Chapter Seven:  Telling Truths

The Doctor woke long before Rose did, though he was surprised when he checked his time sense that he had slept for six and a half hours. He knew he’d been pushing things lately but to be that tired…Well, perhaps he’d been able to sleep more deeply because Rose was back where she belonged, at his side and in his arms.

He blinked his eyes clear and realized that they’d separated somewhat in sleep and turned on their sides, facing each other. Rose’s arms were against his chest, her fingers splayed against the pectoral muscles. Her face was a mere six inches from his and all he would have to do to kiss her would be to tilt his head forward just a little bit.

He sighed and stopped himself from doing that. He’d wake her up and he knew she needed to sleep. Regeneration took a lot out of a person under ideal circumstances and having an engine blow up in your face was not an ideal circumstance. Then she’d used the power of the Vortex to seal the universe as it cracked. And in the past that had always led to her getting pregnant. He wondered about that.

He moved his hand from her waist where it had settled in the night and brought it forward and down to brush against her abdomen. He closed his eyes and searched for the telltale sign of newly conceived life. When he found it, he was awed. The spark was so incredibly tiny and yet it held so much untapped power. She was right about being pregnant. Not that he’d doubted her, but the proof of it was under his hand and the biological signature emanating from it definitely was half his genetic donation.

He returned his hand to her waist and his gaze to her face. She still looked so much like his Rose, and yet he liked the changes, too. His hand crept up to stroke her long black curls, feeling them slide between his fingers the same way her straight blond hair had once done. She was still so beautiful. He had missed her so much, every day that they’d been separated. He wondered if she’d missed him as desperately.

Maybe she’d missed him more. After all, he’d had her declaration of love to hold onto all these years. He knew without any doubt that she had loved him because she’d told him. Rose had never gotten that from him. He’d never told her, never given her his love to hold onto to carry her through all the years they’d been apart. He’d tried. It had taken him too long to work up his courage and then he finally had and their connection had been broken.

How it must have hurt her to not hear those words in return from him. He’d been so careless with that small amount of time, talking about so many things that meant nothing instead of the one thing that meant everything to him and would have meant everything to her.

He wondered if he should tell her how hard he’d tried to find a way back to her. Not a week had passed without him trying to concoct some way to get back to her. And yet he never had succeeded. It was a freak accident in the end that had brought him through.

He sighed. He didn’t even want to go back. He’d willingly stay in this universe to be with Rose and his children. He knew that he had a responsibility to Luke and to Sarah Jane to take them both back to their Earth. It was the only thing that would tear him from Rose again, even for a little while.

What he was afraid of though was that he’d find a way to take Luke home, to return Sarah to Earth, and then when he tried to go back for Rose, the way would be closed again. To have the chance to be with Rose and then to lose it would be one more blow to his already wounded hearts. If it came down to a choice, he’d choose Rose. He’d actually leave Sarah on Toroptikan and finish raising Luke himself, if he thought Rose would let him get away with it.

But he knew his Rose and she would insist he fulfill his obligations. So the only way to be sure he didn’t lose her again was to get her to come with him and to bring Jamie along, as well. Whether or not his older children would come would be up to them, but he knew Rose wouldn’t leave Jamie behind. The question was would she risk never seeing Landon and Mairi again? Yes, they were grown and had lives of their own, but they were still her children.

And did he want to miss out on getting to know his older children just because of a promise he made to look out for Luke? Well, he had a long time to go before any decisions were made. The TARDIS needed to be repaired and he didn’t know if he could find what he needed on the moon. He was pretty sure he could get what he needed on Earth if there was nothing on the moon to fix it, but then it would be waiting on shipping from Earth so that would add a lot of wait time before he even got the parts.

He could stay for quite some time. And really, Sarah would never know how long he stayed here unless Luke was fully grown when he returned the boy to his mum. What was happening to his ethics? That wasn’t even something he should be considering.

He pulled Rose in closer to his body and she snuggled into him with a soft sound of contentment. He’d never be able to leave her behind, he suddenly realized. Not ever again. She would simply have to say yes and come with him. That’s all there was to it. He was never going to leave her.

Rose woke with the unfamiliar pressure of a body pressed against hers. It took her a moment to remember, to realize she hadn’t been dreaming, that the Doctor had indeed returned to her, and was in fact holding her in his arms. She opened her eyes to see his warm chocolate ones staring at her face.

“Hello,” he said.

“Hello,” she said back with a soft smile. He leaned forward the last few inches between their mouths and he kissed her, gently at first, overcoming her first moment of surprise, and then much more passionately. Rose managed to take it in stride, letting her mouth fall open under his and finding herself enjoying his sweet explorations of her tongue.

How long they kissed for she didn’t know. She never wanted it to end, but end it did, the two of them jumping apart when her bedroom door came flying open and Jamie stood there saying, “Mom, I need--.” She broke off quite quickly as she took in the scene of Rose and the Doctor kissing in bed. She fled the room, the door slamming shut behind her.

“Welcome to the wonderful world of parenting,” Rose said with a sigh. She pulled away from his arms. “That was a beautiful way to start the morning,” she said as she sat up and slid from the bed. The Doctor watched her with dark eyes as she collected her bathrobe and after a quick stop in the washroom, Rose made her way out to the kitchen to talk to Jamie.

The Doctor dressed quickly once Rose had left and a few minutes later he went out in search of her and his daughter.

“He was in your bed, Mum!” Jamie said sounding completely scandalized.

“I know where he was,” Rose said calmly. “I invited him in.”

“But…you haven’t seen him in thirty years. You don’t even know him anymore, how could you just…you’re always after me to be a good girl, not to just jump into relationships and certainly not to put out--.”

“Jamie!” said Rose sharply. “It wasn’t like that for one thing. I’m an adult for another thing. And he’s not just any man. He’s your father.”

“I still don’t think you’re setting a good example.”

“That’s enough, Jamie,” said Rose passionately. “This isn’t some school girl crush that’s easily changed from day to day and I’m not a fourteen-year-old. This is the Doctor. He’s the love of my life. And if I have anything to say about it, he and I will be together like we should have been if we’d never gotten separated. You don’t know what’s it’s been like being apart from him all this time. I love him. I love him so much, you can’t even dream of how much. There aren’t even words to describe how much I love him.”

“Rose,” came the soft voice of the Doctor behind her. She spun around scared that he had heard everything. But when she saw the look on his face all of her fears and uncertainties vanished like smoke. “My Rose. I love you, too.”
