*is playing remove the nasty ransomware virus from my computer again*

I didn't click on anything.  How the heck is this thing continuing to reinstall itself on my computer when I don't even accept it?

I think I will spring for the non-free version of the Malwarebytes software.  It's not that much.  But still, my freaking expensive other program should not even let this virus on in the first place.

I am so done with you, www.surfthechannel.com.  I know it's you doing it.  Stupid website.  And with me only needing to watch one more ep of...what I was watching.  Netflix might be here tomorrow with it, but I'm thinking Monday.  I suppose this is what I get for being impatient.  Netflix, why can't you stream questionable teenage CW shows just like you do Doctor Who and Torchwood?  Why?  And questionable teenage CW shows, why must you have so many bloody cliffhangers?  People who do cliffhangers this often should be shot.  Oh...wait a minute.  Pot, kettle, black.  Oops.  They should be taken out and sternly told to knock it off unless it's reeeeeeeally important to the plot.  Yeah, that's it.  And possibly sent to bed without supper.

Am still annoyed at the hubby for taking my connection cord from my external hard drive to Alaska with him for three bloody weeks.  Because of that I haven't transferred all the stuff off my computer that I need to transfer off, so yay, I get to sit through another one hour scan.  I am very tempted to go buy one in the morning, but that would mean going to Best Buy, which is bad enough on its own, but with the children...*shudders*

If I could just freaking write, it wouldn't even be so bad, but this computer is only a two hamster drive and one of the hamsters is on strike and the other one is sick or possibly pregnant, so it doesn't support Office and Word or you know, anything much made in this century (Windows ME, people!)

Argh.  Just GTFO of my computer AV Security Suite ransomware virus.  And stay out.

Ohhhhh Surfthechannel is where I got the virus that killed my computer a year and a half ago and I was the same, I didn't click on anything, it must've been a "trapped" ad that loaded the virus on me instead of downloading a banner image. I had the virus hit me to a lesser degree the first time and I was able to remove it but then I foolishly played the "oh, what are the chances that it'll happen AGAIN?" card and blammo, dead computer. :( I had to wipe the hard drive to finally get it 100% off of there, I hate to tell you. :( *crosses fingers that you'll have better luck*

You might try running the anti-virus and other such scans in Safe Mode because often these viruses will "hide" in files that can't be deleted if that component is up and running at the moment. That might flush out the bugger wherever it's managing to keep hiding. I was told to turn off my System Restore before running the virus scans to prevent a copy of the virus from being "protected" by System Restore. However when I turned System Restore off, I was unable to turn it back on, so beware of that. But the virus had buggered Windows so badly that was just another symptom of it (I couldn't connect to Automatic Updates any more, the Windows Security Center was disabled, etc.).

Anyway, I definitely recommend staying away from Surfthechannel for, well, forever, lol. ;) Or at the very least, don't go there without using Firefox loaded up with Adblock Plus, NoScript and FlashBlocker to try and prevent any of the ads from sneaking in like that.

*sigh* I hate virus-making malware-spreading hacker no-goodniks! All they do is create these things to destroy the computers of people they'll never even meet, much less ever have a gripe against! >:[

Good luck, hon! *hugs* ♥!

I've caught nasties embedding themselves in my drivers folder, so that when the computer turns on, the software gets reinstalled.

It's insidious!

Those malware things can be VERY persistant. Just keep runing Malwarebytes. Pain in the butt I know but WORTH it.

Good luck

According to my tech support friend in New Zeland, the Malwarebytes is really the best out there.

my work computer has been infected twice, possible 3 times though we caught the 3rd one before it managed to make me have to completely wipe the computer clean, by google jacked websites. That's when you click the link in Google but it takes you somewhere else that downloads a piece of malware - usually a trojan worm.

I just installed a free addon for MacAfee that checks the links and displays a green check if it's clear. So far it's working great.

I am SO glad I have a mac at home...

Have you tried running MalwareBytes in safemode with networking? Usually running it in safe mode first and then running it again in normal mode usually really gets rid of most malware. Its what we have to do when running AV sweeps at the computer repair company I work for.

I've been having problems with that same thing. And I can't even figure out where I'm getting it from.

I rarely comment here, but I enjoy your writing very much and it kills me that a stupid trojan is keeping you from it. I have a lot of experience with cleaning this stuff off and have never had to wipe a hard drive to get things back to normal (for Windows). Malwarebytes really is the best. One important thing has already been mentioned (turning off System Restore and/or running in safe mode). If it's particularly tenacious running something called hijack this is the next step. Sometimes just running it takes care of the last of the nasties. If not, there are ways to get it to generate a log and hand remove the little buggers. But just running hijack this after a full scan of malwarebytes will often do the trick. If I can help at all, feel free to email me. I'm me at gmail.

OH, Sweetie, I'm so sorry about that. I hope it gets cleared up soon.

ANd I know what you mean about Best Buy. Although, these days I don't mind going with my oldest because he's got his own money and is, at 18, at least starting to learn that I am not going to foot the bill for everything and if he can't afford it he'll just have to wait.

*hugs you and sends cookies for the hamsters*(maybe it'll make them work harder)

Stopping by to say that I'm also a fan of your fic. Whenever I've gotten malware I google the name of it and usually find step by step instructions for how to remove that specific thing. Whatever it is, someone else has probably asked experts online. Just my two cents.

If you're using Firefox as a web browser, get the Firefox addon AdBlockPlus. It keeps ads from loading, which should keep you from getting re-infected from icky corrupted advertising. Bonus - no more of those annoying video ads that take over your speakers.

Can't you watch the show you want on Hulu?

That really does suck. Few things are as frustrating as persistent computer problems. I've heard good things about Malwarebytes. I hope it works out well for you. Most of the advice I would give is already in the other comments. Good luck!

I feel your pain. I have an unusable PC laptop due to all the trojans & malware. Malwarebytes is good while my other anti-virus didn't catch a thing. I may use some of the suggestions here to help with it.

But ultimately I used the tax return to buy a refurbished Mac laptop. Not a peep since.

Good luck. As I love your writing I hope for its quick return.

ImageI'd second the recommendation above for using AdBlock (here (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865)). Very effective and totally unobtrusive! If you use it BTW, part of the process is to subscribe to one of their (free) services that monitor which urls are ads. You just pick which one (language/region) is going to be relevant to what you browse. I didn't realise that at first.

However, given your problem, I'd more importantly recommend NoScript (here (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722)).

This blocks any and all scripts from running when you first visit a page. Obviously this means that menus and so forth don't work but you can then selectively enable the scripts according to their source (see image). This means that you can enable the main site (menus etc) while keeping the malware and spyware at bay.

It remembers the settings for each site, which means that although you generally have to load each site twice at first visit, it's unobtrusive from then on. It took me a couple of reloads to work out which scripts I had to enable to get LJ to work correctly again for example, but once done, no issues. In fact, I've had no problems with it at all except that it updates every week or so as the maintainers discover new malware and this can be a bit irritating as it requires a restart of Firefox. Worth it though and reassuring to know they're so efficient.

ETD: Edited to correct a link that was wrong.

That sucks. I got hit with three malwares and a trojan earlier this week that Webroot caught, so I know how you feel. I hope your able to get the viruses out soon.

You've summed my life up, right there. I try to avoid going anywhere with children if at all possible.

Hope your computer woes are over by now!
