Warnings: In this story Rose will be having flashbacks to a violent incident where she was beaten by a prison guard and hurt by another man. This is not rape fic and will not touch on that issue at all. I will keep the explicitness to a minimum, but I know this sort of thing can trigger memories in the victims of violence so wanted to post fair warning.
Summary: Rose has lost her equilibrium after a terrible experience and being back on a similar planet is not helping. The Doctor isn't quite sure what to do to rebuild her spirit, but he has to try because losing her is not an option. Neither is letting her go home.
Author's Notes: This fic was written for Wiggiemomsi who won me and 15,000 words in the Support Stacie Auction.

Additional Author's Notes: I wasn't going to post this until tomorrow, but the rest of the fic is coming along so well, I thought I'd go ahead and do it today. Merrick tries to take advantage of Rose and she finds her fighting spirit and stands up for herself against his intimidation. The scenario in this chapter may trigger victims of abuse. This is your warning.
Chapter Four: Evasion of Accusations
Jack Harkness had fallen asleep the moment he’d crashed on the most comfortable primitive bed he’d been on in ages and had slept for a good eight hours. He’d eaten some bread and cheese before crawling back under the covers until dawn came. For now he lay in the dark, a beam of moonlight bathing one corner of his bed in its light. He hated being awake with his thoughts, especially right now.
He wasn’t happy here, hadn’t been happy for the last few weeks, truth be told. Rose had been broken and he couldn’t help feeling that he was partially to blame for it. The Doctor had told him to keep an eye on the girl, but he’d allowed himself to get distracted by a handsome man and the next thing he’d known Rose was being taken into custody and shipped off to prison for sedition. No honest trial, no judge, only a council of dangerous old men with a lust for violence against women.
It had taken them a week to find which camp Rose’d been confined to and he’d never forgotten the way she looked when they’d found her in the medical wing, cut, viciously bruised and battered, with dried blood smeared across her neck and chest and a fresh, ugly burn scarring her throat. It would stay with him forever. She’d been nearly unconscious, half out of her mind, and in so much pain it hurt to look at her.
The Doctor had carried her out of the facility while Jack served as body guard, fighting when needed with a gun nearly as big as his thigh clutched tightly in his hands. The Doctor had not said one word to him about the evil of such weapons and he’d mostly used it as a bludgeon anyway. The Doctor had had darker ideas. In fact when they’d gone back after Rose was in an enforced healing sleep he’d had to talk the Doctor down from using the weapon against the prison guard population. He had never in his life seen anyone hold so much fury in them as the Doctor did that day.
A high-pitched scream, one that he recognized quite clearly as Rose’s, echoed from across the hall and he was instantly on his feet, out of his bed, and pounding on the Doctor and Rose’s door when the knob refused to budge. “Rose, you okay?” he hollered. He glanced down the stairs and saw lights coming on from the first floor. “Rose? Doctor?”
It took a moment before the door was opened and a shattered looking Doctor appeared. “She’s fine,” he said abruptly. “Nightmare.”
“Can I see her?” he asked.
The Doctor eyed him a moment before he said. “You might want to put some clothes on first.”
Jack glanced down at his body, realized he was naked, and dashed back to his room to throw on his jeans. He hurried back to the Doctor and Rose and the Doctor let him pass. Heavy footsteps on the stairs made Jack pause only for a moment before he swooped down on Rose who was sitting on the edge of the bed crying. He pulled her into his arms and she immediately sagged against him.
He heard Merrick’s voice from the hallway. “What is going on here?” the man demanded trying to look into the room over the Doctor’s shoulder. “You are disturbing the sleep of the entire house.”
“My wife had a nightmare,” the Doctor said flatly moving so that he blocked the man’s seeking eyes.
“Is she all right?” he asked with false concern.
From the bed Jack said, “She’s fine.”
On hearing Jack’s voice Merrick shoved his way into the room. “This is not allowed,” he said sternly. “Why is your wife in the arms of a half naked man?”
“He’s comforting her,” the Doctor snapped.
“We do not allow this sort of comfort on this planet. Women are only allowed one husband here,” the man snarled.
“I’m not her husband,” Jack protested.
Merrick’s lip curled in disgust. “Then this is an offense punishable by flogging. Bring the girl before us at dawn for her harlotry.”
“Like hell I will,” the Doctor said angrily as Rose cringed into Jack’s body. Jack’s arms tightened protectively around her.
“I’m her brother,” Jack said thinking quickly. “And I claim insult at your insinuation.”
“A likely story,” Merrick said. “Do you think me stupid?”
“I think your entire planet is stupid,” the Doctor said.
“Either way you will follow our law and present her for punishment or you will all be punished for this crime.” He smiled almost conspiratorially then. “Come now, it’s a simple flogging. She’ll recover. My wife says she doesn’t even feel them anymore after the fifth stroke. Why should the two of you have to suffer for her deviant tendencies that lured you to this behavior?”
“I don’t have deviant tendencies, you pervert.” Rose snapped.
“Hush, woman. You will be whipped.” He eyed her speculatively. “Unless you care to put that pretty mouth to better use. Then I think something might be arranged to clear your name.” He adjusted himself in his pajama pants, making it crystal clear precisely what he meant.
“You’ve been after me since we met you,” Rose ground out. “And if you think I’m giving you a blow job, you dirty old bastard, then you have another think coming!”
“You think I’m going to let you touch my wife? You think that someone as filthy as you even deserves to be in her presence? I hate men like you. Bullies who use their authority to force themselves on innocent women. She will not submit to the likes of you,” the Doctor said angrily.
“Too bad. I was curious to see how the sharpness of her tongue felt against my--.”
Jack had had it. He leapt from the bed and barreled past the Doctor, his fist slamming into Merrick’s face. He felt the man’s nose give a satisfying crunch underneath his hand and blood gushed from the injury. The man let out a howl.
“We need to leave, now,” the Doctor said. “I’ll hold him off, you get dressed.” The Doctor backed Merrick against the wall, his arm against the man’s throat to prevent him from moving.
Jack shoved past them and retrieved the rest of his clothes. When he returned Rose was still wearing the shift but had pulled on her jeans and trainers. He took over keeping Merrick at bay while the Doctor dressed, then managed to subdue Merrick long enough to pinch a nerve on his neck that rendered him temporarily paralyzed. He could still breathe, in fact could still wail out his indignation at such treatment against his hospitality and they could hear more noise from down below.
“He’s paralyzed, yeah?” Rose asked.
“Yeah, for a few minutes anyway,” the Doctor said.
“Can he still feel pain?” she demanded.
“Yeah.”
“Good.” Rose walked over to the man and kicked him fiercely in the groin. “That’s what I think of the laws on your planet.” She placed a second, harder kick for good measure. "And that's my opinion of you, personally."
Jack nearly cheered. Rose had found her fighting spirit again and it was a joy to witness. They legged it out a window and onto the roof of the porch below. “The minute you get down take her and go,” the Doctor ordered. Quickly they made their way to the ground and finding Rose’s hand in the dark Jack tugged her ahead with him while the Doctor covered their retreat. They’d covered a mile before the Doctor caught up with them.
“They following us?” Jack asked.
“Not anymore,” the Doctor said grimly. “How you doing, Rose?”
“I’m fine.” Her voice sounded like she meant it. Standing up for herself again had made a huge difference in her demeanor.
“You good to keep moving? I’d like to put as much distance between us and this city as possible. I think it’s another four miles to the TARDIS from here. Think you can make it without resting?” he asked.
“Think so,” she said. She glanced up at the sky where the edges of dawn were just beginning to show on the horizon. “I think I slept at least six hours.”
“We better hurry. Don’t want to think what might happen if they see Rose out and about in her scandalous attire,” Jack said with a bitter note in his voice.
The Doctor held out his hand to Rose and Jack automatically relinquished his grip on the girl. “I’ll cover the rear,” he told them.
“Just so long as you’re not staring at it,” the Doctor said. That’s when Jack knew they were safe. If the Doctor could make a quip like that they must really be out of immediate danger.
“Spoil all my fun,” he pouted. The Doctor gave him a mock glare and Rose smiled at him with the first sparkle he had seen in her eyes since before Drifalia.
“Let’s go.” As they moved out, he tried not to notice how much he missed holding Rose’s hand.
When they’d reached the TARDIS Rose had gone off to shower and try to get some more sleep. Jack had stayed in the console room while the Doctor did his calculations and then helped the Doctor pilot the ship into the Vortex. “She stood up for herself tonight,” he offered carefully.
The Doctor glanced up briefly with a smile. “That she did. More than once.”
“Mmm?” Jack encouraged, trying to get the Doctor to open up a bit more without appearing like that was what he was doing.
His hands moved over the glass orbs on the console then he moved to the keyboard and typed something in. “Yeah. She didn’t like something I said to her and she pelted me with fruit.”
Jack smiled. “That’s good to hear.”
The Doctor pretended to sulk. “Vicious right arm she’s got.”
“Do you think she’s moving past…everything?” he asked the Doctor.
“I’m hopeful. She wouldn’t let herself be a victim today. That’s important to her recovery.” He moved around the console and kept glancing over at Jack as he adjusted the flight controls.
“Did you want to ask me something, Doctor?”
“Does Rose…?” He stopped and looked away.
“Does Rose what?” he asked quietly.
“Never mind.” He pulled off a piece of the console and shone the light from his sonic screwdriver down inside. “Looks like the spindle assembly needs cleaning and rebalancing.”
“Want me to help?” Jack asked.
“Nah. It’s a one man job, but if you want to work on tightening up the gravitational stabilizers they could use it,” he allowed.
Jack retrieved his tools from under the grating trying to figure out how to get the Doctor to open up. He’d been holding in his emotions ever since they’d rescued Rose from Drifalia and even if the man wasn’t a human, it couldn’t be good to keep all his feelings over what had happened bottled up like this.
“About Rose,” Jack began.
“Do you think she’s attracted to me?” the Doctor blurted out.
“What?”
“Nothing. Never mind,” the Doctor said. Jack tried to hide a grin. The Doctor’s ears were turning pink. He had wondered if the man’s resolve to keep his hands off Rose was ever going to crack.
Jack didn’t say anything as he started tightening up the bolts around the stabilizer, his fingers intent on keeping the thick rubber hose from slipping off the manifold as he did so. “It’s just that she said something…”
“Yeah?” he replied with seeming disinterest.
“I told her she had nothing to worry about with us sharing a bed, that I’d be a perfect gentlemen with her, and she told me that she was perfectly well aware of that.” If the Doctor had been the sort to bite his lip or shift nervously from foot to foot he’d be doing it now. Jack stifled another grin at the man’s uneasiness over talking about something that obviously made him uncomfortable.
“Did she?”
“And it sort of sounded like she was unhappy at the prospect,” he continued. “So I was just wondering if you think that Rose likes me.”
“Doubt she’d be travelling with you if she didn’t hold some level of affection for you,” Jack teased pretending to be oblivious to the question’s intent.
“I mean…romantically.” Jack forced down another smirk at the Doctor’s awkwardness.
“No,” he said. “I don’t think she likes you, Doc.” The man looked crestfallen and Jack couldn’t continue the ruse any longer. “I think she’s in love with you.”
