Chapter Six: Settling In

Not wanting to ruin her clothes Rose stripped down to her bra and knickers. She wasn’t as brave as the Doctor about walking around some parts of the island naked, but who knew how long that top and ripped cargo pants were going to last if she didn’t take care of them. She didn’t really fancy wearing a little grass skirt and a coconut bra any time soon, though the Doctor in a loin cloth had serious possibilities. Where she’d get a loin cloth on the other hand…

She gathered as much clay as she could carry onto a slab of wood and cradling it against her body took it back to the beach. She made several trips until her arms ached and she had a decent mound in sight of the fire, enough to keep her busy the rest of the morning. She worked under the shade of some palms. She didn’t want to risk sunburn or heatstroke by staying directly in the sun’s glare or the hardening of the unused clay from the heat of the fire.

She worked hard, first shredding the majority of the pile of coconut husks into sections while keeping an occasional eye on the lunch fish, and then by building several bricks on top of a flat stone and then pressing down on them with an old board she had found that looked like it had originally been part of a crate, trying to make the tops and bottoms as flat as possible. She had no way of smoothing the sides, but she figured they could always fill in any gaps in the kiln with wet clay once it had dried.

Her first few bricks were ridiculously lopsided, but she got better at it as she went along. When the Doctor came back she’d see about putting them directly into the fire so they’d harden faster. For the time being, she left them near the fire and in full sun to harden. She had no idea how long it would take, hours or days, but it sounded like the Doctor was afraid they’d be there for some time, so even if they took a few days to dry they’d still be worth it.

She found herself growing thirsty about mid-morning and rather than take the time to return to the stream to drink water she found the spike and the rock the Doctor had used to drill into the coconuts and managed after several attempts to drill a hole in another one. She drank some of the coconut water out of it then set it aside to eat with lunch later on.

When the Doctor returned the sun was high in the sky and the fish was done cooking. He eyed the pile of bricks appreciatively, and then eyed her body even more appreciatively despite the fact that her arms, thighs and stomach were covered in a thin layer of light brown clay. “Go wash up,” he said. “I’ll take the fish off the fire.”

She walked down to the ocean and using sand scrubbed the clay from her skin as best she could. She stripped down and rinsed out her bra and knickers, feeling the heat of the Doctor’s gaze on her as she did so. She hoped they could find something decent to use for soap soon, especially if she was going to be making anymore bricks. She’d used coconut oil soap before so maybe it would be possible to make some. She’d ask the Doctor about it later when there were less pressing needs to attend to. She left her undergarments to dry and reached for her top and trousers.

“Don’t get dressed on my account,” the Doctor told her. “The view’s rather nice without those pesky garments in the way.”

Rose laughed and ignored him, pulling on her clothes. He gave her a look that was almost mutinous. “I’ll sleep naked in your arms all night if you like,” she promised.

“Just sleep?” he murmured.

“I certainly hope not,” she told him, her eyes trailing down his body speculatively. “Not feeling quite so sore anymore. Wouldn’t mind another good, solid shag. Or two.”

He grinned. “Your wish is my command.” They flirted and bantered for a while as they ate the delicious fish and onions for lunch.

“What are we going to do about dinner?” Rose asked as they finished up the meal.

“Figured we’d get some more crabs or other shellfish and we could put them in the pit again. Then we’re both free to work on the shelter. I’d like it up by dinner time, though that might be impossible. We can gather them and get the food and get it going before we head back into the jungle.”

“Can we put the bricks in the fire to make them harden faster?” Rose asked him.

The Doctor thought for a moment. “No, I don’t want to leave the fire unmanned for that long and risk burning down the island. There’s another one on the south side of this island that we could swim to, but it doesn’t seem to have many trees, so it may not have the kind of food available to us that we have here. It’ll take a day or two longer for them to sun dry, but so be it.”

“What if it rains? Will it hurt the bricks?”

“We can cover them before the storm comes in,” he said. “We’ve got…” He stopped, smelling the air. “Six, maybe seven hours.”

“What will we cover them with?” Rose asked. “I used most of the husks to make them.”

“Palm fronds weighted down with stones,” he said.

“Okay. Let’s get moving on dinner then. Oh, but first…can you use the sonic on my teeth? I don’t have any way of brushing and without your transdimensional pockets, no toothpaste. With all the kissing I plan on doing later on…” She trailed off.

“Yeah,” he said. He flipped through the settings and then Rose opened her mouth and let him vibrate off the contaminants. He did the same for his own teeth. Rose tried not to laugh, but it tickled. That done they turned back to food gathering.

Rose’s knickers and bra had dried out in the hot sun so she put them on, but left her clothes behind, while the Doctor stripped down to his boxer briefs. They both wanted something dry to change into in case the ocean soaked them again and they’d need the outer clothes for protection while building the shelter.

She grabbed the stone knife she’d been using to cut things up earlier and followed the Doctor down to the rocks. While Rose pried the equivalent of mussels from the rocks the Doctor dug up something quite like clams, placing them on top of his jumper to keep them from burying themselves in the sand again. She searched through the tidal pools and came up with other scuttling creatures that the Doctor declared edible. Once he’d used the sonic to end their lives they put the sea creatures into the pit with more wet seaweed and palm fronds and heated stones.

The Doctor hung his underwear over a bush to dry out in the sun next to his jumper and pulled his jeans and boots back on, while Rose dressed in her top and torn trousers to protect her skin as much as possible from the tough jungle foliage. He led her back towards the stream to a small clearing where he’d found trees close enough together that formed a rough square. Rose helped him tie long vines into place seven feet off the ground. First he’d shin up a tree and make little notches with the sonic screwdriver, then she’d hand a long vine up to him. He’d tie it securely into place and she’d take the other end to the next tree while he climbed down then back up again.

First they made a square. Its vines were tied just at the edge of the Doctor’s reach, but at least this way the roof would be tall enough for him to stand under and still have a bit of clearance. From the edges of the square the Doctor began tying vines in diagonals until a crisscrossing of vines more intricate than a cat’s cradle made a roof. None of the resulting diamond openings were more than 8 inches from point to point.

On three sides and most of the fourth he brought vines from the roof to the jungle floor, where he held them in place with heavy rocks. “I’ll have to whittle stakes if we’re here too long,” he said, “but for now the rocks will do.” Tying more vines horizontally across the vertical ones, he made little squares. He sent Rose to gather palm fronds from a big pile he’d made earlier in the day. “Now we just pile palm fronds on top and sort of weave them into place,” he said, “and we’ll have a relatively leak proof covering.”

After that they did the walls and Rose turned to the remainder of the pile. “Still a lot there. You cut too many.”

“Nah,” said the Doctor. “We can use them to sleep on. Give us a bit of a springy mattress. Making love to you on the beach was wonderful, but I’ve still got sand in places sand has no right to be. This’ll be better.” They brought them inside the shelter and laid them out in a rough rectangular shape.

Five hours had passed in the building of the little shelter. They took two water breaks at the nearby stream. “Food’s probably done,” the Doctor said as they put the finishing touches on the ten foot by ten foot room. He sniffed the air. “Rain’s about two hours off. We best get back to the beach and eat, then get those bricks covered.”

The meal was delicious, though Rose knew she would tire of seafood after a week or so. Hopefully they wouldn’t be here that long. Still, she wasn’t about to change her mind about hunting bunnies or the like if they were. There had been plenty of birds singing in the trees while she and the Doctor had built the shelter. Maybe they’d be able to find some eggs. Come to think of it, she’d seen turtles. She’d have to ask the Doctor what a turtle nest looked like.

They split more coconuts open and once they were eaten and cleaned out the Doctor said, “We should take a couple of those shells back to the shelter with us. We can get some water from the stream to keep with us overnight. Not quite a water glass on the bedside table, but it’ll do. You have been staying hydrated when we aren’t together, haven’t you, Rose?”

“Trying to,” she said.

They threw the shells into the sea and covered the bricks, weighting the fronds against the wind. The sky was turning grey in the distance. “Still an hour or so off,” the Doctor commented as she turned worried eyes in the direction of rumbling thunder.

“I was wondering about eggs,” Rose said as they headed back towards the stream to get water. “Do you think there’re nests about?”

“Likely,” said the Doctor. “There are birds and turtles and snakes and lizards.”

“Snakes?” Rose gulped.

“Didn’t see anything that looked poisonous or any constrictor types.”

“Yeah, but…snakes.”

“Just little ones, like you’d find in the garden.”

“You sure?”

“I won’t let anything happen to you, Rose. Though what happened to my brave girl? You faced down that eight foot tall snake monster on Pythonicus no problem,” he said.

“No problem but six weeks of nightmares,” Rose muttered.

“You should have said,” he told her.

“What could you have done? They’re just bad dreams. I feel silly even bringing it up.”

“But we could have talked it out,” he said.

“Nightmares are over now. I just get…shivers when I think about them, is all.”

They knelt at the stream and filled their shells with water then took them to the shelter. “I need a latrine run,” Rose said.

The Doctor glanced up through the trees to the sky. “Don’t take too long,” he said.

Rose rolled her eyes. “It takes however long it takes,” she said. “Inferior human biology, remember?”

“Not so inferior,” he said softly, his eyes worried. “The storm will break soon. I just don’t want you caught out in it,” he said. “I’d offer to come with you, but…”

“Yeah, no thanks,” Rose said. “A girl needs some privacy. You promise the snakes are little?”

“Yeah, no sign of anything large, except...” He glanced down at the front of his jeans.

“Don’t you dare say it,” she laughed. “I’ll be back before you’ve even had time to miss me.”

“I’ll always miss you,” he said.

She grinned, kissed him, and hurried off. The sky opened on her way back, and she was drenched when she met the Doctor halfway. He took her hand and pulled her quickly along to their shelter. “Now, let’s see about getting these wet clothes off,” he said with a smile.

“Oh, yes, let’s,” she agreed enthusiastically and once they were naked allowed him to lower her gently down onto the bed of palm fronds.

“Ready for that good, solid shag?” he asked in a husky voice.

Thank you. Yes, I suppose it probably is. More so in retrospect since the next chapter took so long to write, but will be posted shortly.
