Back in the olden days in America, the Sears Roebuck catalogue was commonly used as toilet paper in the outhouse. Was there a comparable thing used in the U.K. for the same purpose?
I'd say the Argos catalogue is/ was analogous to the Sears catalogue, but I don't know if it was was such the institution that the Sears "dream book" was back in the day.
toilet paper in the UK *WAS* the S&R catalogue paper until sometime in the 80s or 90s. Seriously... the paper in our school when I was there in the early 70s felt like it was waxed. it's one of the oldest jokes going, but it was pretty true (in every jest lies an ounce of truth, and all that)
The Argos catalogue would be the book that everyone knows. But depending on the context, a lot of people would say that's what Tabloid Newspapers are for. (Daily Mail/The Sun)
