amberfocus...to make high speed internet run at the speed it is supposed to? So we have been playing this lovely game since moving here of getting decent high speed internet access. The first thing we did was get rid of the DSL that was here and replace it with cable internet, because the DSL line we were on also provided service to the elementary school two blocks away and the hospital two blocks the other way, and it was slooooooooooooooooooooow.
We had Comcast at the old place and we were happy with it. I could download 175 KB in 3 minutes and 360 in a bit over six. And that was at the lowest tier of 12. We decided to bump up one to the tier of 16 (I know it's got something that comes after the 12 and the 16, it has to do with speed but I don't remember what it was called), because it was faster.
So for two days we had this really zipping internet access. Then it spluttered down to slower than what the DSL had been (which was 20 minutes to download 175 KB and one hour and 30 minutes or more to download 360 KB) which was absolutely ridiculous. I couldn't even get LJ to load in less than 30 seconds, FB took a whole minute, and the virtual school we do our homeschooling through took about 3 minutes to load it's main page after signing on. So frustrating. Might have well have been on bloody dial up with a 56K modem.
So anyway, they were supposed to come out some time between 2 and 6 today, (such a lovely time window). They hadn't shown up by five so I took off to go to the chiropractor. Mom was here with Rose and Tobias who are both sick. Rose is really, really sick. T's sick but on his way back up. Anyway, I get back 20 minutes later to three Comcast vans in the driveway (I knew if I left they would come) and I have to go park at the neighbor's because of course they are completely blocking the whole thing. This is a driveway that can easily accommodate ten vehicles and if they'd parked 1, 2, 3 I could have pulled in, but no....
It took them an hour to figure things out. And I say figure things out, but I mean cross things off the list. It wasn't the router. They replaced the modem, and they think that there might be something with the line that comes into the house, so they are coming back on Saturday to replace all of that cabling. I think it's actually running faster just with replacing the modem, but until I try downloading something I won't know for sure. But internet pages are loading somewhere between instantly and 2 seconds now.

They're going to roll out "optical to the house" everywhere - apparently we're talking rates where you can expect to download a movie in 2 or 3 seconds. No idea how long it's going to be before it happens though. They haven't even got to the stage of tendering yet.
