It's regional. In the south, a sweet course after the meal is generally called a dessert. There are some desserts called puddings, such as rice pudding.
In the north, the sweet after meal course is called pudding - usually no matter what form it takes.
Unless, you are talking about a starter pudding - Yorkshire Pudding, or a main course pudding - suet pudding, steak and kidney pudding.
