LJ Help?

I recently joined a comm and added it to my friend's list like normal, but the members have a tendency to forget to put things behind a cut at least twice a week.  Since it can have some rather risque manips posted to it, I was wondering if there was a way to remain a member of the comm without having it appear on my friend's list?  I want to retain posting access and the ability to read anything locked.  I know it can be set up like this to start with, but I didn't do that.  I guess I could unjoin then rejoin, but I was hoping it might be easier than that.  I'm just a little tired of scrolling down my list and being surprised by NSFW items in all their living glory right when my kids happen to walk into the room.

Is there anyone who can talk me through it in little baby steps?  (This does not mean sending me to the FAQ's, those are often far more complicated than I can deal with).

Edited to add:  Thank you.  You guys are awesome at all things LJ!

The easiest way I know of is to go to the comm's profile and hover over the user pic. In the menu that comes up "stop watching" should be an option. That will keep it from showing up on your flist but you'll still be a member and retain all your member's privileges, etc. ;)

Hope that helps! :D ♥!

ooh, does that work? I didn't know that, I've only ever used the filter feature I've mentioned below, thanks Ais

Sure thing, hon! I have a few comms that sometimes go crazy and have a flood of entries come through that make it difficult to wade through but I didn't want to leave them. And I was pretty sure there had to be an option to be a member of but not watch since they offer that when you join the comm, so I poked around until I found that. (And after reading the FAQ and Googling and the whole nine yards, I realized that the "stop watching" option pops right up whenever you hover over the comm symbol or its default icon, d'oh! *facepalm* ;) )

I also have used filters before but half the time I forget and do "all friends" before I think about it 'cause I'm a goof like that, lol! ;)

Anyway, glad if I can help! :D ♥!

I don't think there's any way to completely hide a comm or person from your friends page permanently, if there is I haven't figured it out yet, but you can "filter" what appears there. First you go to this page

http://www.livejournal.com/friends/editgroups.bml

create a custom friend group, and put any comms or individuals whose stuff you don't want to see in that group. Then remove those same comms/users from the Default View group.

Then when you visit your friends page, unless you select the other group from the drop down box at the top of the page marked filter, only posts from those places in the Default Group will appear

hope that helps :)

apologies, just noticed an error.

Yep, I'm a big fan of the Default View group. You can still go to the comm and see the entries, but they don't show up in your f-list (good also for comms that have ridiculously high numbers of posts).

You could do what [livejournal.com profile] ageless_aislynn suggested, or you could put them into a filter. I have a couple of people whose posts I don't want to read regularly (but didn't unfriend for a variety of reasons), so I put them in a filter called 'not reading right now' and they don't show up in my default f-list feed.
