Closet=wardrobe when you are talking about the place in the bedroom to hang up your clothes and closet=cupboard when you are keeping your supplies or brooms there, but what about a smaller compartment in the hallway meant for hanging up coats and keeping your winter boots in? Is that also referred to as a wardrobe or cupboard? Because it feels weird to type he retrieved his jacket from the hall cupboard, or he retrieved his coat from the hall wardrobe. About ready just to use a coat rack or hooks by the front door or something.

Nothing to add other than I LOVE your icon.

The icon is the fault of [livejournal.com profile] shengirl who made a comment that the Doctor was British, well, Space British anyway, and then [livejournal.com profile] carly21 decided she had to make it into an icon. It is perfect for my Britspeak questions. Shen is also responsible for my Rose Tyler: Time Lord Aphrodesiac (a flippant comment to her that I made and she had to iconize) and The Oncoming Pout (which I seem to have misplaced) icons.

Would this happen to be the icon you've misplaced?

Okay, thank you. It still sounds wrong, so I think he's getting a coat rack.

Hall cupboard would be correct. Another option - a la Harry Potter - is for it to be a cupboard under the stairs, in which case you would just say 'He got his coat from under the stairs'.

I also vote for hall-cupboard, although if you picture it as hooks over a cubby to hold the boots... then it's coatrack or even hatrack. Or, perhaps better, a hallstand. My parents had one of these beauties, it was lovely, hooks for coats, mirror for last minute checks and a section for umbrellas. There is usually a box-type compartment at the bottom, not sure what it ought to be used for (ours had wrapping paper, it was just the right size for rolls). Maybe boots if there was a tray inside.
