Character Meme
Jun. 24th, 2009 11:11 pmOkay, I think I did this meme about a year ago, but I've written a lot more stuff since then, so I thought I'd give it a whirl now that I've got a bit of time. And because I no longer have writer's block and will need to break up the massive amounts of writing I will be doing in the next four days with something lighter. So anyway, the meme:
Pick a character that I have written, or that you know I have substantial headcanon about, and ask any five questions about him/her. Be sure to specify whether you would like responses to be OOC (responding as the writer) or IC (responding as the character).

Date: 2009-06-25 07:59 am (UTC)1) I know that you're happy for Jonathan, but do he and Rose sort of make you sick with the lovey-dovey?
2) I'm sure James has impeccable taste, but he's still a bachelor. What's the number one thing about his home that you can't wait to change?
3) I know that Rose is a bit younger than you, but have you two ever had a girls night to gossip about James and Jonathan?
4) Do you ever wonder what Jonathan and Rose are up to when they're in the office with the door shut?
5) What's your favorite thing to tease Jonathan about, besides Rose?

Date: 2009-06-25 08:27 am (UTC)Are you kidding me? These two are better than a soap opera. Space man was the loneliest person I've ever met and then Rose came along and he just...she swept him off his feet and it's been quite the entertaining fall. He's so much fun to tease about her. And Rose, I simply adore that girl. I don't even have the words. I couldn't be any happier for them. So maybe, yeah, to people on the outside they might be a bit...much, but I looked at them and I wanted that. It's why I took a chance with James. I wanted that.
2) I'm sure James has impeccable taste, but he's still a bachelor. What's the number one thing about his home that you can't wait to change?
I haven't spent much time there, to be honest. He has his flat in the complex and then he comes to my place a lot, but his actual house is outside the city and I've only been there twice. It's pretty austere, definitely needs more of a woman's touch, but I think it'd be more adding things in than taking anything away. But honestly, if I could change one thing? It's silly and stupid and only important if you're woman. It's that damn toilet seat. Apparently even alien male bachelors leave it up.
3) I know that Rose is a bit younger than you, but have you two ever had a girls night to gossip about James and Jonathan?
Rose is a complete kindred spirit and I'm looking forward to spending much more time with her in the future now that her nose isn't in the school books all the time. We've had only two outings together, but much flew in the way of gossip all right. I had ammunation against Jonathon for weeks after our first day out together. She was a bit more circumspect this last time, but for someone who comes off rather prudish, apparently her Jonathon is quite the tiger in the bedroom, on the balcony, once in a Paris park. *shakes head* Though I should talk. Moon voyeurs have been watching us...
4) Do you ever wonder what Jonathan and Rose are up to when they're in the office with the door shut?
Wonder? I don't have to wonder. Neither one of them is exactly quiet. Those two can't keep their hands off each other and one time Rose sat, I'm assuing it was Rose, on the intercom. Dr. Beckett just about had a coronary when he walked by until I covered and said I was streaming a show on the net during my lunch break and would put the headphones in. I think he fell for it.
5) What's your favorite thing to tease Jonathan about, besides Rose?
Besides Rose? Tie my hands, why don't you? Sex, I suppose. Though that really leads back to Rose again, doesn't it? But really, he gets so embarrassed about it. His ears turn pink and he sort of splutters all indignantly and pulls at the back of his neck. It's the most adorable thing ever.

Date: 2009-06-25 09:09 pm (UTC)Jonathon is a good man and that's really all that matters. But I suppose you want a better answer than that. I've had my suspicions for a long time about him. He was brought to my attention far later than anyone ever should have been with his particular abilities in the different sciences. You have to understand that that doesn't happen. I've got feelers out all around the world and I know things. But...he's perfectly human. Too perfect, actually. His physical scan shows a perfectly functioning human body. And I do mean perfectly. None of the damage that a man of his age should have, no signs of antibodies or past illnesses. No scars. And there is no junk DNA in his cells. Newborns aren't this healthy.
2. How was it for you on the moon?
Beautiful view of the Earth from the moon. Oh, you wanted to know about...? Sorry. A man like me doesn't kiss or do anything else with a woman like Donna and tell. I've got too much respect for her. And I love her more than it should be possible to love someone. But that light show? With my people, it normally only lasts an hour. Read into that what you will.
3. Have you left Donna something to remind her of you?
Yes.
4. Could you have had children?
Yes. My human form was perfectly capable of fathering a child.
5. Who are you...really?
On this planet I am James Lumin, but I was born Jehemesor out of Soriala and Jehamni Lureshont of the Destornau Leukosians. Leukos is a planet in constellation of Kasterborrus. We are a people of light and energy who can shift to the form of matter with ease. We live on eight levels of the twenty-seven known dimensions. We are generally a peaceful people but there are times when we will defend ourselves. Sometimes that defense comes too late and that is why I was the last of my kind.

1) How different do you think your life would be if you hadn't moved to London?
2) Is there anywhere else that you'd really like to take Rose?
3) Do you really mind Donna teasing you about Rose and things?
4) Have you ever had a proper conversation with Jackie? What do you think she'll be like as a mother-in-law?
5) Have you been enjoying the light shows recently?

Date: 2009-06-25 09:31 pm (UTC)That's not something I particularly want to think about. If I hadn't come here I wouldn't have met Rose and Rose is...everything. A life without her...it would have been empty and lonely and celibate. Like the previous ten years of my life. And I wouldn't have found a best friend in Donna or a thoroughly fulfilling job like I have at Illuminate. And Lumin... *looks away* Sorry, I can't talk about him yet.
2) Is there anywhere else that you'd really like to take Rose?
Well, I wanted to take her on the kitchen counter of her old flat, but she wouldn't let me. And I've got this idea for going up in an airplane and--oh. On vacation. Sorry, I thought you meant... Bit of a one track mind there, sometimes. Yes, of course there are places I'd like to take Rose. Greece, for starters. Spain. Particularly Barcelona, though I've no idea why. I've never been there. New Zealand and Australia. Brazil. New York. Oh, lots of places. And anywhere she wants to go.
3) Do you really mind Donna teasing you about Rose and things?
It's worth putting up with the teasing. Donna is a brilliant woman and she keeps me on my toes and honestly, I adore her. I never had that kind of relationship with my siblings, they were both so much younger than me when they died and I never got to know them as adults. Donna has become a surrogate sister in many ways. So even though it's embarrassing, I wouldn't change it for the world.
4) Have you ever had a proper conversation with Jackie? What do you think she'll be like as a mother-in-law?
No, I haven't really. We're planning a get to know you dinner for her and Howard when they get back from their honeymoon. We seem to get along just fine, though, so I can't imagine any of that changing when Rose and I get married. Why? Is there something I should be worried about?
5) Have you been enjoying the light shows recently?
Sort of. I mean, on a basic level, of course. They're pretty and Rose likes to get all snuggly and watch them together and what's not to like about that? But...as someone with a doctorate in astronomy...well, the moon just doesn't behave like that. The amount of power being generated in that light show is enormous. That doesn't just occur naturally. Something is going on. And after the incidents with the Caligo, I hope it's nothing that will put the residents of this planet at risk.

Date: 2009-06-26 05:57 am (UTC)1) What was Rose like as a teenager?
Probably from the time she was fifteen she was incredibly driven. I think she gets that from her father because I certainly was not. I was happy to do enough to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. But Rose, she wanted something better. Not just for herself, but for both of us. She went to work as soon as she was old enough to help out and she took the most advanced courses she could. When she won that scholarship for Uni it was the proudest moment of my life. Other than the day she was born, of course.
(2) What kind of life do you want for her?
As long as she's happy, I'm happy. Success and all that is great but it means nothing if she's not got love and she's not happy. She's well on her way to the life she always wanted. She's well educated, has a great job, and that man she's been seeing...he's a doctor and he's mad about her. I don't think I'll ever have to worry about her. If the time comes when she can't take care of herself, I have every confidence that he will...if she'll let him. You know how Rose can be.
(3) What do you think about the age difference between Jonathon and Rose?
I'm hardly one to judge, am I? Howard's got a decade on me and we get on just fine. And honestly, I don't think a boy Rose's own age would have the maturity to deal with her quirks and issues or her intimidating level of intelligence. It takes a patient, secure, loving man to do that and from everything I've seen, she's found that with Jonathon. Age is an arbitrary number. It's not like she's twelve and he's 24. They're both fully grown adults.
(4) What do you think of how serious their relationship has gotten so quickly?
It doesn't surprise me. I've always said to Howard that if Rose were ever to find the right man and let her control slip even for a moment, she'd fall so hard and so fast there'd be no stopping it. I'm actually surprised she's been as sensible as she has. She told me Jonathon asked her to move in. I'm surprised she said no, but I think it was good for her to take this time and live on her own paycheck for a while. He's a good man, he's good to her, and he's never done a thing so far to hurt her. I don't feel the need to worry about it unless he does.
(5) Based on your experiences with Pete and Howard, what advice would you give Rose about love?
When you find it, hold onto it tightly with both hands because it can be taking away from you in a heartbeat. And don't listen to what anyone says about the age difference, either. Or the difference in income. People can be cruel if they think you're only in the relationship for the money. Howard's got a sister that I'd have liked to give the patented Tyler slap to on more than one occasion for such comments, but Howard and I know the truth of it and that's all that matters.

Date: 2009-06-27 03:32 am (UTC)A planet in the constellation your people call Kasterborrus. It's in the same solar system that the man you knew as James Lumin was from. It's the second planet from our star, whereas Luekos is the fifth. We didn't have a name for it. Naming things is a rather alien concept to us. We simply refer to it as place of origin and have a concept of it's position in the universe around us. We didn't name each other, either. As a telepathic race we simply knew who we were communicating with. But I've accepted the name Caelum for use here on Earth.
2. Tell me more about your species.
We don't have a language of our own. We communicate in thoughts, images, concepts that are related directly mind to mind in a sort of musical, harmonic mishmash of sounds. I can communicate with humans, can speak in their language directly into their minds, if necessary. I don't like to do that, though. Their minds are small and my thoughts are large. It is...limiting. We like drifting on the solar winds of our star. It is how we play. We move through space by concentrating on the position in the universe of the place we want to go to. We have two ways of reproducing. The females can make seeds and be pollinated by the males or we can reproduce asexually, breaking off a portion of ourselves and it will grow to maturity, but that happens generally only when we are very old and have never reproduced. It is not precisely the same thing you refer to as cloning as we use inactive parts of our current DNA matrix crystal to prevent direct duplication. The new child is unique, can even be a female from a male or vice versa.
3. You've become a surrogate father to the little girl. How is she different or the same as your species?
*chokes* Father? I am not taking on the role of surrogate father here. Teacher maybe, but...you have to understand, that even if she is far too young now, one day she'll be grown and she's all I will have. Thinking of her as my child now would make it feel wrong when the time comes for...species propogation, if she chooses to accept me as a pollinator.
She is different from me but we are genetically compatible enough to carry on the species. She has strands in her DNA that are different from mine. I don't quite understand them or what they are for. They branch off the ability to move through space and seem to be related to it, but it is beyond my ken.
4. How long lived are your kind?
Average lifespan is 10,000 years, but my line tended to live longer than that. My father was 14,096 when he died and he sacrificed. He might have lived longer. My mother was nearly 12,000 when she died. Full adulthood is achieved at around 2000 years, though we can reproduce at 1500. It was frowned upon though, as we weren't fully mature. It would be equivalent on earth to a thirteen or fourteen year old child making a baby.
5. You gave the little one the rudiments of how to teleport. Is there anything else that you've taught her?
I've told stories of my planet, of my family, of my history, and my life. What else would I teach her besides teleportation? What else is there? Do you know something? Something about the strange strands in her DNA? Of why she's like me, but not?

Date: 2009-06-27 11:13 pm (UTC)I imagine that the little one will have quite a "crush" on him when she is older. Again, a silly human word that I am sure is woefully inadequate.
As Michael Smith in "Stranger in a Strange Land" would have said, please forgive me, I am but an egg.
I think of that phrase often lately.
