange for the life they lead. Not that waiting for him to come out of his room is much of a life. She sighs.

It’s just that sometimes…when he takes care of her, when he allows his defenses to drop, it gives her deep, gasping moments of hope that take her breath from her lungs and vanquish the common sense right out of her head and leave her with a want that is so staggering in it’s sheer need of him that it blinds her, deafens her, makes her ache for him. It isn’t easy, loving him like this, knowing they’ll never be anything but the closest of friends. Still, it’s worth it. At least it is if she gets to see him. Three days is too long. She misses him.

Jack finds her in the kitchen cleaning up. He’d gone out several hours earlier in search of some sort of remedy, because he agreed with her that the Doctor could not spend the remainder of two weeks locked in his room, only coming out when the two of them were sleeping. “Find anything?” Rose asks hopefully.

“Yeah. Found a lady who runs a brothel. They’ve allowed ‘glittered men’ to hide out there as necessary and she’s experimented with a lot of lotions and creams over the years to try to eliminate the dye.” He removes a clay pot from a pouch that hangs at his belt and hands it over to Rose. “Guaranteed to take away the purple sparklies or she’s not Lady Esarot of the Gliskar clan. It better work considering how many credit chips it cost me. He needs to cover every inch of his skin with it and then leave it on for at least five minutes but no longer than ten and then thoroughly rinse it off.”

Rose takes the pot from him and says, “Thank you, Jack. Now go make yourself scarce. It’s going to be hard enough for me to get the Doctor to let me help him without you leering at us over my shoulder.”

Jack pouts. “You know, he wouldn’t let me help clean you up when you got painted either. How come I never get in on Doctor/Rose naked play time?”

Rose glares at him. “It wasn’t fun, Jack, and it certainly wasn’t play time. They nearly killed me. I couldn’t move. I could barely breathe. I sure as hell didn’t need you taking advantage of the situation and the Doctor doesn’t need you doing it right now with him!”

Jack holds up his hands. “Whoa. I was teasing, Rose. You know you two sure get grouchy about certain things.”

“Jack!”

“Okay, okay, I’m sorry. You know I’d never take advantage of you unless you wanted me to.”

“I know,” she says the anger leaving her voice as quickly as it had come. “Jack, that was just…one of the scariest things I’ve ever been through. I’ve faced down Slitheen and a Dalek and Mum on a bender, but I never really thought I was going to die before. And no, this isn’t as serious as that. The only thing damaged here is the Doctor’s pride, but that means a lot to him and I…I owe him for helping me.”

Jack nods slowly. “Yeah. Okay. I’ll leave you to it. There was a very interesting bartender down the street from the brothel I wouldn’t mind looking up again. Just don’t let him leave the planet without me.”

“Like I would.” Rose sighs and looks at the pot Jack has given her. She lifts the lid and grimaces. It smells like lilies. Oh, the Doctor is gonna be thrilled about that, but if it works, well, he’s just gonna have to deal.

Steeling herself to face the Doctor’s possible anger at her for ignoring his wish to be left alone she heads to his room and knocks on his door. “Doctor? It’s Rose.”

There was a scrambling noise from the other side of the door and then silence. “Doctor? Look, I know you’re in there. I can hear you. Will you please let me in? Jack found something that should help with the dye. He left it with me.”

“Just put it on the floor outside my door,” comes the grudging response. It almost hurts hearing his voice again after being away from him for three days.

“But I can help,” Rose protests.

“Rose, just go.”

“Doctor, please. I sent Jack away. It’s just me and I’m not gonna laugh at you. I’d never! You took care of me when I…after the thing on Drifilius. I trusted you to do that. Can’t you please trust me to help you now?” she asks gently. She hates the quavering note that comes into her voice, the begging quality of her words.

“Rose—.”

She sighs and clunks the pot down onto the floor. “I’m going now, Doctor. I just…I miss you,” she says softly her voice breaking on the last word. “I miss you so much and I…I…” She turns away and has taken a few steps down the corridor when his door creaks open.

“Come in, Rose,” he says just as softly.

She flies into his arms and hugs him tightly before getting a hold on herself and starting to take a step back, but though slow to start the Doctor’s arms have now tightened around her and he admits, “I missed you, too.”

When he finally releases her he retrieves the pot and shuts the door behind her then turns to face her. Rose is astonished at what she sees. His skin is covered in what has to be millions of little specks of glittering purple. Amazingly it doesn’t seem to distract from the beauty that is him, only enhances it, deepening the hollow of his cheeks, the sharp definition of his cheekbones, brow bones, and nose.

“Is it…is it like that all over?” she asks him.

“Yeah. It passed through denim and leather and wool and cotton.”

“Okay.” She nods and takes the pot from him. She takes a deep breath and looks him square in the eyes. “Then t-take off your clothes,” she says.
