Title:  Four Times Rose Tyler Avoided Paperwork and the OneTime She Didn't Want To (1/1)
Author:  [livejournal.com profile] amberfocus
Characters/Pairings:  Ten2/Rose
Genre:  Fluff, Humor, Romance
Rating:  Teen
Beta:  [livejournal.com profile] thetesh
Summary:  By the time someone finds them by tracking the GPS signal in Rose’s phone, they’ve built two forts out of the file boxes and made a surprisingly comfortable sofa.
A/N:  Written for Challenge 55 over at [livejournal.com profile] then_theres_us.  Five times fics are hard.  Good thing they pushed back the deadline by a day or I'd never have managed it.  For [livejournal.com profile] catyuy who sparked the idea.  Picture prompt beneath the cut.

“You’ve passed the physical and have been completely cleared to start making jumps with the dimension cannon,” says Dr. Elliot. “So if you’ll just sign this stack of forms in triplicate where I’ve indicated, you can get started searching for this Doctor of yours.”

Rose eyes the thick stack of papers then picks up the device. She worked hard on its creation and she knows exactly how to operate it. “Tell you what,” says Rose as she hangs it around her neck. “I’ll do it when I get back.”

“But you’re not coming back!” protests the man.

Rose smiles an almost preternatural smile, Bad Wolf lingering on her teeth. “Exactly.” I’m coming back to you, Doctor, she thinks, more than ready to save the multi-verse now. She presses the buttons in sequence and disappears from Torchwood Medical.

“This is getting ridiculous,” Rose Tyler says as Ianto Jones dumps a ream of paperwork on her desk. Technically it is more than a ream. It is a literal mountain. Okay, a figurative mountain, but still.

“This is what you get for saving the universe and then coming back,” Ianto says with a smirk.

“Yeah, catch me doing that again,” she replies.

“What, saving the universe?”

“No, coming back.”

“Rose, there’s a temporal anomaly in Piccadilly Circus!” exclaims the Doctor as he suddenly bursts through the door with a bizarre, electronic clipboard held out before him. A map of the area in question lights the screen and a big red circle flashes repeatedly over and over again.

Rose jumps to her feet. “Sorry, Ianto, duty calls!” she says hurrying over to the Doctor and quickly rushing him out the door and down the hall to the lift. Once inside she turns to him and says, “How bad is it?”

“How bad is what?” he asks blankly.

“The temporal anomaly?”

“Oh, that,” he says waving it away. “Five minutes tops to take care of it and then I thought we could knock off early and—.” He doesn’t have time to finish. Rose knocks him against the lift wall with her enthusiastic thank you kiss.

Rose has been given stern instructions by her father to get the last month’s worth of paperwork under control and is finally picking up a pen to do it when two little blond bundles of energy burst through her office door. Five-year-old Tony Tyler and his brand new puppy, a gorgeous golden spaniel, race around the room while the Doctor lounges in the entryway.

“What’s this?” Rose asks.

“Jackie had an emergency,” the Doctor claims, the corners of his mouth rising in a slight smirk.

“And she called you?”

“More like showed up and dumped them into my care. She fired the new nanny,” the Doctor said.

“What, again?”

“Well, the woman hated dogs. And children. Don’t think much of your mum’s interviewing skills.”

Tony picks up the puppy and deposits her on Rose’s desk. Little Sasha turns around in circles three times before settling into place, her head resting on Rose’s inbox.

“Can we go to the park, Rosie?” asks Tony. “Sasha needs a walk.”

“I promised I’d take him, but he wants you along, too,” the Doctor adds.

Rose glances at the paperwork and then back at her brother. “Pleeeeeeeaaaaaaase, Rose,” he begs.

Her eyes flick over to the Doctor. “Please, Rose?” He manages to sound a little bit desperate and has bigger puppy dog eyes than Sasha.

“All right, just let me get my coat.” She walks over to her coat rack and pulls on her raincoat and boots. With a glance out the window she adds her umbrella.

“No, Sasha, stop it!” Tony cries out and when Rose turns around she sees the puppy with a mouthful of documents, chewing away like a creature possessed. In the few seconds it takes to walk back to the desk the puppy quickly regurgitates onto the remainder of the stack.

Rose can’t help but giggle as she calls maintenance. The next morning when her father demands the completed paperwork she feels perfectly justified in telling him, “Your dog ate my paperwork.”

The Doctor and Rose are hiding out in the records room of all places when the alien space ship breaches the atmosphere. One moment they’re making out rather desperately, the papers Rose had come to retrieve completely forgotten, like they don’t live together in the same flat and share a bed, and the next a boom so loud it shakes the entire building like an earthquake shatters the air. Papers fly everywhere, including the ones Rose had originally come down there for.

Shelves fall over blocking the escape route to the exit. By the time someone finds them by tracking the GPS signal in Rose’s phone, they’ve built two forts out of the file boxes and made a surprisingly comfortable sofa. The hundreds of little balled up pieces of paper (launched by rubber bands from said forts) are a bit harder to explain, but not as hard as the position they are found in on the sofa.

Her father threatens even more paperwork, but they go off instead to save the world from invasion and Pete decides to hire Rose a secretary to do it for her.

Five months later Rose is faced with a single, simple document and for once she doesn’t mind filling it out. She beams at the Doctor, always so handsome in his tuxedo, and picks up the fancy pen with the big TARDIS blue plume on the end. With a flourish she signs her name next to his on the marriage license, then passes it over to their witnesses and waits patiently for the minister to sign.

Finally when it’s completely legal she stands up, careful of her long, taffeta dress and the Doctor pulls her into his arms. “Hello, Mrs. Doctor,” he says with the happiest grin she’s ever seen on him.

“Hello, Mr. Doctor,” she replies back with a smile that covers her entire face.

He kisses her until the minister coughs uncomfortably and Jackie, who is lingering in the background makes comments about starting the receiving line. “Just give us a moment,” Rose says and everyone else files out of the minister’s office.

“What do you think?” Rose asks when they are alone. “Want to make a run for it?”

The Doctor laughs and smiles and reveals a small suitcase from its hiding place behind the minister’s filing cabinet. “Street clothes,” he says.

Locking the door they quickly change into less formal clothes. The Doctor boosts her out the window then pauses and folds up their copy of the marriage license, putting it into an inside pocket of his suit. Quickly he shins down the drainpipe and joins her on the ground. He holds out one hand and she takes it.

“Rose? Rose? Doctor?” They can hear Jackie’s voice from the open window above.

“Run?” he asks gleefully.

“Run,” she agrees and together they take off, running from the immediate danger that is Jackie Tyler.

Of course a marriage license for her and the Doctor is the one form of paperwork Rose wouldn't mind signing, lol! (Granted, what girl *would* mind signing that kind of paperwork if it meant getting to keep the Doctor?)

I love that you technically started this from *before* she got the Doctor back. Ugh. Paperwork to try to save the world must be a nightmare. I applaud Rose putting it off. :) The Doctor has trained her well.

Beautiful fic. Congratulations on making me giggle through the majority of it!

(and yes, five times fics ARE hard.) But, they're amazing when pulled off right, and you did that perfectly here.

Nope, she's more than happy to sign that. Yeah, it felt right to go back a bit to do it. I mean, who wouldn't want to "magically" disappear when confronted with forms that needed to be signed in triplicate? thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

You are flat out brilliant, and I'm dying to go digging for your other work. I can't put my finger on it, but there's a spark of life there, in your depictions of these characters, that is just beyond the ordinary. I'm floored. This...

“Oh, that,” he says waving it away. “Five minutes tops to take care of it and then I thought we could knock off early and—.” He doesn’t have time to finish. Rose knocks him against the lift wall with her enthusiastic thank you kiss.

...actually gave me a chill. And this...

The Doctor and Rose are hiding out in the records room of all places when the alien space ship breaches the atmosphere. One moment they’re making out rather desperately, the papers Rose had come to retrieve completely forgotten, like they don’t live together in the same flat and share a bed, and the next a boom so loud it shakes the entire building like an earthquake shatters the air.

...had me grinning dreamily.

I tend to head for the angst with these two, oddly, since angst isn't usually my scene, but you've got me rethinking the entire approach, because there's something so joyful here! It makes sense. There's no "someday he'll leave me" hanging over their heads, just fun and laughter and mutual adoration.

I'm gushing. Great job. I just love this.

Wow, thank you, that's a really lovely, glowing review. *blushes* Makes me happy that you enjoyed it so much. No need to dig, my Masterfic List is here: http://amberfocus.livejournal.com/261401.html, though I haven't updated it in a couple of months (need to get on that). It's divided according to which Doctor it's about.

This was lovely! All the various excuses were hilarious. I loved "You dog ate my paperwork" but without a doubt I most enjoyed the getting trapped and building opposing forts out of paperwork.

As someone who has had to file her own ridiculous amount of paperwork I can empathize with Rose completely.

Date: 2010-11-08 04:57 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amberfocus.livejournal.com
Wouldn't that be fun? I would so want to build forts if I got trapped in the records room. Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.

Ha! You managed to write for the challenge after all. Well done, you.

Rose smiles an almost preternatural smile, Bad Wolf lingering on her teeth.

This line. ♥ Also, 'Mrs Doctor'. *snorfles*

This was both sweet and hilarious. Much love.

I needed some light fluff in my day today, and this was perfect.
Also just... absolutely cute with the paperwork and the "Run" reference on top of it. Just perfect.

If I made hot cocoa right now, I wouldn't even need marshmallows or whipped cream. This is just that perfectly fluffy.

This is enchanting. Thank goodness Pete finally gets wise and hires Rose a secretary. She has a whole lot of running to do, no time for paperwork.

I love the ending.

“Run?” he asks gleefully.

“Run,” she agrees and together they take off, running from the immediate danger that is Jackie Tyler.

Jackie is going to be livid!

I'm all smiley now. Thank you.

Yeah, I think Pete gave up that battle out of self-defense. Thanks. I thought they'd run away from their own wedding reception. Just too boring and I think they'd want to celebrate their marriage alone.

This fic is squee all the way. Just...adorable and lovely and fluffy in the best way!

Favorite bits:

"Bad Wolf lingering on her teeth" Just a fantastic piece of phrasing and imagery.
"...bizarre, electronic clipboard..." I can just see Cloen wandering around with his blinky clipboard *so clearly*.

"By the time someone finds them by tracking the GPS signal in Rose’s phone, they’ve built two forts out of the file boxes and made a surprisingly comfortable sofa. The hundreds of little balled up pieces of paper (launched by rubber bands from said forts) are a bit harder to explain, but not as hard as the position they are found in on the sofa." Absolutely everything about this paragraph is made of win. :D
