apurplepatch's link is a good one but I think most people over here would know Roman Abramovich (#2) rather than Lakshmi Mittal (#1)

Abramovich owns one of the top football (soccer) clubs in Britain, Chelsea and it's a big talking point over here mainly because he's Russian and super rich (gas and oil I think) and football is a cult of celebrity here in the UK.

I think the richest person in the UK is actually JK Rowling, but she isn't a business person like Gates. She just made a mint having all of us buy her books and watch the movies.
