Day 05  A show you hate

Before last year I would have said Seinfield, but it was replaced by something that wasn't even a comedy, even though it's billed as one.  The Office (US Version).  I do not get this show's appeal.  At all.  It's not even funny.  It's uncomfortably awful.  I watched the first eighteen episodes last year, hoping to force myself through it to get to the supposed "good stuff."  But sorry, the good stuff never came.  The main character made me want to put forks in my eyes and If I'd had to sit through anymore of his rotten behavior, I probably would have.  I know you're supposed to dislike the character, but this guy is...loathsome.  He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.  AND I was promised some epic love story, but basically all I ever saw was a sad droopy guy in love with some girl who was already in a relationship.  True, she was in a relationship with an ass, but you just don't pursue someone who is in a committed relationship.  I do not understand how this show ever made it past the pilot, let alone into its sixth season.  It's just...bad.  Bad writing.  Bad acting.  Bad characters you can't respect, let alone fall in love with.  And a total waste of film.

The first season was bad, yes. It got better in the second season. Mostly because they gave Michael some redeeming qualities. Granted, he's still a horrible boss, but he's not that bad a guy - he just tries too hard and has very little social skills.

My biggest beef with the first season was that it tried to match the UK version too closely - we watched both, Bill and I, and really, that's what the US version is: the UK Office with American accents. It didn't work, and once the show went off on its on in the second season, it got much, much better.

Generally, when I find out that someone's going to try watching it, I tell them to skip the first season. You really don't miss anything, and you can skip the awfulness.

And it didn't help that they replaced Ricky Gervais with Steve Carrell not long into the first season's run.

I can't watch this show, either. I found it makes me squirm instead of laugh. I just think it's way too realistic, way too much like real life, and I don't see what's funny about that.

My husband and I tried it, and we couldn't actually see what was supposed to be funny. Everything that happened in the first episode had happened in our office (we worked at the same place at the time) in the past three days. We weren't sure British accents would help, because it was still too realistic to us.

For some reason, what's funny in short doses (Dilbert, Working Daze) just isn't funny when you're sitting there going - "But, I work for that guy. No, really, I do."

I thought I was the only one

I hear how great the office is all the time. I haven't made if through a single episode. I thought I was the only one who didn't get it. I'm glad I'm in good company.

I absolutely agree. I'm in awe that you were able to watch that much of it. I have not been able to get through a single ep. I put it all down to the writers. i actually love Steve Carrell, (sp?), he is usually in a sympathetic and engaging role. But this show is horrific. Embarrassing to watch. I do not understand why anyone likes it. I have been known to like anti-heros, (anyone remember Basil Fawlty?), but I really like your word "loathsome". Saya it all!

I've never seen the American version, the British one was bad enough for me! All around me people were saying how good it was, but I could never see it.

Ooh yay, I'm so glad other people don't like this show either. I've never watched enough of it to hate it, but I have seen it and I have never found it funny. It's like South Park. One of my friends was always urging me to watch that too, and I never laughed once. I thought maybe I just didn't get it, but now I really think it's just not funny.

I 've seen a bit and its awful but I still have to go with Seinfield as my most hated choice. The characters in this are just plain terrible and when I heard what happened to them in the finale I thought yep, its where they belong.
