So the hubster and I were having an argument over the proper topping for a hotdog. Mostly because I'm nauseated and trying to keep my food down and he's eating something gross. Hence my totally unbiased poll.

Who DOESN'T put ketchup on a hot dog?

Oh, thank you. I only ever put relish on Costco dogs if I happen to get one there, because they actually have dill relish. Sweet relish is just... bleh.

(Not that I eat hotdogs really because mustard and hotdogs both trigger migraines. Meh.)

And suddenly I'm reminded that I haven't eaten today... *lol*

Actually, I like my hotdogs with either ketchup, mustard and cheese or chili, cheese and onions. I don't like the onions with the ketchup, mustard and cheese for some odd reason.

Now, I really have to find something to eat!

Australian's usually are only given the option for ketchup (or as we call it sauce)

I haven't eaten a hot dog in nearly 35 years except for a kosher one where gross stuff can't be included and even then maybe one a decade... that being said, all of them belong in their own measure... combinations of them should be limited however

Well, being British, may I take this moment to say how BORING our hotdogs are. However, I'm pretty drunk so I'm willing to try a chilli cheese one right about now *g*

It is all about the mustard on the dog.

Preferably it is a Dodger Dog from Farmer Johns!

I usually go for ketchup, a little bit of mustard and some shredded cheese on my hot dog. If there's no cheese I just usually go for ketchup. Very rare occasions will I do the ketchup relish combo. When I was really young I over did it on the relish and wound up with a stomachache which turned me off from relish on hot dogs.

I like all of them at one time or another. Not necessarily at the same time though. :D

I was pretty sure hot dogs and ketchup went together. I have always eaten them that way.

and not on your list is mayo. I put that on my hot dog, sometimes more than ketchup

I think I've had all of those toppings on my hot dogs at one point or another...

I'm possibly the worst person to voice an opinion on this, being as I hate most condiments (hah), but I do love nacho cheese and onions on hotdogs :-D

Is Ketchup the same as tomato sauce? Because in Australia most people put sauce on a hot dog. Alternative might be mustard, onions, cheese. That's my favourite combo anyway.

Yep, we call Ketchup tomato sauce.

Technically their different things because Ketchup has a lot more sugar and in some cases other other spices in it then straight tomato sauce which is extremely pureed and thickened tomatoes. That said tomato sauce is quite close to tomato paste in consistency but like the sauce doesn't usually have either the sugar or spices for which ketchup is known to have. All that said, there isn't a huge difference unless your using them to cook.

Well, and ketchup has vinegar in it as well. Regular tomato sauce or paste does not. Though it might in Australia.

Don't you love the English language? Four countries, divided by a common language! Actually, no five. New Zealand is a country, too, not just an island, right?

What countries are you including? I grew up in Ireland and had to re-learn some vocabulary when I moved to England. And I had a friend from South Africa for a while: Afrikaaners have some different terminology as well :)

I'm sure if we thought some more we'd come up with other English-speaking countries with more language differences *g*

I was including the ones who speak it as their primary language, U.S.A., Canada, England (well, the whole U.K. to be honest even though Wales, Scotland, and Ireland all have their own languages as well), Australia and New Zealand. I know Canada has dual languages but they still primarily seem to speak English over French.

I've just been up to my pantry and read the labels - my "Big Red Sauce" has sugar, salt, spice and "acidity regulator" in it - looking up the code the acidity regulator is acetic acid which is basically vinegar.

You can buy things called Heinz "Ketchup" (instead of the "Big Red Sauce" I have), but I don't have a bottle handy today to check and we'd still call them sauce anyway.

Date: 2012-01-15 04:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amberfocus.livejournal.com
Yeah, the Heinz stuff is what I'm talking about. For us, tomato sauce is basically tomatoes, salt and ascorbic acid made into a thin, runny mess.

Easier to call it all sauce ;) - that's us taking the easylazy route.

My Nana makes a tomato chutney too that's basically tomatoes, sugar, spice and vinegar - we call that sauce too ;)

hey, where's the brown sauce option? i like brown sauce, onion, cheese, and possibly bacon bits (fried until it's hard and shattered into pieces)

From: [identity profile] othermewriter.livejournal.com
I like the chili & cheese and the ketchup onion & sauerkraut options but not together. Also been known to do the naked dog with just cheese, bun optional on the last one. Just leave off sour things on my dog and I will try most anything with one. Not that I eat a hot dog more then maybe once a year and always the kosher ones as the rest often give me heartburn.

Hmm. Mine's usually either ketchup/mustard/relish OR chili(or coney sauce)/onions/cheese.

I like both. And LOL ketchup on a hot dog is COMPLETELY normal. I've done it since childhood.

I only ever do mustard. Have since I was a youngin. Maybe once in a while some sauerkraut. Otherwise it's sacrilegious :)

I like cheese and fresh tomatoes. I used to like ketchup on french fries, but then I realized I like malt vinegar instead. Much less salt, etc than in ketchup. I used to get hotdogs at the orange julius before it went out of business, and that is where I got my taste for cheese on a hot dog.

late getting here (evil technology, don't ask) and I actually ticked three boxes, but I wouldn't have them all at once.

For me the first choice is always onions on their own,but if there are none available I have ketchup and mustard (yes together)

me too if I ate hot dogs, they are so gross. but I also love to put something spicy like habanero sauce to disguise the flavor.
