Drop Dead Diva Season 4

Drop Dead Diva has been in turns a funny, charming, heartbreaking show and the first three seasons have been incredibly awesome. The concept seems so vapid, the idea of a model dying and a lawyer dying at the same time and the model accidentally coming back in the lawyer's body, but the execution of it has been so wonderful. It could have been very insulting in so many ways, since Jane is overweight and Deb wasn't exactly brilliant, but they have handled it very well. Jane is never treated as anything other than amazing. Each character has been so fully developed and Brooke Elliott simply shines as Jane/Deb. And the shows occassional musical numbers starring this Broadway girl may be somewhat odd (tend to be dream sequences), but are so very well done that they just add to this quirky, off-beat show. So, yes, big, big fan here.
That's why it is so sad to say that I am pretty disappointed in the first two episodes of this season. Not only do we lose guardian angel Fred again and his charmingly sweet romance with Jane's best friend and roomate Stacy, but Jane's new guardian angel Luke is a complete and utter jerk. And Kim Kardashian as Nikki? Umm...she's not an actress. At all. I mean, you can see her thinking her lines. It's bad. And it detracts from the show. I mean, she's pretty and all, but everyone on this show is pretty. It's not enough when everyone else's caliber of acting is just so much higher. It just smacks of stunt casting...which, okay, they do do that, but usually only in a couple episodes a year, and this is looking like a more permanent character.
*sighs* I guess the reason behind replacing Fred (again) with Luke is that Luke will stir things up and make Jane's life more difficult. And keep Jane and Grayson from getting together. But you know what? Jane's life is already difficult enough. And maybe she can't ever tell Grayson that she is really Deb in Jane's body, but that doesn't mean Jane and Grayson couldn't fall in love as the two people they are now. Although I really do like Owen and if Grayson has really fallen in love with Jane as Jane, then maybe it wouldn't hurt him to see Jane with a guy that makes her beam. She certainly had to sit through all of his tarts, plus his engagement and almost wedding to someone else. I don't know. I think I would be okay with Fred keeping them apart, but Luke's tactics just make me want to smack him, or turn off the volume whenever he's on.
Of course Fred has come and gone before, so I'm hoping this is just a bad plot device and we will see him again, even if it's only in Stacy's dreams. I hope she remembers him. And I hope Luke makes such a big mess of things that they take him off angel duty and send Fred back.
In a lot of ways this show reminds me of Ally McBeal in it's heyday, but without the storylines that would just grate on my nerves. Actually, I think it's better than Ally was, come to think of it, by a lot. And I loved Ally McBeal.
