Summary: An unexpected pregnancy causes huge emotional upset in the lives of the Doctor and Rose. With Jack the only voice of reason, will this child lead them to happily ever after or tear them apart forever?
Previous Chapters: http://amberfocus.livejournal.com/262898.html
By the time Rose had finished eating and washed up, Jackie had taken over and had bustled Rose into the chemise and the wide underskirt she would wear to hold up the wedding dress. Over this Rose wore a soft, silk, pale blue robe that the Doctor had purchased for her on one of his excursions with Jack earlier in the week when she’d complained the old one no longer fit. He’d told her she looked beautiful and had then heeded the shooing motion her mother had made and taken Jack to do whatever pre-wedding things men did, which Rose suspected was watching whatever match happened to be on the telly from the noises coming out of the other room.
Once alone, Jackie took the curlers out of Rose’s hair and her bright blonde tresses hung in very loose waves to the middle of her back. Jackie gathered back the part of her hair that normally framed her face and softly twisted one side and then the other, securing it at the back of Rose’s head with a pale silk band. She put a set of beautiful jeweled combs down on the table in front of Rose. Tiny blue and pink stones glimmered along the tops of the combs, the teeth pure ivory. Rose fingered them for a moment. “They belonged to your great, great grandmother Tyler,” Jackie said. “And if you ever have a little girl with that one,” she tilted her head towards the next room, “maybe she can wear them on her wedding day, too.”
Rose’s eyes filled with tears of emotion. “Don’t make me cry, Mum,” Rose said.
Jackie secured the combs in Rose’s hair, letting tiny ringlets escape the combs at cheekbone level. “We’ll still be able to secure the veil up here,” she said, touching the top center of her head, “without these getting in the way.”
Very carefully Jackie got out the makeup pallet the Doctor had had specially created from items that would not cause an allergic reaction if it were absorbed through Rose’s skin and into Charlie’s system. She began to dust her daughter’s face with a light powder and even out her skin tones until Rose looked more like a glowing bride and less like a woman in the final stages of a very difficult pregnancy.
“How are we getting to the church?” Rose asked. “The Doctor said we weren’t going by TARDIS, but he didn’t say how. Said that was your jurisdiction.”
“I’ve rented a couple of limousines for the day. They’ll take us to the church and then after the wedding, they’ll take us to the reception hall,” Jackie said.
“Wow. Never thought I’d ride to my wedding in something so fancy.”
“Says the girl who travels through space in a fancy time machine,” Jackie reminded her.
“The TARDIS isn’t fancy. She’s special and she’s home, but she’s not really fancy. More…lived in and comfortable.”
Jackie brushed a light layer of cream onto Rose’s eyelids to help the eye shadow adhere better then dusted the dusky rose shadow on over it. She put on a clean, clear mascara next that wouldn’t give Rose raccoon eyes if she started to cry. They’d foregone the eyeliner altogether. Her cheeks needed no help today with a natural blush in them that rivaled anything Jackie could have put on her.
“We’ll apply the actual lipstick right beforehand so here’s a bit of gloss to put on now.” She handed her daughter a tube. “I’ll go tell himself that we’re ready to leave for the church.”
“You’ve given up on all the traditions now, I take it?”
“No, you’ve got my combs in your hair, so they’re borrowed and old and they’ve got blue stones on them so that covers something blue. The Doctor’s got something new covered. And so far, at least, he hasn’t seen you in your actual wedding dress yet, which is at the church already. Shireen took it and your shoes over first thing this morning. You can finish changing there and maybe have one bit of good karma come out of it all.”
“How am I getting downstairs?” Rose asked as she heaved herself up and shoved her swollen feet into a delicate pair of slippers.
“The Doctor said if you can’t make it under your own power, he and Jack will carry you,” Jackie replied.
“Down all those stairs? Surely one brief hop in the ship wouldn’t be dangerous. He said we could travel from place to place, it was just time travel that needed to be avoided right now,” Rose said.
“She’s in a cantankerous mood this morning,” the Doctor said, overhearing her comment. “Mickey and I’ve spent the last hour setting up a live feed to the church so she can have the festivities beamed directly to her.” He looked Rose up and down. “You look beautiful, mother of my child, and beloved of my heart.” Rose beamed at him.
Jackie glared. “Well, you look a right mess. You were supposed to be getting ready. Go and hop in the shower. Quickly. Your tux is already at the church, so all we need is for you to look presentable. Go,” Jackie said pushing him with firm hands when he didn’t move fast enough for her liking.
She turned on Jack next who was, of course, impeccably groomed. “Well, at least I don’t have to worry about you,” she said. She paced until the Doctor emerged from the shower. He’d magically managed to get his hair shortened to slightly longer than it had been when they’d met. Rose suspected he’d soniced it into submission for there hadn’t been time for him to actually cut it and she hadn’t heard the clippers buzzing. He was clean shaven, having decided that sporting the scruffy look was one less thing for Jackie to upset Rose about.
The Doctor flung a shiny silver cape about Rose’s shoulders and made sure he had the bag with the dress Rose would change into after the reception. Rose managed to make it down one flight of stairs on her own before Jack and the Doctor had to help her the rest of the way. The four of them settled into the limo, the other one having been sent around thirty minutes earlier to pick up the rest of the wedding party.
Jackie’s phone rang and she had a brief conversation with the person on the other end before hanging up. “Keisha, Darren, Mickey and Shireen are already at the church,” Jackie said a slight note of exasperation directed at the Doctor. “And the florist is missing the two large arrangements that were supposed to go on either side of the altar.”
He didn’t reply to her, his focus on ensuring Rose’s comfort on the short ride. He half wished that he and Rose had the limo to themselves. Rose looked so tired. Her eyes had slipped shut. “Are you sure you’ll all right?” he murmured softly. “We can postpone this until after the baby is born.”
“No, it’s fine,” Rose said not bothering to open her eyes. She was half listening to Jack, who had taken Jackie’s mobile and called the florist, cajoling whomever had answered into locating the missing flowers. She smiled as he laid on the charm, hoping the recipient didn’t feel smothered in it.
Jack hung up, gave the phone back to Jackie, and said with a note of triumph, “She promises they’ll be there before the ceremony can start.”
“Now as long as the minister doesn’t get a flat on the way, we should be all set,” Jackie said.
“Why’d you have to go and say that for?” the Doctor asked. “That’s just asking for trouble, that is.”
Before Jackie could reply Rose let out a soft little whimper. “What is it?” the Doctor asked.
Rose shifted her position, leaning more against him. “Just my back. It’s aching.”
“Want me to do that thing?” he asked. She nodded and leaned forward and he pressed carefully on either side of her spine. She sighed in relief after a moment.
“I really don’t know how I’m going to stay on my feet all day,” she said.
“When we get to the church I can put in a block so you don’t feel it,” he said.
“Is that safe?”
“For a short period of time. Enough to get you through the ceremony and then you can sit for most of the reception,” he said.
“But I want to dance.”
“You can. A little. With me.”
“And me,” said Jack. At the Doctor’s look he added, “I get one song. And I’m sure Mickey will want one as well.”
“Not so sure about that,” said Jackie.
“Mickey and I have mended fences,” Rose said tiredly. “After all, he’s agreed to give me away.”
Jackie looked as if she was about to say more, but the Doctor shot her a look and she subsided. “Here we are,” he said as the limo pulled up in front of the church. He helped Rose get out of the limousine and the four of them made their way inside.
Rose had never been more grateful for anything as she was for the pain block that the Doctor had installed for her right before she’d changed into her wedding dress. The relief had been almost instantaneous. She had been trying to be brave and strong and not worry him or her mother, but she still wasn’t sure she was fully recovered from the past two days’ events.
Now as she stood looking at herself in the mirror she had to bite her lip to keep herself from crying. In her heart of hearts she knew she was already married to the Doctor, but this…this felt like the wedding day she’d always dreamed of in the most secret part of her heart. She may have protested at some of what Jackie had tried to arrange, but this church with its jewel-toned stained glass and dark mahogany pews and its ornate tapestries was everything she’d hoped for when she’d first set foot in it as a child with her great grandmother Tyler. She’d not been in it often since, but it had burned its memory into her brain.
“Quit biting your lip. You’ve ruined your lippie and got it all over your teeth,” Shireen admonished her. She handed Rose a tissue. “Here, wipe it off.” Rose patted at her teeth and then carefully reapplied the makeup.
Keisha poked her head into the dressing room. “It’s time.”
Shireen grabbed Rose’s bouquet and handed it to her. Rose stared down at the pink, white, yellow, and lavender bouquet. They formed a large, rounded circle with trailing ribbons in matching colors cascading down from the base to nearly her knees. Shireen and Keisha took up their own flowers and they headed out into the foyer.
Keisha paused in the opening to the sanctuary and the soft music suddenly changed to Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. That was the cue for her to start down the aisle. Mickey came to her side. “You look beautiful, Rose.”
“Thank you, Mickey.” Her voice was choked and smiled at him with tenderness.
“For what?” he asked in surprise.
“For everything. You got me through some really hard times and the way I left it…”
“Shh, we’ve been all over that, Rose. We both did some bad things, but there was more good in you and me than anything. I remember that. And I love you. I’ll always love you. But I’m not in love with you anymore. You belong with him. I know that and I’m not begrudging you this day. Not at all.”
She smiled in heartfelt relief. “I love you, too, Mickey.” He hugged her briefly and laid a soft kiss on her cheek as Shireen lined herself up in the entryway and then slowly made her way to the front. Mickey offered Rose his arm and she took it and they moved into position.
As Shireen reached the front of the sanctuary and took her place next to Keisha, the music changed again to the Wedding March. The Doctor turned to look at her and his eyes seemed to shine with fire as he took in her appearance. The look on his face was so soft and his smile so loving that she couldn’t help beaming back at him. He might be besotted beyond reason, but so was she.
Together she and Mickey took short, measured steps down the aisle and when at last she reached the end and Mickey handed her over, she barely noticed him taking a seat beside her mother. Her arm was entwined with the Doctor’s and all was right with the world.
She didn’t remember much of the ceremony. She knew that she spoke in the appropriate places and she recited her vows, vows that could never say what they’d said during the privacy of the bonding ceremony, but vows that meant the world to her nonetheless. She knew that the Doctor had kept his eyes locked with hers and he’d spoken similar words, but she didn’t really come back to reality again until he was kissing her in front of everyone and the minister was pronouncing them husband and wife. More than anything else, she felt relief that all of the difficult parts were finally over.
“’t’was a beautiful ceremony,” Jackie slurred loudly. “My Rose was so boo—beyou—beaut—pretty!”
“She is really drunk,” Rose said softly in the Doctor’s ear as they swayed gently to the music. She’d kept an eye on her mother ever since she’d hit the bar hard an hour ago.
“You’re not wrong,” said the Doctor, “but neither is she. You were a very beautiful bride. For the third time.”
Rose smiled and kissed the side of his face then leant her head wearily against his shoulder. “You weren’t so shabby yourself.”
“And then I said—I said—what’d I say? Oh, yes, then I asked her what’d she want to go and marry a bloody alien for,” Jackie said loudly. Rose cringed.
“Alien? I thought he was from Manchester,” said Bev.
“Nah, no, nope. Gall—Gallifrey!” Jackie said triumphantly.
“Doctor,” Rose began worriedly.
“That near Amsterdam?” asked Cousin Mo.
“No, I think it’s in Norway,” corrected Bev.
Rose relaxed until Jackie said, “She’s up the duff, you know. Had to marry her.”
“Mum!” she exclaimed breaking away from the Doctor. It was hardly a secret anymore from close friends and family, despite the disguising gown and perception filter jewelry she wore, but she still didn’t want the entire world knowing.
“That is not why I married your daughter!” the Doctor said indignantly. “You are drunk, Jackie Tyler.”
“Maybe we should take her home,” said Rose reluctantly. She didn’t really want to leave her wedding reception, there were many people she hadn’t spoken with yet, but if her mother was slipping about the Doctor being an alien from Gallifrey, they needed to get her out of there. Plus, she eyed the buffet table reluctantly, she’d not had much chance to eat and she was starving. She glanced back at her mother.
“You know what? Jack and I’ll get her home and then we’ll come back and we can stay here just as long as you feel good enough, all right?” the Doctor said. “You get a bite to eat while I’m gone. Mickey!” The Doctor raised his voice to get the young man’s attention.
Mickey made his way over. “Jackie’s three sheets to the wind,” he said in response to the man’s curious expression. “I’m going to get Jack and take her home, but I want you to keep an eye on Rose. Make sure she gets something to eat and isn’t on her feet too much.”
“Right, Doctor.” He offered Rose his arm and the Doctor went to pry Jack off Darren and Shireen to help him manage Jackie.
They bustled her out to one of the waiting limousines under much protest and then Mickey settled Rose at the head table. “I’ll get you something to eat. I still remember what you like.”
“Cake,” said Rose. “I want cake.”
Mickey laughed. He brought her a plate of meat and vegetables and at her dark look he raised his hand. “I’m going for the cake right now,” he promised.
Rose smiled and dug into her food, pausing as Charlie gave her a sharp kick to the kidney. “Oi, settle down in there,” she whispered softly. Her stomach rippled, but the baby settled back down and after a moment to catch her breath she went back to dining. Mickey returned with the promised cake, plus a glass of sparkling cider. He then grabbed himself some food and settled down next to her.
“So how’s it feel to be an old married lady?” Mickey asked her, grinning at her indignant look.
“I’m younger than you, Mister,” she said.
“I’m not so sure about that anymore. How many years you been gone now?”
She elbowed him in the ribs. “Not that many.”
They chatted as they ate with an ease that had been missing between them for a long time. Numerous people stopped by the table to chat, but Rose found she could get away with a lot of smiling and nodding while continuing to feed herself. By the time she felt satisfied she was beginning to wonder why the Doctor and Jack weren’t back yet. She was about to dig around in her beaded bag for her mobile and give him a call when Mickey asked her to dance.
She had always loved dancing with Mickey and even though she wasn’t as agile as she used to be it kept her distracted for an additional twenty minutes before she started to worry about the Doctor again. Just as she started looking around for him again, Shireen appeared with her bag.
“You’re mobile’s going off.”
Rose took the bag from Shireen and dug out the phone. “Hello?” she answered a little anxiously.
“It’s me,” the Doctor said. “You’re mother’s home fine, but she vomited all over the both of us.” His voice was dark and annoyed sounding. The TARDIS is cleaning our tuxedos and Jack’s charmed Mrs. Madigan to sitting with her so we can get back to the reception. How are you doing?” he asked.
“Fine. I got to eat,” she said, “And Mickey’s taking good care of me.”
“All right. We’ll be back as soon as we can be.” Rose let out an involuntary, startled gasp as her entire stomach rippled visibly under her dress.
“What? What is it?” the Doctor demanded, worry suddenly thick in his voice.
“Doctor,” she said as liquid suddenly pooled around her feet. “My water just broke.”

Date: 2012-06-06 04:18 pm (UTC)Poor Rose having to deal with her mother with too many drinks in her system, but it was good of the Doctor to take care of her. Although, I will admit I laughed at the image of both the Doctor and Jack having to deal with a vomiting Jackie.
Good on Mickey. It's great to see them working out their issues together and being the good friends they can be together.
YAY! Charlie's going to be here soon! I can't wait!

Date: 2012-06-06 04:41 pm (UTC)It was good to see Mickey and Rose getting along so well. It was a nice touch to have Mickey give Rose away.
Jackie getting drunk at Rose's reception was classic. I love her pronouncements. It will give the relatives something to talk about for years!
This is my favorite part. I love how the TARDIS wants to watch the ceremony and the Doctor's endearment towards Rose:
“She’s in a cantankerous mood this morning,” the Doctor said, overhearing her comment. “Mickey and I’ve spent the last hour setting up a live feed to the church so she can have the festivities beamed directly to her.” He looked Rose up and down. “You look beautiful, mother of my child, and beloved of my heart.” Rose beamed at him.
Thank you for another perfect installment! Come on Charlie boy!

Date: 2012-06-08 05:49 am (UTC)Jackie had to get drunk. She's still not too terribly sure of this union between her daughter and that alien she brought home. LOL
I think the TARDIS would want in on the wedding. I think she's probably very put out that they couldn't park her inside the church. Or hold the wedding inside her. So the Doctor had to give her something.

I can't wait to finally meet Charlie! I feel like I've known him for so long and he's not even here yet. XD So excited for the next chapter!♥
