Characters/Pairings:  Ten/Rose
Genre:  Romance, Baby!fic
Rating:  PG-13 at the moment

Summary:  After losing the TARDIS, the Doctor and Rose must make a life for themselves on the slow path.  AU from the middle of The Satan Pit.
A/N:  I volunteered to pinch hit a Support Stacie fic.  The person wanted fluff, baby!fic, smut, and Ten/Rose living the one adventure they could never have.
Chapter One

“A cruise ship?” Rose asked in consternation. Of all the things that the Doctor had suggested they do after losing the TARDIS, this was the oddest request of all. “You want to work on a cruise ship?”

“It’s not just any cruise ship, Rose!” the Doctor said grandly. He said most things grandly, he always had, but there was just a hint of desperation in his voice as these particular words came out. “It’s the finest luxury liner on the Arcturan Space Lanes, the most sensational space ship in 300 galaxies, the crown jewel of the Odyssey Starline, the ultimate experience in this or any other universe—.”

“You’ve been watching those late night infomercials again, haven’t you?” Rose asked, arms crossed over her chest and fighting a smile. “You know what I’ve said about those. They’re all scams.”

“No,” said the Doctor a bit too hastily. Rose continued to stare at him steadily until he added guiltily, “It’s not my fault I can’t sleep the whole night away. And it wasn’t infomercials, honest. It was the Midnight Job Market.”

“That’s nearly as bad,” she said.

“Well, I checked it out. I made sure the offer was legitimate. They need a mechanic well-versed in hyperspace engines and 51st century computer technology.” He made air quotes with his fingers as he said the last two words. “They won’t find a better expert than me.”

“And what do I do while you work on engines all day?” she asked.

“Weeeellll,” he said, drawing out the word as if his tongue was playing with it, “they have multiple openings in their shops, food service, and housekeeping departments. Or…”

“Or?”

“Well, they have an opening for a chanteuse.”

Rose looked startled, her arms falling to her sides. “A singer?” He nodded. “But I—.”

“You’ve got a lovely voice, Rose. Why should I be the only one who ever hears it?” he asked.

“What if I don’t want to do any of those things?” she asked.

“It beats staying here,” he said disdainfully looking around the tiny flat they’d rented for the last two and a half years. It looked dingy and dirty despite the fact that he and Rose had spent several hours scrubbing it clean when they’d first moved in and kept it neat and tidy. Rose had refused to let him use his sonic screwdriver to steal money from credit points in a city they were going to be living in permanently so they’d had to make do with what they could afford.

The Doctor had had a small pink diamond in his transdimensional pockets that they’d been able to trade for enough credits to set them up in the little flat, buy a couple of rubbish pieces of furniture, a really good bed, and to fill the semi-functional refrigerator and pantry with food. They’d both quickly found menial work, and the Doctor, after much looking, had eventually found a job as a mechanic at a third rate shuttle repair shop

They’d been able to pay the rent and survive and consistently scrape up enough extra credits each month to put in a savings account. The Doctor wanted to buy a small space ship of their very own one day, even if it was just a junker he had to restore. He had his eye on one down at the local wrecking yard that he thought he could recover with enough elbow grease.

Their lives hadn’t been easy. The Doctor had gotten along okay because he knew several alien languages, but Rose hadn’t even a grasp of standard basic and had to learn it from scratch. It’d taken her six months to speak well enough to be understood by more than just the Doctor. It’d been a year before she’d been confident enough to move out of her position as a maid at a rundown hotel and into food service for what basically came down to a fast food franchise where she worked with the public. For the last six months she’d been working in a clothing shop and had just been promoted to management five weeks earlier. Things were finally coming together. It was a far cry from where they’d started even if it wasn’t a perfect life.

Neither one of them had adapted well to being tied down to one place, but with the common goal of one day owning a little ship and getting off this mud ball called Radicchio, named after some ridiculous earth vegetable for a reason no one could remember, it had been a little easier. This was where they’d been deposited after their desperate flight from Krop Tor and what Rose was still sure had been the devil himself. With no money to move on, this was where they’d stayed. At least they were together, the Doctor would say over and over again when he held her while she fell asleep. That’s what mattered the most. Now, though, it seemed like he was giving up on their dream.

“What about the ship?” Rose asked. “We’ve worked so hard. We’ve got nearly enough to buy that Trollian zipper. You were gonna fix it up. It was gonna be…home.”

The Doctor pulled Rose into his arms, kissing her softly on the mouth. She melted into the kiss as she always did, but he pulled away a moment later. “Home is wherever we are as long as we’re together. You know that. And we’ll get to see the universe again. Plus, the pay…” The Doctor named a figure.

“A year?” Rose asked, her eyes growing huge.

“A month,” the Doctor said.

Her eyes got even larger. “Where do we sign up?”

The Doctor smiled. “I’ve got the applications right here. You just need to decide what you want to do. I’ve already been hired.”

“You were that sure I’d say yes?”

He nodded. “I know you, Rose Tyler. Better than anyone. Of course I knew you’d say yes.”

“And what if they don’t hire me?”

“Oh, they will. And if they don’t, there’s a way around that,” he said waving it away. “A way for you to come with me. It’s one of the benefits listed in the hiring package.”

“What?”

“I can bring my wife with me. We’ll just get married,” he said. “I’ll leave you to it,” the Doctor added, not noticing Rose’s dumbfounded look of shock. “Got an errand to run. Back in a bit.”

While the Doctor was gone she filled out one of the applications and spent the rest of the time packing up their few possessions. She had deliberately not thought about what he’d said at first. She was sure she’d imagined it anyway, but the longer he was gone the more she couldn’t help but mull it over. The Doctor couldn’t have really said they could get married. Yes, things had changed since starting life on the slow path. They’d become lovers shortly after arriving on this forsaken planet. He no longer shied away from things domestic. But scrubbing the dishes clean and folding the laundry were a far cry from settling down as husband and wife.

With the Doctor’s return, she couldn’t avoid it any longer. “Doctor, we need to talk. About what you said.”

He handed Rose a small paper bag. “There you go,” he said.

“Are you listening to me?”

“Just open it,” he told her.

A small, neatly wrapped bundle was inside the sack, “What’s this?” she asked.

“Open it,” he repeated, rocking back and forth from heel to toe and looking at her a little anxiously. She did. Inside the wrapping lay a small silver ring and glittering in a setting at the top was a brilliant pink diamond. A diamond she recognized.

“Doctor, what’d you—.”

“As soon as I had the money I got the diamond out of hock, had it set for you. It was always meant to be yours. I’ve been waiting for the right time to give it to you. Didn’t think when we were broke was the best time. I was waiting until we could buy the zipper, but with this new job, we’ll be able to live a comfortable life, still have a bit of adventure, and in a year buy a brand new ship, something that could really be a home like the…like the TARDIS was, not just something to flit around in. So, well—.”

“You’re serious?” Rose asked.

“Serious about what?”

“Wanting to marry me?”

“I said so, didn’t I?”

“Not exactly,” Rose said.

“Well, I wasn’t carrying a pink diamond in my pocket for weeks before Krop Tor because I wanted us to stay just best mates forever, you know,” he told her. “So, what do you say, Rose? Will you marry me?”

“Not just to make things easier for me to come along if I don’t get hired?”

“Of course not,” he said sounding shocked that she’d even think it. “I know maybe this wasn’t the best proposal in the world, Rose. As much as I can talk, I’ve never been good with words when it comes down to romance, but…” He waved his hands helplessly then shrugged. “I want this.”

“Me, too.” She threw her arms around him and kissed him soundly on the mouth. He blinked for a moment before responding rather enthusiastically. She was glad a few moments later, as she always was, that the Doctor had insisted on getting a really good bed.

The first night on board after they’d received injections of nano translation bots to help them understand passengers who didn’t speak standard basic, the captain had married them in a simple, quick ceremony. They’d been given twenty-four hours before they had to report for duty in which to consummate their marriage. The captain had said this with a wink and a nudge, having assumed of course, that this was altogether unnecessary. Still, they’d appreciated it and made much use of their nuptial day.

Their accommodations were actually smaller than their ratty old flat had been, but everything was beautiful and elegant and the luxurious surroundings were wonderful. The room had its own private bath and it had a beautiful tub. She’d missed baths. The flat had only had a shower and she had longed for the ability to soak away her aches and pains. Now she had a bath but no longer had the aches and pains of her previous employment. She and the Doctor had rather awkwardly christened that tub right before Rose reported to work for the first time with a smile on her face so wide that she didn’t even mind the crazy customers she had to deal with in the upscale clothing boutique.

The Odyssey Dreamer was very much like a small city. At any given time it had a population of twenty thousand resident staff and between fifty and eighty thousand guests. Some people lived on board permanently. Passengers came on board for the trip of a lifetime touring twelve galaxies in a standard year. Some simply booked for a week or a month, visiting some special destination. It was a transient population, but there were regulars and Rose came to recognize them in the first few weeks.

It didn’t take her long to recover her old enthusiasm for life. She and the Doctor both had evenings and weekends off and took that time to explore the ship as they’d seldom done on Radicchio. She wasn’t sure they’d ever be able to see all of it in the year they’d signed on for. There were art galleries that rivaled museums she’d seen on Earth. The ship had fifteen different dance clubs, ten casinos, one hundred restaurants, forty-five retail outlets, several schools, one university, and five libraries, the largest of which had made the Doctor whimper in a way that he usually did only during sex.

They learned how to surf and to scuba dive in the special aquatic level of the ship. In her off hours Rose began studying for a license to be a diving instructor, so fascinated was she with the ocean environment and the creatures that enjoyed its depths on their way across the universe. She became close friends with something that resembled a dolphin and spent many hours chatting away sitting on a surf board while her friend lay on the surface of the water.

If their ports of call happened on their days off they’d disembark the ship for a bit of planet wandering. It made them both nostalgic for the old days despite their happiness with their current situation. On one planet the Doctor managed to foment a bloodless coup and on another rewrite an entire constitution in one night that changed everything for the better for its once enslaved citizenry. It was wonderful. Though Rose knew the Doctor still missed the TARDIS, he seemed reasonably content. She, at times, missed her mother and her friends from her old life, but she wouldn’t trade her new life for anything. The Doctor had been right in saying that home was wherever they were together. It truly was. She didn’t think anything could make it better. As it turned out, she was wrong.

Yay! New fic! Its so hard to picture the Doctor stranded without the TARDIS but he would totally go work on a space cruise ship. Can't wait for the rest :D

Yeah, it is hard to picture him without the TARDIS. I had to sit down and really think about what he'd do without it. He'd still want to see the universe and this was a good way to fill that need for him, as well as his need to tinker with engines, and yet still be close to Rose and sort of settled down.

Thank you. I don't write much in the way of baby!fic anymore and I know it's definitely something people either like or don't like, but I'm glad you gave reading it a try. It's been fun going back to my roots a bit and getting into a Ten/Rose baby!fic again.

Lisa. I want to say a huge thank you. The person you have written this for would no doubt be doing backflips and handstands of joy even after this one chapter. (well maybe not literally)

She'll be very happy and as such that makes me absolutely delighted.

The story is lovely and warm and everything that is Ten and Rose. I love how Ten just drops the important lines right into ordinary conversation that just blows Rose away but its beautiful and exactly him.

Really looking forward to more of this fic.

She seems pretty happy with it so far. It's going to end up closer to 6000 words instead of the required 2500, but this story wants to be told so it's been easy and a joy to write.

Yeah, Ten kinda just says stuff and Rose isn't expecting it in such simple moments. It's part of what I like about their relationship, though. Thank you, glad you are enjoying it.

Amazing.

You give enough detail that you FEEL the time that has passed while they're waiting there, and I just sort of picture the Doctor bouncing on his heels slightly with excitement as he sells Rose on joining the crew of the ship.

As always... you weave a wonderous web that leaves me wanting more.

And I SO want a trip on that ship! My husband promised me a cruise for our 5th anniversary - our 15th is next weekend and I'm still waiting (and no, the Jungle Cruise ride we went on at Magic Kindgom last weekend does NOT count!!!)

Thank you. I know, I want to go on a cruise, too, but I don't want to take the kids so we are going to wait until T starts college before we go. That's only eight more years. *laughs* The closest we get is the two hour ferry ride to Victoria, B.C. when we go up to Canada for vacations. But I can wait.

*grin* Well, we did one for our honeymoon and loved it, and my hubby promised we'd do one for our 5th anniversary. But I was pregnant then, and it's not much fun going on a cruise when you have 24 hour morning sickness. So I'm still waiting for my promised cruise!

Why don't you want to take the kids? Cruises today have all sorts of fun activities for kids - they'd probably love it!

Ooh, I like this. I love the kind of stories where the Doctor and Rose settle down somewhere together. Such an interesting what-if. And I love this cruise ship you've invented for them. Tell me, does Rose's dolphin friend talk back to her? I love that idea.

and five libraries, the largest of which had made the Doctor whimper in a way that he usually did only during sex.

LOL.

Also, randomly, I love your comment box.

And most of all, I love having a fun, fluffy Doctor/Rose fic to read after a very emotional evening watching the Lost finale. THANK YOU FOR THAT!!!

Date: 2010-05-25 08:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amberfocus.livejournal.com
Thank you. Yes, Rose's friend talks back to her. She's fully sentient and they can understand each other because of the nano translation bots.

Seriously, I think a very large and well equipped library would turn the Doctor on.

Oh, I know. That Lost finale had me leaking tears from my eyes (not crying, just leaking and sniffling) at so many points. This fic was a catharsis for me after that.

Yay! baby!fic!

And, Rose had refused to let him use his sonic screwdriver to steal money from credit points in a city they were going to be living in permanently so they’d had to make do with what they could afford.
I used this reasoning myself, and I am totally committed to it. I'm wondering what the timeline should be: do Rose and Ten get stuck in the future, get the TARDIS back, and THEN get stuck in 1969 for my fic? Or vice-versa? :)

Yes, and it's very good logic, I think. Because continued theft from cash points would surely get them noticed in a very negative way by the authorities if they were staying in one place.

As for your timeline, it's hard to say since I've not really figured out exactly where you are going with it, yet. I barely had a chance to read the update today. It was a hit and run, but I loved that they went to see Kathy and that Rose had to give in and let the Doctor use his psychic paper to get train tickets because they didn't have enough cash on hand.

This certainly looks like the promising beginning to a fun story, though I can't imagine any life with the Doctor, even on the slow path, would ever be entirely domestic. He's too good at finding where he's needed, also known as trouble. I must admit to being curious as to exactly how they got off Krop Tor without the aid of the TARDIS, unless he never went down into the pit.

I do admit that when I first heard him mentioning a galactic cruise ship, I did have flashbacks to the Christmas special on board the Titanic. It certainly does seem like the ideal job for them though, both stable and yet always moving and transient. A good spot to be till they get the funds for their own ship.

I look forward to the Doctors reaction to Rose being pregnate. I'm sure aside from shock, it may bring up memories of when he was a father and grandfather in the past. I'm almost positive he'll end up putting his foot in it more than once. For some one as verbally dexterous as he is, you'd think he'd be a bit better at communicating. Though he's always good in a crisis.

I do hope this story isn't all fluff, a bit of drama and angst is great for balancing things out. I also wonder if the subject of Rose's human lifespan will come up at all. After all, the Doctor won't age like she will and who's to say how long lived their child will be. I know I'm jumping way ahead, and such subjects may even not even be touched upon as those are concerns far down the road, even for the characters here.

I do admit that a part of me hates the idea of the Tardis being gone forever. I almost want to see the rather cliched idea of maybe finding a piece of the Tardis in which to grow a new one toward the end of this. Though it might even be a bit more fun, if with his penchant for finding trouble he ends up running across a past or future regeneration of himself. ( I know it's been done time and time again but it's always funny when done right. Even much of Shakespeare's works were not truly original, but old stories re-written for the people of his era)

Anywho I look forward to the next chapters and all adventures both alien and domestic.

This is more like a floating city than the star ship Titantic. Still called a cruise ship but much bigger than anything we'd know of as one. It felt like a good place to put them though, settled down but not.

Well, there's some drama, but not a lot in the way of angst. That being said, yes, the subject of Rose's lifespan will come up but perhaps not in a way that is expected. And really, it's too short of a fic to delve into all that sort of thing. I've done it much more thoroughly in my Moments in Darkness series, which is an angst-o-rama. Also the first dozen or so chapters of You're What? So, this is more the light and fluffy side of things, which was what the bidder wanted.
