Chapter Six:  Not Just Dreams

“There are pieces, so many pieces to the puzzle, Rose. But I left it there for you to find, oh, such a long time ago. It’s almost time. And when it comes all you have to do is Remember Us, our place in time. What we were. What we are. What we will be. It’s not a dream. Keep your eyes open and believe. And trust him. That’s key. And speaking of keys, do you still have it?”

Rose came awake with so much adrenalin pumping in her body that she fell off the bunk before she got her bearings. Her heart was beating a mile a minute and she knew that something monumental had just happened, beyond that she had dreamed of him. “Doctor,” she whispered.

It wasn’t the first time she’d dreamed of the Doctor in the intervening years between now and then. But it was the most vivid she’d had since he’d sent her off to Norway to say good-bye to him. And as then, she felt this was real. No irrelevant fancy, no fears being worked out in her subconscious. This was real.

She scrambled to her feet, pulling her night shirt back down to mid-thigh and stumbling out into the work space. She went unerringly to the top drawer of her desk and pulled it out. Reaching in the back she pulled out the chain with the TARDIS key on it. It seemed brighter than normal and when her hand shut tight around it, while it wasn’t warm, she heard singing. Bad Wolf singing. The song of the TARDIS. Almost.

She puzzled over it a bit as she hung the chain back around her neck. As it fell into place above her heart, she felt a quiet peace come over her that she had not known in five years. She had heard from the Doctor and she knew with no doubt in her mind that he was going to make things right. He would come for her. He hadn’t left her alone forever.

Rose glanced at the clock on the wall and decided to go ahead and get dressed and go up to the cafeteria for breakfast. Ian wasn’t due in for another hour.

******************************************

“This is what you are. This is why you are here. You’ve had so many questions for so long now and the answers have been mysteries. It wasn’t my place to tell you. Not yet. But it’s coming. It’s coming soon. Hold tight to your talisman and remember: It’s all about her. It’s all about Rose.”

It was Gran talking to him and he could see her as clearly as if she were standing next to him. And Rose was there, too. Albeit a very different Rose, awash in golden light, and full of music. And there had been a man there, hovering in the background, almost transparent. He had never seen this man before in his life, but yet he found him oddly familiar and somehow comforting. But the man himself was not important, he could have worn a different face and it wouldn't have mattered. No, it was what he did that mattered.

The man took Rose into his arms and kissed her and pulled the music and the golden light out of Rose’s body. Then he breathed out and the light went from him to something in the center of the room, something awake and alive and…timeless. Something right in a universe of things gone wrong.

Ian woke with a start, a cold sweat breaking out all over his body. His heart raced with a fear that did not seem to be his own, more the remembered fear of another person. He’d never dreamed like this before. He didn’t often dream and when he did, it was in colors and sounds, blurred images, not in pictures. Not in voices. Not like a movie.

He turned on his lamp and fumbled for his watch, checking the time. The alarm would be going off in ten minutes anyway, so he chose to get up and go eat something, then head into work to meet up with Rose for their flight to North Wales.

The meal sat heavily in his stomach on the long drive in. He didn’t have clue one what the dream meant but he knew it had to do with his past and Rose’s future. That much was clear. He’d have to call Gran when he got back from Dolwyddelan. No, he should go and see her. She would be more forthcoming in person. If nothing else, this dream had told him that Gran had some serious explaining to do.

I think I like reading this story more here at LJ than over at Teaspoon! Are you doing any rewriting of the chapters? I haven't been comparing them side by side, but will if you have been, just to see how they differ. :O)

So far I've only done minor things like correct grammatical errors, typos, and restructure a sentence or two. Nothing I'd think you'd really notice.
