Summary: An unexpected pregnancy causes huge emotional upset in the lives of the Doctor and Rose. With Jack the only voice of reason, will this child lead them to happily ever after or tear them apart forever?
A/N: I know, I know, it's been forever. Since Leap of Faith is being difficult at the moment I turned to this fic once again. I do hope to have a chapter of LoF ready by the end of the week, though. It is coming along grudgingly. Oh, and don't read this chapter at work or school. There's smut.

Chapter Forty-Two: Some Things are Verboten
“You got off easy,” Rose smirked as the Doctor held a frozen bag of peas to his head while Rose searched the TARDIS’ freezer for a real ice pack.
“You got off easy,” he said petulantly. “I got a Tyler smack to the back of the head.”
“Well, what did you think would happen, molesting me like that on my mother’s couch with her still in the kitchen?” she asked trying hard not to giggle at the wounded look on his face. “She had to bring the tea out some time.”
“Molesting you? I think, Rose Tyler, that you were the one with the frisky foot,” he said.
“Was I, now?” she asked him with a flirtatious grin.
“You know very well that you were,” he told her. He tried to say it sternly, but when Rose’s tongue flicked out the corner of her mouth he couldn’t help but grin back at her.
“Can’t help it. You’re so damn sexy with that beard.”
“I had this beard before we left for our bonding. It never made you jump me in your mother’s flat,” he said.
“Ah, well, pregnancy hormones are interesting things,” Rose said with a shrug. Her voice dropped low and turned husky. “Very…interesting…things. You think there’s any possibility of finishing what we started?”
“You’re a randy little thing, aren’t you?” he asked as she emerged from the freezer and handed him the ice bag she’d found.
“You’re just figuring that out now?” She took the peas from him and tossed them into the recycler. “We owe Mum a bag of peas,” she said.
“It’s her fault I needed them.” At Rose’s look he admitted, “Okay, it’s our fault. And yes, I rather think there’s a good chance we can finish what we started.”
“What about your head?” she asked.
“Oh, it’s ready.”
“I meant the other one!” she said pretending to be scandalized.
“Time Lord, me. I heal quickly.”
“Really? Because I was gonna offer to kiss it and make it better.”
“I’ve got plenty of other things that you can kiss, Rose Tyler. And each and every one of them will be made better with that kiss.” The Doctor put the icepack down on the counter and advanced on Rose, who squealed and backed into the table at his sudden predatory expression. “Shall we just get some of these clothes out of the way?” He stripped off his shirt and then picked her up and set her down on the tabletop, gathering the skirt of her dress in his hands. He stepped between her legs, knelt down, and pulled off her knickers.
“I thought I was the one that was supposed to be kissing you,” she said.
“Never fear. You’ll get your turn,” he said with so much promise in his voice that Rose made a tiny little involuntary noise. It made a grin split his face. He’d just spread her thighs and had buried his face between them, his tongue finding its way to where she most wanted it to be, when they heard a loud cough from behind them.
“I eat off that table,” said Jack. “And apparently you do, too.” The innuendo hung heavily in the air. “Though I can’t say as I’ve had anything quite that luscious for dessert off that particular table myself.”
Rose gasped and shoved the Doctor away from her. “Oi!” he complained in protest as he fell backwards onto his arse and she quickly fixed her dress and tried desperately to keep herself from blushing at being caught in the act. Months of being alone in the ship had made them indiscriminate in the places they would make love and they’d completely forgotten that Jack could appear at any time. She was just grateful the man hadn’t showed up five minutes later or things could have been really embarrassing.
“Ever hear of knocking?” Rose asked.
“On the lack of a kitchen door?” he replied exasperated. “That would work well.”
“Hello, Jack,” the Doctor said calmly picking up his jumper and wiping off his mouth before slipping it over his head. He casually pocketed Rose’s knickers.
“Doctor. Rose. Not to break the tension of the moment, which is admittedly delicious, for me anyway, but…do a guy a favor and the next time you decide to take off without me, at least tell me?” Jackie had said that Jack was all right with them running off, but the irritation in his tone suggested he was at least a little annoyed with them both. Or hurt. Normally catching them in the act would have delighted him to no end and while he still seemed somewhat gleeful, there was still reproach in his eyes as he looked at them.
“I’m sorry, Jack,” Rose said. She slid heavily off the table and went over and hugged her friend. Jack held onto her tightly.
“Rose and I needed some time,” the Doctor said. “I won’t apologize for that.”
“Looks like you needed a lot of time,” Jack said as he finally released her. He studied her for a long moment. “Look at those roots. You’re practically a brunette except on the ends. And it’s gotten so long. How long were you gone?”
“Don’t know exactly. Months,” she said with a shrug.
“Seven months,” the Doctor said, “give or take a week.”
“Anyway, the Doctor says it’s bad to dye my hair while I’m pregnant.” She picked up some of the ends and looked at them critically. “Could do with a bit of a trim before the wedding. Don’t exactly want to be two toned.”
“We could get you some of that stuff from Rigel Five. It’s safe for pregnant women.” He gave her another hug and got kicked by the baby. “Your hair’s not the only thing that’s changed.” His hands slid onto the sides of her belly. “Settle down in there, Charlie.” The Doctor fought down an irrational surge of jealousy at Jack’s familiarity with Rose. “How much longer you got, Rosie?”
“About two months. Bit less if I’m lucky.” Charlie kicked again under the pressure of Jack’s hands on Rose’s belly and Jack laughed. “Charlie says hello,” she told him. “I think he missed you.”
“Well, I’m glad someone did.”
Rose stood up on tiptoe and kissed Jack’s cheek and again the Doctor fought down the urge to separate his wife from his friend. “I missed you, too, Jack, but the Doctor is right. We needed that time. There were some things that we finally got sorted out.” Her eyes skittered to the Doctor’s. He smiled reassuringly. For once the Doctor wasn’t too upset that Jack might know more about their emotional life than he was comfortable with.
“Yeah?” Jack said realizing what she was getting at.
“Yeah. I’m not afraid anymore. Of being…of being left behind. Not even a little.” The Doctor’s arms came around her from behind.
“I’m not letting go of her, Jack. Not ever again,” he admitted.
Jack smiled. “About time you got your head on straight, Doc. And if seven months alone with Rose was what you needed to do it, then I guess I can forgive you for abandoning me.”
“It’s not abandoning if we come back for you,” the Doctor said. “Do you really think I’d leave you somewhere permanent without at least saying good-bye, Jack?”
“I don’t know, Doc. Sometimes I think it’d be easier for you if I wasn’t around. It’d be easy enough for you to not look back, life you’ve led.”
“Don’t be daft. Do you think I’d let him?” Rose asked. “You’re part of our family. The Doctor, me, Charlie, and Uncle Jack. We need you, Jack.”
“We do,” the Doctor admitted. “It’s going to be a full-time job, looking after this family once the baby comes. I’ve got a lot of enemies out there who’d be more than a little too happy to get their hands on my wife and son. I need someone I can trust by my side and there isn’t anyone I trust more to keep them safe than you.”
“Aw, Doc, I’m touched,” Jack said reverting to his slightly sarcastic, smart arse nature when he couldn’t deal with the seriousness of the situation.
“Touched in the head, you mean,” Rose said breaking from the Doctor’s embrace and thumping Jack on the shoulder.
“Have to be to keep carrying on with the two of you,” Jack replied.
“So you’re going to then? Keep carrying on with the lot of us?” Rose asked, her seriousness back in place.
Jack swallowed hard as he glanced back and forth between them. “Yeah. You’re my family, too. And speaking of family, how much trouble would I get into for…um…entertaining your mother when she was bored?”
“Depends on what you mean by entertaining,” Rose said her eyes narrowing sharply and her voice picking up a warning tone. Jack smiled at her enigmatically.
“I need to pick up a few things from my room,” Jack said heading towards the door to the kitchen.
“Jack, wait. What do you mean by entertaining?” Rose called after him. “Jack? Jack!”
When Jack didn’t answer she made to go after him, but the Doctor grabbed onto her arm, stopping her in her tracks. “Think we were in the middle of something,” he reminded her gently.
Rose looked at him, then back at the hallway, then back at him again. “But…but if he slept with my mother—.”
“Don’t even go there. I’m sure Jack didn’t. He’s just teasing to get back at us for leaving him behind,” the Doctor said. “He understands that some things are verboten.”
“I’m not so sure about that. Mum can be pretty persuasive when she’s bored and it’s been a while since she’s had a man,” Rose said. “And since Jack never takes convincing—.”
“I do not need to know this,” the Doctor said, holding up a hand.
“Well, I do,” she said. “I won’t be able to concentrate if I’m worrying about what the two of them got up to while we were away.”
The Doctor rolled his eyes and gave in. Rose headed to the corridor just as Jack was returning from his room, a small bag in his hand. “Just what exactly have you and Mum been up to?” she demanded.
Jack laughed. “Relax, Rose. Your mother and I have just been playing Scrabble. I’ll leave you two to it. Do you think three hours will be long enough or should I spend another night at Jackie’s?”
Rose blushed. “It’ll be long enough,” she said.
“Dinner then?” Jack asked. “I’ll cook.”
“Sounds lovely.”
She watched Jack head towards the console room and then the Doctor pulled her the other direction and into their bedroom. They slowly undressed each other and the Doctor laid her down on the bed. He was about to resume his previous activity just as Rose said, “Wait a minute! Playing Scrabble is a euphemism for—.” And then he did something clever with his tongue and she found herself not really caring about anything other than that.
The next morning when Rose woke up she found the Doctor sitting in a chair next to the bed watching her. She blinked sleepy eyes open and then sat up in shock. “You shaved your beard off!” she cried out indignantly.
“Yeah. Thought maybe it’d be a peace offering for your mum for the wedding,” he admitted.
“But…I liked the beard.”
“You saying you don’t like me without it?” he grumbled.
“Of course I do. Fell in love with that face, but…” She sighed. “I guess you can always grow it back after. You’re right. It’ll make Mum easier to cope with.
“Took a jaunt to Rigel while you were sleeping, too, once Jack came back for the night. He picked up the stuff you need if you still want to be a blonde for the wedding,” he said.
“You sure we made it back in time?” Rose asked. “I thought we weren’t leaving Earth again until after the wedding.”
“The TARDIS claims we did and I sent Jack out to get a copy of the Times just to be sure,” he said. “I’m not that rubbish a driver, honestly, Rose.” Rose raised her eyebrows, but didn’t argue the point with him. “I’m not. I made the TARDIS promise me she’d be careful about it. Bad landings are half her fault.” A nasty grinding of gears squealed through the ship and the Doctor turned to look at the wall reproachfully. “Well, they are.”
Rose patted the wall gently before struggling up out of the bed and stumbling a little awkwardly to the loo. Afterwards she turned the shower on full blast and called out, “Want to join me?”
“Love to, Rosie, but I—.”
“She’s talking to me, Jack,” growled the Doctor’s voice. Rose laughed. Jack must have returned with the newspaper.
“Don’t wash your hair, Rose,” Jack called in. “Your mum says she’ll dye it this afternoon.”
“Okay,” she hollered back. She heard the Doctor and Jack talking in muted voices and then a moment later the bathroom door shut and locked. The Doctor pulled back the screen and slipped into the shower behind her.
“So are we when we’re supposed to be?” she asked him as he reached for the big, fluffy sponge Rose loved and squirted it with soap. Gently he began to massage it into her back.
“Yep. We were only gone a couple of hours,” he said in his best how could you ever doubt me voice.
Rose smiled. “Good. I don’t want anything interfering with our plans these next few days. I just want to get through this wedding and then finish up this pregnancy and have our baby. I feel like I’m getting bigger by the minute.”
“Good. You should be. It means our son is growing healthy and strong,” the Doctor said.
“I know,” she said with a wan smile. “It’s just that I’m so tired of being huge.”
The Doctor’s arms came around her and held her close. He nuzzled the back of her neck. “I can still get my arms around you,” he said, “with room to spare.” He held her close for a minute before resuming washing her body. He followed the sponge with gentle kisses down her back before turning her around so that he could wash the front of her body.
His mind soon turned to other things after they were both clean and he knelt before her, water raining down over her back as he gently sucked a nipple into his mouth. He was careful, respectful of its tenderness. Rose leaned back against the shower wall, one hand steadying her and the other resting in the Doctor’s hair. “How you can still want me when I’m like this…”
He pulled back a moment, his earnest blue eyes finding hers. “Always will. No matter what you look like.”
“Yeah, but…you’re insatiable lately.”
“Pregnancy hormones don’t just affect you, Rose,” he said, his hands stroking her belly. “Gallifreyan males react strongly to the mothers of their children in the latter stages of pregnancy. It makes us extremely protective, but when there is no danger to protect against, it gets channeled into desire instead.” He shrugged.
“So you’re biologically programmed to lust after me the bigger I get?” she asked.
“Sort of, yeah.” His hands began roaming again and Rose eased her legs apart as his fingers sought access.
“Nice to know you won’t wander off,” she said with a smile.
“I’m not the one with the penchant for wandering off,” he said.
“You’re as guilty of it as me and you know it,” she teased. “I’ve had to—oh!” She leaned more heavily against the wall. “That’s very nice.”
He grinned up at her as one slippery finger entered her. “Someone’s wet.”
“It is a shower, Doctor,” she replied with false innocence.
“Inside,” he said his voice darkening just a bit.
“Hmm, can’t imagine why,” she giggled. “So, what do you think? Aren’t we a bit beyond shower sex at the moment? Shouldn’t we move this to the bedroom?”
“I’m game if you are,” he said. “I’m strong enough to hold you up.”
Rose was sorely tempted but she was more afraid of losing their balance and falling. That had happened once or twice at the best of times when she didn’t have a giant belly in the way. “I think I’ve lost my desire for that kind of adventure at the moment,” she said regretfully. “A nice, soft bed sounds like a better option.”
“Okay.” He turned her around and kissed her thoroughly, exploring her mouth for several long minutes before pulling away. Rose wobbled a bit. He could still make her weak in the knees.
They made sure all trace of suds were washed from their bodies and then the Doctor tenderly dried Rose off and briskly dried himself while she settled in the center of the big bed on her side. They were severely limited in the positions they could use now and Rose found this one to be easiest. He snuggled up against her back, his hand reaching between her thighs to stroke gently for a few moments, playing idly with her clit until she made a soft little sound of pleasure.
“Good?” he asked.
“Always is with you,” she said. He pulled his hand back, positioning himself at her entrance and with a gentle thrust slid home. “Mmm,” she sighed as he filled her. He began to ghost his hand up and down her side and over her breasts in slow, measured movements that matched his rhythm inside her.
It was carefully paced lovemaking. Aggressive or athletic sex was behind them for the time being, but Rose found herself enjoying these tender moments of passion immensely. They were more intense since the bonding and she always felt him at the edges of her mind, a reassuring presence that spoke of extreme love and devotion to her and their child.
He rocked gently against her, his thrusts long and deep, but careful. She sighed softly as he focused on her nipple, rolling it between his fingers then circling the areola. His hand spread wide, kneading the mounded flesh before using feather light touches down her abdomen. His hand settled then at the apex to her thighs, his index finger sliding between her soft wet folds and unerringly finding his target.
Rose squirmed, her legs rising up involuntarily as he stroked her clit. She pushed her backside into him. Sensation flooded her body as his lips fastened on the back of her neck. The man was so damn good at this. He kissed his way up to her ear, his breath heavy, his tongue circling about the shell and sending a jolt of pleasure through her body. She whimpered her approval and his finger began to circle her clit faster. “Ready to come?” he whispered in her ear.
“More than ready,” she panted back. She felt heat tingling through her skin, felt his mental presence increase in her mind as he flooded her body with his own emotions and desire. It increased her own, raising the tension coiled within her to the breaking point. “Oh…OH!” she cried out as the orgasm flared through her pelvis and she was awash in nothing more than sensation as her muscles tightened and clenched. “I love you!” she wailed and the conscious thought left her mind and she drifted purely on feeling, the Doctor with her, inside her both mentally and physically as he found his own release in the woman he adored.
