Chapter Fifteen: Redecorating
The Doctor had disappeared into the kitchen for a while and came back with a picnic hamper and a tablecloth. “I extended the force field a bit so we can eat just outside the doors.”
As they stepped out into the icy rings the sense of wonder that travelling with the Doctor had always given her arrived full force. Rose felt an ache in her chest at how much she had missed that feeling. She watched him whip out the tablecloth and set down the hamper on top of it. They sat down on the cloth and he unpacked the hamper.
As they ate, they caught up on the last few years of their lives. When she told him she’d gone back to school and gotten her A-levels with the top marks in her class he beamed at her with pride. “I always told you that you had a very good brain.”
“Yes, you did. Your faith in me gave me the courage, you know. It wasn’t easy being older than most of my classmates. If it hadn’t been for Nick Daniels, I’m not sure I would have made it through with such high marks.”
“Nick?” the Doctor tried not to tense up at the name.
“Mate of mine. Good friend. He was my study partner.”
“Just your study partner?” the Doctor asked.
Rose looked at him confused. “Of course, just my study partner. Well, and good friend, as I said.”
“You’re sure?”
“Is this you being jealous?” she asked. “Because there’s really no need. Nick’s gay.”
The relief that washed over the Doctor’s face was comical and she laughed. “I didn’t date anyone at all. There could never be anyone else but you for me,” she said. “I hope you know that.”
“It’s good to hear.”
“What about you? Did you ever find someone? One of your companions, maybe?” Rose asked, curious.
“No. Martha was just a good friend and Donna, well, if you’d met her you wouldn’t be asking that question. She might have fancied the last me, but she thinks I'm just a skinny piece of nothing Martian boy, if I recall correctly what she said the last time someone insulted her by thinking we were a couple. And besides that, my hearts would never be able to take loving Donna like that. No, Rose. There could never be anyone else for me but you.”
When they finally finished their picnic among the shimmering rings they went back inside and shut the TARDIS doors. Rose gave an enormous yawn. “I am so tired.” She glanced at her watch. “I think I’ve been up twenty hours straight. Is my room still my room?”
“It’s how you left it. I didn’t touch it.” He walked with her along the corridor and stopped in front of the door to her room. She reached out to open it but it didn’t move.
“It’s stuck,” Rose said.
The Doctor tried the handle, jiggling it hard. “It shouldn’t be sticking. There’s no lock.” He pulled the sonic screwdriver out of his pocket and aimed it at the door knob, then tried again. He was unsuccessful. “Well, I guess you can sleep in Martha’s room or Donna’s room tonight,” he said. “Tomorrow I’ll take a poke in the circuitry. There’s probably a fault somewhere.”
They continued down the hallway. “Now that’s just ridiculous,” said the Doctor as he was met with blank walls where the doors to his companions’ rooms should have been. A little further on they came to the door to the Doctor’s room and again the door was stuck. “Or maybe I’ll have to poke around the circuitry tonight,” he said.
“Doctor, what is that?” Rose asked pointing just a little further down the hall to a brilliant blue flash of color.
“I don’t know. Never seen it before.” He took Rose’s hand as they headed towards the unfamiliar doorway. It was draped with indigo silk. As they passed through the entrance Rose let out a startled gasp. The room was decorated in metallic silver, black and indigo. Everywhere she looked she saw silk. The walls were draped with it. But mostly where she looked was the center of the room.
The largest bed she had ever seen was the focal point. The frame looked like wrought iron filigree that had been painted silver. On the bed was a gorgeous indigo coverlet, the pillows were encased in black and indigo silk, and the sheer number of them, she counted ten, amazed her.
They took a couple of steps into the room and the lights dimmed. Suddenly little bits of light hit the walls, revolving like a disco ball, but slightly less tacky. Then the music started. Barry White.
“Doctor?” Rose queried. She turned to look at him. She had never seen him blush before, hadn’t even been aware that he could blush.
“Erm…I didn’t have anything to do with this, Rose,” he said. “I think the TARDIS has been redecorating.” He swallowed nervously.
“And playing matchmaker into the bargain?” she asked with a grin, glancing up at the lights. He nodded.
“Well, the bed’s certainly big enough to share,” said the Doctor. “And we could put some of those pillows down the middle.”
“Why?” Rose wanted to know.
“It’s been three years for you Rose and two for me. I don’t want to assume anything, here. I don’t want to rush you into anything. We need to get to know each other again.”
“You don’t want to be with me?” Rose asked trying not to feel hurt.
“I do want to. You have no idea, but I meant what I said, Rose. I love you. And I think we should take our time, get back to where we were--.”
“Where we were before we lost each other? We were in a holding pattern, Doctor, neither of us willing to admit what we felt to the other, in case those feelings weren’t returned. We wasted so much time. I don’t want to waste anymore.”
“I need you to be sure, Rose. Once we cross that line there’s no going back. I don’t ever want to hurt you,” he said. He was trying very hard not to sound as scared as he was. “I want it to be perfect when it happens.”
Rose yawned again. “All right,” she said accepting this because she was exhausted. “That’s fine. But no pillows between us. I want you beside me. That’s where you belong.”
“Always,” he said. “Let’s see what kind of night clothes she left us.” He wandered over to the bureau and opened one of the drawers. He jumped back as if he’d been bit. “Knock it off,” he told the TARDIS.
Rose came over to see what had startled the Doctor. “I think she’s trying to tell us something,” Rose said laughing at the very skimpy piece of lingerie the Doctor held up.
"I don't think this would even cover the private bits of you completely," he grumbled though his eyes seemed to be comtemplating what she'd look like in it. He looked back in the drawer and backed away as if stung. Rose peeked inside and saw the tiny pair of masculine briefs.
"Are...are those leather? she asked and the Doctor blushed and nodded. Rose put her hand on the wall and spoke to the air. “When we’re ready, okay? Now put something a little more suitable in one of the drawers.”
The TARDIS made a noise that almost sounded like a raspberry, but when they opened the next drawer they saw black silk pajamas and a sleeveless, floor-length silk indigo night gown. It was still quite sexy, but nowhere near what had been in the top drawer. For starters it had ten times the fabric.
When Rose emerged from the washroom a few minutes later wearing the gorgeous gown the Doctor swallowed audibly. “You are so beautiful,” he told her.
She looked him up and down. “And you,” she said, “Are the handsomest Time Lord in the universe.”
He smiled at her then blinked. “Hey, wait a minute,” he said. “I’m the only Time Lord in the universe.”
“Fine, then,” she laughed. “You’re the sexiest, hottest, handsomest man I’ve ever laid eyes on. Better?”
She sat down on the bed and slid under the covers. The Doctor went around to his side and slipped underneath. As they made their way towards each other Rose grumbled, “This is like a freaking slip and slide.”
“I’ll request cotton sheets for…erm, later,” the Doctor said.
“Might make things easier,” said Rose. She snuggled up against him and he put his arm around her. She yawned. “I love you so much, Doctor.”
He kissed the top of her hair. “I love you, too, Rose.”
One minute later she was asleep.
