Title: Breaking Up is Hard to Do
Author: Amberfocus
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose
Genre: Gen, teasing, flirting, touch of angst
Rating: Teen
Beta: Amyo67
Summary: The Doctor's ready to start a relationship with Rose, but not until she breaks things off for good with Mickey.
A/N: Happy Birthday, Azriona, who wanted teasing and banter and Nine and Rose and not necessarily smut. This also counts as my entry in the Storm_and_Wolf ficathon using the prompt: Humility is no substitute for a bad personality.
Breaking Up is Hard to Do
“This is the very definition of procrastination, Rose.”
“What?”
“This thing you’re doing. Avoiding going up to the flat,” the Doctor said.
Rose was sitting on the jump seat swinging her legs and looking down at her chipped nail polish. She wondered if the Doctor would give her enough time while they were home to go and get a cheap manicure with Shireen. “Yeah, well, Mickey’s up there and I don’t want to see him yet.”
“You’re gonna have to tell Rickey he’s been replaced sometime,” he said. “And by someone smarter and with much better equipment.”
Rose laughed. “That equipment crack remains to be seen,” she said eyeing him speculatively. “Mickey isn’t exactly a slouch in that department.”
The Doctor growled. “I meant the TARDIS, versus that little yellow…thing he drives,” he said.
“Sure you did.” Rose kicked her feet a bit harder. “Didn’t you used to have a little yellow car?” she asked.
“You leave Bessie out of this,” he said somewhat grumpily. “She was a good car, she was. And I needed something to get around in while the TARDIS was grounded. And she was a lot bigger than that Beatle of his.”
“Seems like she’s still getting grounded a lot in the search for new parts. Maybe we should get a little car. Though I don’t know how it’d fit down the ramp. Maybe a Vespa?”
“The day I drive a scooter is the day I wear a suit and tie and pretend to be Elvis,” he said rolling his eyes at her.
“Sounds like fun to me, riding around alien cities, wind in my hair, arms wrapped around you,” she mused.
“Doesn’t sound all bad,” he grudgingly admitted. “But we’d get a real motorcycle, Rose. Something with power. Maybe one of those Japanese racing cycles from 3017 that we saw at the anti-gravity Olympics,” he suggested.
“You’d have to keep it on the ground while we’re on Earth,” she said.
“Only in certain centuries. It’d be fun. So would be showing it off to your boyfriend,” the Doctor egged her on.
“He’s not my boyfriend.”
“He is until you tell him he’s not,” the Doctor said firmly crossing his arms over his chest and looking down at his little companion. “I’ll not be starting that kind of a relationship with you until you tell him it’s done. We agreed. It’s the right thing to do.”
“I could send him a letter,” she suggested.
“No.”
“What happened to it’s a whole different morality out there?” Rose asked plaintively.
“Rose, you are going to march out there right now and tell that boy you are breaking up with him. Not later tonight. Not tomorrow. Today. Right now.”
“I know. It’s just…it’s Mickey. We’ve been friends for as long as I can remember. How do I break his heart?”
“Tell him that I’m more clever, richer, more handsome, a better dresser—.”
“Pride goes before a fall,” Rose quoted. “At least Mickey’s humble over his achievements.”
“Humility is no substitute for a bad personality, Rose. Think how humble he is, and how much he won’t stand up. And anyway, Rickey has no achievements. The only one it might have been possible for him to claim was getting the girl and now that’s gone.”
“That’s not fair. How’s he supposed to compete with you? And a bit of humility would do you good in the personality department, Doctor.”
“I think you’ll find I have one of the most fantastic personalities you’ll ever meet and humility has no part in it.”
“Yeah, tell me about it. I’d noticed the way your personality enters the room a full five minutes before you do,” she said dryly.
“What’s that meant to mean?” he asked sounding just a trifle hurt.
“Nothing.” She jumped up from the jump seat. “Okay, then, Mr. Fantastic, you tell Mickey I’m breaking up with him,” she said stubbornly crossing her arms over her own chest.
“I’d love to.”
“So that you and I can start whatever it is we’ve been starting all along.”
“Nope, that part is your job.”
“But you just said—.”
“Said I’d love to. Didn’t say I would. It’s your responsibility. I’ve seen you face down Autons and Gelth and Slitheen in Downing Street. You faced down a Dalek and me holding a gun on you. You watched your father die and you still sat by his side and held his hand and eased his way. You’re Rose Tyler and you can do this or you’re not the kind of woman I think you are,” he said.
Her pride stung awake, she stood up. “I can do it,” she said. “I will do it.”
“There’s my girl,” he said fondly.
She marched to the front door and then turned and threw back at him, “All I can say is that the sex better be damn well worth it.”
The Doctor stared at her as she walked out of the TARDIS a small smile crossing his face as he thought of making love to her for the first time. Then another thought occurred to him and he raced for the doors. “You meant with me, right?” he shouted after her. Rose turned around and gave him that enigmatic smile of hers and waved.
“Back in a bit,” she called back and hurried on her way.

Date: 2009-09-15 05:58 pm (UTC)I dislike the way the Doctor is so totally dissing Mickey in this, but that's not to say it's out of character. So I liked the punchline even more.

I almost ruptured something howling with laughter at this.
And that last little comment from the Doctor? Priceless.
Think your insecurity is showing just a little bit there, Doctor LOL

In what other conceivable way could Rose have taken that comment to mean XD?

::giggle::
This is a funny mix of different kinds of immaturity. Rose's weedling and understandable procrastination vs the Doctor's impatience and "I'm so obviously better than Mickey, duh." Something for them to grow from, I suppose.
“All I can say is that the sex better be damn well worth it."
Hahaha, you tell him, Rose.
