Chapter Thirty-Six: Reunion

By the time it started to become obvious that they were going to survive, everyone but Rose and Lee, who wasn’t cleared to know much of what was going on at Torchwood and who’d remained behind to watch over the sick woman to have some way of being useful, had gathered in Ianto’s office to view the battle going on in the heavens high above planet Earth. Or at least the computer simulated version of it. As it became clear that success was theirs, jubilation rocked the room and hugs and high fives were exchanged all around. If the hug between Davin and Tosh seemed to take twice as long as the hugs between anyone else, nobody noticed, or at least nobody chose to comment on it.

Once the S.H.E.L.D.I.N. devices had done their initial job they’d each flown through the hulls of the Monoc’teru space ships kamikaze-style and directly into the engine rooms, self-destructing within the hyper drives and causing a chain reaction that destroyed everything and everyone aboard. The remaining three ships were easily caught and destroyed trying to flee the solar system by the arriving allied forces of their enemies. Apparently the Teroc’manu and the other races that had spent centuries enslaved by the Monoc’teru had had enough. They’d come in hot, dirty, and broadcasting their intentions on all known military bands of radio. By the time the fleet was through, not even one Monoc’teru life pod remained intact.

Reports began trickling in as Torchwood and UNIT divisions started reporting their situations. People around the world had returned to sanity, but everything around them was in shambles. The Monoc’teru still on Earth, when they weren’t being murdered on sight, were being arrested in droves and turned over to the allies to bring to justice. Thousands of the shiny, little inactivated spheres had been smashed to smithereens; their remains gathered and melted down in public bonfires. Rebuilding was going to take longer than after the last wholesale invasion the planet had seen. That had not caused near the amount of damage to the infrastructure as this.

Torchwood and UNIT began to pick up the pieces, the military helping as much as it could to restore order in the U.K. Ianto sent Katie home to Owen with orders not to return until she was called in. Andy, too, returned to his wife and young daughter, who’d been safely tucked away with his parents, both officers with UNIT and all of whom had been treated with the vaccine as soon as it had become available. Mickey and Jake had spent their time helping via satellite phone to coordinate the restoration of Torchwood London in the real Pete Tyler’s absence, but the strain on the men of not knowing what had happened to Suzie was beginning to take its toll. Ianto told them both that the moment Suzie and the Doctor returned they were both off duty.

Eventually Domina and Lee McAvoy returned home and President Harriet Jones sent for Ianto. He left Toshiko and Davin in joint charge of operations while he went to her since neither of them had family to get back to or felt the need to take a break from the last few weeks’ events.

“It’s so quiet,” said Tosh. “I’d gotten quite used to their being a hum of activity in the hub. I don’t imagine it ever gets quiet at Torchwood London.”

“No, it seldom does,” Davin said. “I’ve always thrived on that kind of action, but there is something to be said for downtime,” he said. “You hungry?”

“Yeah. I wish we could just order a pizza, but it’s going to be a while before the restaurants are back up and running.”

“Well, there’s still a freezer full of Domina’s cooking in the break room,” he said. “Care to join me?” He held out his hands to her and with a laugh she put hers into his and let him pull her to her feet.

They slipped down to the small kitchen off the break room and Davin pawed through the entrees in the freezer. “Looks like chili, enchiladas, shepherd’s pie, or lamb curry are our choices.”

“Oh, lamb curry,” said Tosh. “I loved that one.” He handed her one of the containers and grabbed chili for himself. They heated their food in the twin microwaves, settling down on the sofa to wait.

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt so tired before after an incursion ended,” Tosh said rubbing the back of her neck. Almost automatically Davin reached over and started working on the tight knots in her shoulders. “It’s been a crazy few weeks.”

“Yeah,” Davin said in a subdued voice.

Tosh twisted under his fingers to look at him in surprise. He looked more than tired. He looked defeated. “We won, you know. We saved the world. You’re supposed to be happy,” she told him.

He gave her a wan smile. “I am. It’s just…” He trailed off, his eyes glancing upwards. She couldn’t tell if it was simply at the ceiling or in the direction of the conference room where Rose slept.

“Are you still having a hard time with Rose and the Doctor?” Tosh asked with sympathy.

“What?” he said in consternation. “No. I’ve made my peace with that. They love each other so much. I’ve never had something like that, something so powerful, so strong. And I want it for myself, you know? I want to have that kind of love.”

“Who wouldn’t?” Tosh asked.

His hands stilled and he pulled them away, turning to look at her earnestly. “I realize that it can’t be with Rose. That it shouldn’t be with Rose. I let myself fall in love with a woman who could never fully love me back and that’s less than I deserve.”

“It’s less than anyone deserves,” said Tosh with a light smile. “Especially you, Davin McBain, because you’re pretty terrific you know. Now all you need to do is find the right woman for you.” The microwaves dinged in unison and she sighed and stretched and then got up to retrieve their meals. Setting them on a tray she carried it over to the coffee table. She headed back for the fridge. “I’m grabbing myself a beer. Want me to get you one?”

“Yeah, please.”

She returned a moment later and proffered him a cold bottle. He twisted the top open and gulped down a few mouthfuls. She watched his throat move as he swallowed and sat down with a wistful smile on her face, hiding it quickly as he put down his bottle.

“So when do you go back?” she asked.

“I don’t want to go back,” he said at the same time. She waved at him to continue. “I haven’t felt this alive in—I don’t even know how long.”

“Maybe you can stay.”

“Actually, Ianto’s asked me to stay on here. Before he left.”

“He…has he?” she said.

“Yes, but there’s a lot to consider.”

“And are you considering it?”

He shrugged. “I am. Do you think it’s a good idea for me to stick around?” he asked her, his brilliant blue eyes suddenly focused intently on her.

“Well, I never did get a chance to show you around Cardiff,” she said. “Take you pubbing and clubbing like I promised.”

“Tosh,” he said. His hand reached out and covered the back of hers and she looked at him with startled doe eyes. “This is a big decision for me. I need to know what you think.”

“You work well with us,” Tosh allowed. She shifted and his hand fell away.

“I work well with you,” he said intensely.

Tosh felt a blush rising up on her cheeks at his words. “That you do. We made quite a team.” She paused but curiosity got the better of her and she had to ask, “So are you staying, then?”

“That depends,” he said quietly.

“On what?” she asked her voice nearly a whisper.

“On whether or not you want me to stay,” he said. “I’d be working primarily with you.”

She met his eyes then and swallowed hard. “I want you to stay,” she said simply.

“It’s settled then. I’ll tell Ianto when he returns.” Tosh looked away, her eyes focusing on the food in front of her, but the smile playing at the corners of her mouth was a dead giveaway to anyone who knew her that she was immensely pleased at this turn of events.

At his urging, Suzie managed to haul herself over to the Doctor and he put both hands on her belly, focusing deeply with his tattered mind until he felt the minds of her unborn twins. He sensed no damage but he saw the same open pathways in their minds that Suzie had in hers. “They’re okay,” he said quickly to reassure her, “but they’re going to have your ability even without implants. You and Mickey and Jake are going to have to make sure you keep a tight rein on them until they’re old enough to develop a moral compass of their own. I think it’s going to be a very good thing that they have three parents to keep them in line.”

“I wanted to change things,” Suzie said looking down, ashamed of herself. “I could have changed everything for those people. Altered the course of so many human minds. The power, Doctor, I had so much power. It was overwhelming. I wanted it. I wanted to use it.”

“I know,” he said. “Almost lost you to it a couple of times. But we didn’t. Every time you came close, you let me pull you back. Me and Rose and the TARDIS.”

“A net made up of human minds is far different than a net made up of artificial ones. I felt…I don’t even like thinking it, but I felt like a goddess. Like I could do anything and no one could touch me, no one could stop me.”

“Well, you could have. But fortunately you listened to your anchor. It takes tremendous strength of will to let that type of power go once you’ve tasted it,” he told her.

“I don’t want to ever feel it again. It’s too much. I wish I could have the implant taken out, but if I do, they say my brain would return to how it was with the brain injury. I wouldn’t be me anymore,” she told him. “And these babies are going to need me.”

“More than you know. They’ll need someone who understands their ability intimately. Even if they can use it, they shouldn’t. Not until they’re grown and even then under strict supervision.” He yawned, exhaustion threatening to take him. Suzie slipped against him, her eyes closing and a quick brush across her temple told him she’d yielded to sleep.

The TARDIS flashed a warning light and began the materialization sequence. She landed gently, but he simply was too worn out to get up and exit the ship, despite what he knew awaited them on the other side of the doors. Instead his eyes fell shut and he, too, slept.

“Something’s wrong,” said Jake pacing in front of the TARDIS doors. “Why aren’t they coming out?” He knocked for a third time with the same lack of result. He rattled the door but it remained locked. “Rose has to have a key, doesn’t she?” Jake asked.

“Yeah, I’m sure she does,” Mickey replied.

“Do you know where she keeps it?” Jake demanded.

“Well, back before in the old universe, she wore it on a chain about her neck,” Mickey said. Jake didn’t wait for Mickey to go any further, instead racing to Rose’s side. The glitter of a silver chain glinted up from under her shirt. He slipped a finger under it, pulling it out. The clasp had slid around to the front, making it easy for him to unfasten it and slide it away from Rose. She didn’t stir.

With Rose’s key in hand, and Mickey close behind him, Jake entered the ship. Both men rushed to Suzie who lay unconscious against the Doctor’s side. “Suzie,” said Jake shaking her arm. “Suzie!”

“It’s all right,” said the Doctor in a strained voice. He didn’t open his eyes. “We’re both weak, but we’re okay. Just drained,” he tried to reassure them.

“And the babies?” asked Mickey almost as if he were afraid to even speak the words.

“They’re strong and healthy,” he said. “We’re going to need food and sleep and lots of it. Take Suzie to your rooms and get her settled and then if you can, get me into bed and please, please go and fetch Rose…?” He trailed off, the drain of speaking even too much for him now.

“Of course, we will,” said Mickey. Tenderly he lifted his wife into his arms and Jake went ahead and pulled back the covers, settling her into their bed.

“Let’s get the Doctor into bed and get Rose and then we can see about making them both something restorative to eat,” said Mickey.

“But I don’t want to leave her,” protested Jake.

“I know,” Mickey said, running his hand softly down Jake’s cheek. “But it’s as bad for him and Rose as it’s been for us without Suzie. Maybe worse with that sickness Rose had. The least we can do for him after looking after our girl is to bring him his.”

Jake nodded. “I know.” He laid a gentle kiss on Suzie’s cheek and stood up with a sigh. As quickly as they could they shifted the Doctor into his own bed, removing only his boots, and then Jake headed for the kitchen to heat up some soup while Mickey went to retrieve Rose.

It felt like hours, but the Doctor thought it could only be several minutes before he was finally placed into the bed and Rose was brought to him. The exhausted woman barely opened her eyes as she was set down beside him, but an explosion of golden sparks lit the entire bed the moment their hands touched. Mickey jumped back in surprise. “’S’okay,” said the Doctor tiredly. “’S’posed to happen.” The sparking was replaced by a bright, golden glow. Mickey pulled the blankets over them and then retreated, shutting the door behind him. Rose burrowed into the Doctor and arms wrapped around each other, they slept. They woke only long enough to each drink a mug of the restorative soup that Jake brought them before leaving the land of the conscious once again.

Several hours later Rose awoke on her back feeling slightly better, but still very tired. Her stomach growled ridiculously loudly and she needed desperately to pee. She wiggled her way out from underneath the Doctor by some miracle without waking him and hurried to the loo. Then on her way to the kitchen she paused at the door to Mickey, Jake, and Suzie’s suite.

“If I peek in on them I’m not going to see anything I don’t want to see, am I?” she asked the TARDIS.

“Define what you mean by what you don’t want to see,” replied the TARDIS.

“Anything like what you prefer not to watch the Doctor and I do in the console room,” she said.

“No, they are just sleeping, not copulating.”

Rose gently opened the door and looked inside. Mickey and Jake were both on their sides facing Suzie who was snuggled between them. Each man had an arm over Suzie, their hands resting on the other man’s upper arm. A soft snore issued from somebody. Reassured, Rose smiled and continued on to the kitchen where she made herself some more of the soup that Jake had made them earlier. She fed herself quickly, already feeling the loss of the Doctor from her side. She wondered if that was going to take a while to fade, or if it was simply because they hadn’t made love yet since getting back to each other.

She hurried back to her bedroom and debated whether or not she should wake up the Doctor while she changed out of her clothes and into a pair of pajama bottoms and a camisole top. Much more comfortable than she had been in her field clothes, she crawled back into bed and rolled over onto her side deciding that if he was still tired enough to be sleeping she should let him be. Sensing her return the Doctor snuggled up against her back and wrapped his arm around her, his hand going under her top to cradle her breast, before settling back into sleep. She was too tired to be anything but mildly disappointed that he was still too exhausted to make love. Really, she was too, despite the fact that her body was already preparing for his entry.

The next time she woke it was to a persistent tugging at her waist line. She opened her eyes long enough to figure out that her husband was clumsily trying to remove her pajama bottoms in his sleep. She had just enough energy to slip them down out of his way. He pushed down her knickers and then she felt his very erect penis up against her backside. She shifted her legs slightly. Slowly he pushed inside her, filling her deeply. His hand snaked back up under her shirt. After no further motion from him and the issuance of a soft snore, she realized he’d fallen back into a much deeper slumber. Well, it wasn’t the first time she’d slept joined together with him and it wouldn’t be the last. With a gigantic yawn she closed her eyes and did the same.

When Rose awakened for the last time it was to the gentle, yet insistent, shallow rocking of the Doctor inside her. He wasn’t at full size, she noted. Probably worried about hurting her after a few days apart. “Starting without me?” she asked mildly amused.

“Finally. Didn’t think you were ever going to wake up,” he complained.

“Me?” Rose snorted. “I’ve been up, checked on Suzie and the boys, ate another meal, changed my clothes, crawled back into bed, was pleasantly accosted in my—well, no, your sleep since I was awake at the time—and slept another few hours while you’ve been blissfully snoring away the entire time. Superior Time Lord biology my—ooooh.” Her teasing tirade broke off at his deep plunge into her body.

He chuckled. “So easily distractible.”

“It’s been forever,” she said pushing back hard to meet him on the next thrust.

“Three and a half days is hardly forever,” he told her. “Though it certainly felt like it.” He squeezed her breast, the nipple caught between the webbing of his first and second fingers. He moved them down a little and began to circle the areola lightly with the tip of the first.

“It was long enough that the Lurvins were feeling it,” she said waving one hand in the direction of their tank on the stand near her side of the bed. The little creatures looked dull and listless, but as the Doctor thrust into her a slight glow began to shine from the center of the circular animals.

“Looks like we’re making them happy now,” the Doctor said.

“Missed you,” she said. “So much.”

His hand slid down her body and into the front of her knickers, which unlike the back were still pretty much in place. His hand slipped inside, his ring finger easily gliding between the folds to seek out her clit. “Mmm, I can tell. You’re soaking.”

“Doctor?”

“Hmm?”

“Shut up and shag the hell out of me.” He chuckled again and pulled out of her.

“Hey, how’s that shagging the—?” She broke off as he rolled her over and promptly divested her of the remainder of her clothing. He stripped off his own just as quickly and then crawled back onto the bed between her spread legs, a wicked grin on his face. He rested lightly against her body but didn’t enter her. She pouted and he grinned at her, laughing as she bucked impatiently upward.

She reached her hand between them wrapping it around the first several inches of his shaft. “It’s been too long for you to tease me,” she said in determination. “In fact, no teasing for a week.” He shuddered at her touch, his eyes closing tightly as she guided him back inside her.

“No more teasing,” he agreed, “but I do want to kiss you.”

He dipped his head down and found her lips yielding and open to him. He entered her mouth with eagerness, and she let herself get lost in the sensations he created within her as his tongue danced in circles around her own. She offered only token resistance for dominance of the kiss before being overwhelmed with his drive to explore every nook and cranny as if relearning her mouth for the very first time. The kiss was almost frenzied and it made her feel like she was getting lost, subsumed by the force of his need.

It felt like he kissed her for hours, the strong powerful strokes eventually fading down to soft and tender glides of tongue against tongue. One hand buried itself in his hair and the unromantic thought that he’d really be needing a trim soon crossed her mind, but totally washed back out of her mind as his penis flexed inside of her. She squeezed down hard around him and was rewarded with a slightly garbled sound from his throat.

He broke the kiss after that and she smiled up at him and raised her hands to the wrought iron headboard, her fingers wrapping tightly around them as she braced herself, and not a moment too soon. The Doctor’s first thrust was at full strength and she had to push herself back down the bed a few inches to meet his next one. He still wasn’t expanded to full size, but it was probably a good thing with the heavy, pounding rhythm that he set up. She opened her legs further, adjusting them so he could slip a little more deeply into her body. She didn’t dare let go of the rails as his thrusts became stronger and stronger.

As he drove into her over and over again she felt the fast rise of orgasm on the horizon. She needed to come desperately. Even if it was cheating she didn’t care. They’d have plenty of time the next three rounds to do this the slow way. “It was cheating,” he said slightly put out despite the gloriousness of coming with the enhancement of the golden sparks. “It was a very naughty trick.”

“So spank me,” she said cheekily. The Doctor didn’t reply and she opened her eyes. “What?” she asked as he raised his eyebrows and looked at her with interest.

“I’m considering it,” he said with a smirk. She stuck out her tongue at him and raised her hips again, encouraging him to start up again. “Ah,” he said, “later then.” This time when he brought her to orgasm it was all on his own and nearly twice as satisfying for both of them.
