As simple as the Doctor had tried to make it sound, getting Rose pregnant turned out not to be such an easy thing to do. When she still hadn’t conceived by the time their contracts were nearly up they had to sit down and decide what they were going to do. Rose thought that maybe the Doctor would take up his previous desire of having his own ship again, but he didn’t appear to want to do that at all.
“I think we should sign new contracts, stay here another year,” he said as they crawled into bed. “I know we have enough saved now to buy a ship and leave, but I don’t want to give up trying to have a baby just yet. It’s only been a few months. And Dr. Ilyatto said that if we hadn’t conceived by the end of this week he’ll run a few tests for us. They’ve got a great fertility clinic for interspecies couples. Maybe they can help.”
“I thought that Gallifreyan sperm could conquer anything,” she said.
“Well, maybe if I were a younger man,” he said ruefully.
“You’re not old,” she said. “I mean comparatively.”
“Weeeellll, remember how I said I was nine hundred when we met?”
“And later you told me you’d fudged the truth a bit there? Yeah.”
“Might have been a bit more fudging than I cared to let on,” he admitted.
“How much? Doctor, how old are you really?” she demanded.
“A bit over 1500,” he admitted.
“How much is a bit?” she asked because she couldn’t think of anything else to say to the fact that he’d knocked over 600 years off his life.
“1576,” he said sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck.
“So that makes you what in human years?” she asked.
“Rose, I’m not a dog. You can’t equate the lifespan of a human and a Gallifreyan like that!” he said slightly offended.
Rose rolled her eyes. “You’re the one who is always talking about old dogs learning new tricks,” she teased. “Especially in bed. Now, how old would you be if you were human?”
“About 58,” he grudgingly admitted, because apparently, yes, you could equate it like dog years if forced. “So…maybe there’s a problem with motility or something. But I’ve told Dr. Ilyatto that we’ve been trying for a year. Otherwise he’d make us wait that long before he’d see us.”
Rose shrugged. “Why start telling the truth now?” she asked.
“Oi!” he said.
“Well, you’re not very good at it. Doesn’t he make exceptions for cross species couples?” she asked.
“Not when one of them is human. I told you—.”
“Yeah, I know,” she said interrupting rudely. “Humans and their slutty genes.”
“I said no such thing. I said accommodating genome,” he protested.
“Yeah, but it was the way you said it. Same way you use to say stupid apes. Like everything about humans is inferior.”
“Well, it’s not how I meant it. Honestly, Rose. I don’t think you’re inferior. You’re my wife. You know how I feel about you. And your species is amazing. It’s how they’ve managed to spread out across the entire universe in so little time.” The Doctor gazed at her earnestly.
Rose was silent for a long while then sighed. “Let’s not argue over this. I suppose we can sign new contracts, but I’d like to get this settled before then. Once I’m pregnant I won’t be able to dive with scuba gear anymore. I’ll be confined to leading the snorkeling tours of the reef and the pressurized submersible expeditions. I’m not going back to the shops. If they need to replace me as a dive instructor I’d like to let them know before this contract is up.”
“Okay,” the Doctor agreed. He fell silent.
Rose picked at the blanket covering her and turned on her side to look at the Doctor. “What if…what if we can’t get pregnant, Doctor?” she asked.
“Then it wasn’t meant to be. But we’ve got years yet to try.”
“But not so many years. Not really. I’m twenty-four now. I’d like to have kids while I’m still young. I don’t want to be having them at 30. I’d be close to 50 by the time they were grown and I don’t know how much adventuring I’ll be able to do then…”
“Rose, there are methods of extending the human lifespan. In this century particularly a human can live up to 300 years.”
“As long as I take the treatments while I’m still young,” Rose reminded him. “I want to take them before I’m 30 as well. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life looking older than you are. It’s vanity I suppose, but I don’t. You’ll not age much physically, but I will if I wait too long. And once I take them…well, you know sterility is a side-effect of rejuvenation therapy.”
The Doctor sighed. “If I still had the TARDIS—,” he began.
“If you still had the TARDIS we wouldn’t be married and talking about having children,” Rose said flatly.
“Yes,” said the Doctor gravely and firmly, “we would. I told you, Rose, when I gave you this ring,” he ran his finger along the ring resting it lightly on the stone, “that I had been carrying around that diamond for weeks trying to find the right time to propose. I meant it. I’d wanted to for ages. I’d wanted to move our relationship past the occasional snog during times of crisis. And as for children…remember that conversation we had back when we were dealing with the Moreni?” he asked.
“We had a lot of conversations back then.”
“You intimated that you didn’t care for children,” he said. Rough emotion filled his voice and Rose turned his hand around to hold it. “From your attitude, I didn’t think you’d want kids…”
“The Moreni children were literally insane. You can’t hold what I felt about them against all normal children and besides, I was nineteen!” Rose said. “A lot can change in five years. You did. You were a whole other man. A man who never would have broken the strict rules he’d put in place for our relationship. You didn’t see me as a romantic partner back then.”
“Yes, I did,” he said. “But you had Mickey and I was an old man who looked like an old man.”
“No, you didn’t. You were dead sexy,” Rose interrupted. “If you’d asked…if I thought you wanted me back then I would have been yours in a heartbeat.”
“Really?” he asked surprised. They’d never spoken of it before.
“I loved you, you silly man. Even then. As for kids, it’s always been more that I didn’t want to give up a life with you. Back then I never dreamed that this would be an option.”
“It is. It was. It would have been. And if I still had the TARDIS,” he put his hand up before she could interrupt him again, “I could figure out what the problem was.”
“I know you miss her.”
“I do,” he said. “I do, but what’s done is done. I could have lost you on Krop Tor, Rose. If I had to make the choice…” He pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. “It’s you every time.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” He pulled back from her and smiled, then slid his hands up under her nightgown. “Let’s try for that baby one more time, shall we?” he asked.
Rose smiled then pressed her lips firmly to his. She opened under the Doctor’s seeking tongue and felt the warm rush of desire that always filled her when the Doctor touched her intimately. His hand roamed about under her gown before settling firmly on her breast and gently rolling the nipple until it formed a taut peak. He kneaded the soft mound with firm, rhythmic squeezes, while his tongue stroked in matching time against hers. He took his time, exploring the sharp little points of her teeth and sweeping soft circles against her gums, only to return time and time again to the dance of tongues about each other.
She moaned into his mouth as his hand trailed down her body, nerve endings coming to life under his touch. He broke the kiss as his fingers discovered her center. “No knickers?” he asked in delight, stroking through the wetness that had accumulated there.
“Well, they do tend to get in the way,” she said with a smile. She ran her hand down his body and said, “It might be best if you get rid of these,” when she encountered his boxers. She still hadn’t gotten used to him wearing them instead of his usual boxer briefs, but supposedly they helped fertility.
The Doctor squirmed out of them and Rose wrapped her hand tightly around his penis. It leapt to attention under her knowing hand and the Doctor closed his eyes, sighing happily as she stroked him. Rose took her time. Lately when it was the correct time of month for ovulation, sex had become somewhat mechanical and rushed. It had been more with purpose and less with a focus on pure enjoyment.
She moved down his body with little kisses until she reached his pelvis. Skipping over the coarse hairs she took him into her mouth tonguing the soft velvet head in little circles just under the frenulum before sinking down to take him nearly to the back of her throat. The Doctor let out a soft sound of pleasure as he expanded into full hardness in her mouth. Rose smiled around him. She couldn’t help thinking of it as the ‘big library whimper' nowadays.
Rose worked him slowly, varying her suction, as she slid up and down the thick shaft. She loved doing this for him so much. It was something he enjoyed immensely but somehow felt he never had the right to ask for. Her hand reached between his legs to cradle his balls. After a while she released him, kissing her way down his length to carefully suck one of his balls into her mouth.
The Doctor gave a little shudder and then placed his hand in her hair. “Rose, sweetheart, I’m going to come if you keep that up.” With a reluctant sigh she released him and then sat up. She skimmed off her nightgown, dropping it to the floor beside the bed. “Would you like me to…?” he asked.
“Very much,” she said. She lay down and opened her legs for the Doctor. He settled between them, gently parting her folds with his fingers. He studied her clinically the way he always did when he started such activities. A finger reached out and stroked across her clit making it rise up hard and firm under his touch. He trailed his finger through her wetness before slipping it inside her. Rose made a soft mewling sound and he grinned up at her before snaking his tongue out and settling to work on her clit.
The Doctor was very good at this particular activity, somehow always managing to find the right variation in movement to keep her in a steady rise towards orgasm. He could, she knew, set her off almost immediately and there were times when she was very stressed that she would ask him to, but for the most part she’d rather have this slow build. Sensations rippled through her nipples as he sucked and licked the little nubbin. His finger inside her was joined by a second and he slowly began to move them in and out.
She knew when he switched from the English alphabet to the Gallifreyan one as the number of circular movements increased tenfold. She stopped thinking shortly thereafter, awash on the sensation radiating up into her belly and down across her thighs. The slow, steady pace finally began to increase and her breath came in quick, short gasps as he brought her to the pinnacle and kept her teetering on the edge for far too long.
Her hands grabbed his hair, pulling it and he quit teasing her. His fingers curled inside her, finding the perfect spot as his tongue became a hardened point and he sent her at last sailing over the cliff edge into a glorious orgasm that clenched every muscle in her body again and again and left her a panting, sweaty mess of happiness.
When she returned to reality the Doctor was looking at her with a very smug grin on his face. She smiled weakly in return. She had no strength left in her body. Fortunately she didn’t need it as the Doctor positioned himself between her legs. He draped her knees over his elbows and pushed inside. He began long, measured strokes inside her, each plunge bumping gently against her cervix.
After several glorious minutes of this he asked, “Do you want to have another orgasm before I come?” He always asked, was always such a gentleman about it. She kind of thought it was kind of unfair that he could control his own pleasure, and hers to a certain extent, just by focusing on how and where their bodies connected. Still, she certainly had taken advantage of it enough on her own.
“You know what I want?” she asked.
“No. That’s why I’m asking,” he told her with a half smile.
“I want to feel you inside my head, not just my body,” she said.
“Are you sure? It’ll overwhelm everything.”
“Yeah. Yeah, I am. No holding back tonight, Doctor. I want to give you everything.”
He altered their positions, dropping one leg and resting on his elbow so he could cradle the side of her face with his hand, his first two fingers at her temple and his thumb at the base of her jaw. She felt him almost immediately. He oozed into her mind like a warmth of silver liquid. It bathed her in security, in love, in the knowledge that she was the most precious thing in the universe to him. “Don’t get lost in me,” he whispered, but the words were not spoken aloud. They blew through her thoughts like a light spring breeze, bringing with it the scent of apple grass. “Find yourself and meet me in the middle.”
It was hard, she felt so small in comparison to his presence and for a moment she couldn’t even remember her own name. Then as if being buoyed up on the gentle waves of a warm ocean she saw herself as he saw her, golden and shining and brilliant and she held onto it, held onto herself and met his warmth instead of being absorbed by it. She felt another presence, too. Something as old as time, something maybe older and she recognized it. It was Bad Wolf.
She refused to back away from its power and she felt her personality solidifying more strongly. The Doctor was beside her then, holding her hand and together they faced the sheer power that they’d both held in their bodies once upon a time, if only briefly.
“This is what you’ve waited for,” the new presence said. “Now you may begin.”
In that heartbeat everything changed. A curious rush enveloped them like the winds of a tornado, buffeting them but not harming them in any way. Rose felt as if she was being carried off, but the Doctor’s hand was still firmly in hers. Suddenly she was flying as physical sensation met mental and she knew the Doctor was with her in it as they both fell into orgasm.
Their minds stayed connected though; she could feel the sensation of his coming, and yet at the same time she could see it as if through a wildly altered microscope. She saw the rush of sperm racing through her, seeking out the egg, saw as one burrowed firmly through the tough outer layer and made contact, saw the genetic material begin combining and then dividing. She didn’t know how long they stood there watching, but it felt like hours were passing.
Finally the strange vision began to fade from before her and she came back to herself. The Doctor was by her side saying her name and stroking the side of her face. “Rose, Rose, come back to me, Rose.”
“I’m here,” she said. She smiled lazily up at him. “It worked. I’m pregnant.”
He nodded. “I saw,” he said. The look he gave her was one of awe. “I know why it took so long now.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re not human anymore. Well, not fully human. Bad Wolf changed you, back on the game station. You’re immortal, Rose. Or very nearly. Because of the changes, it would have taken much longer if we hadn’t made the final connection of mind. Bad Wolf knew it was time to let it happen once we were fully joined,” he said.
“What is she? Bad Wolf?” Rose asked. “What is she really?”
“Part of the TARDIS, part of the very Time Vortex itself, channeled through you, once upon a time,” he said. He kissed her softly on the tip of her nose, then less softly on the mouth.
“Does that mean she’s still alive? Not Bad Wolf, but the TARDIS? Is she out there somewhere?” Rose asked.
“I don’t know, Rose. Maybe it’s just an echo, just a message left there for us, triggered when the time was right. But if she is out there, well…there’s plenty of time to go looking for her after we’ve raised our family,” he said. “What are twenty, twenty-five years on the slow path raising children when we have eternity to hunt for the TARDIS?” he asked. “I’ll see if I can build a detector over the next few years. There’s lab space available down on deck omega. I can get it for free if we sign a five year contract.”
Rose nodded settling down into his arms for the night. “Sounds…perfect.” And it did. Maybe they’d never see the TARDIS again, but if there was any chance at all, Rose knew it was something she wanted, not just for herself, not even just for him, but for their children. It was a legacy they should know. Bad Wolf, the TARDIS, the Time Vortex and Rose Tyler, together with the Doctor. As it should be, she thought. As it should be.

She stopped thinking shortly thereafter, awash on the sensation radiating up into her belly and down across her thighs. The slow, steady pace finally began to increase and her breath came in quick, short gasps as he brought her to the pinnacle and kept her teetering on the edge for far too long.

“Yeah. Yeah, I am. No holding back tonight, Doctor. I want to give you everything.”
He altered their positions, dropping one leg and resting on his elbow so he could cradle the side of her face with his hand, his first two fingers at her temple and his thumb at the base of her jaw.
