This New Show I'm Watching

So I've been watching this new U.K. show called Demons and I rather like it even though it is a shameless rip off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, right down to the Watcher--oh, wait, that's Smiter--named Rupert. His last name even starts with a G. Okay, it's Galvin and not Giles, but come on! And we have our requisite unrequited love/best friend in Xander, oh, wait, her name is Ruby. Sorry. And the role of Buffy is played by a Luke Van Helsing. Seriously. Van Helsing. There's a Mina Harker, too, in the lovely role of Angel/Cordelia. Oh, yes. No sexually confused witches or short werewolves or bleached soulful vamps with crazy girlfriends, but give them time.
Despite the fact that it is a shameless rip off, it's very watchable. It fills the young (read high school era, not college years) Buffy void nicely. And young Christian Cooke makes a very pretty, fit Luke. Actually, everyone on the show is so pretty you'd think it was an American made show.

Ruby, Luke, Rupert, and Mina
See? Pretty. Plus, and here's the best part, the Smiter/Watcher guy is played by Philip Glenister. That's DCI Gene Hunt from Life on Mars. The U.K. version, not the American remake. That man makes me get growly in a way that normally is only brought up by a certain man with the last name of Eccleston. It is weird hearing him speak with an American accent, but if Buffy is British, than Giles must, it stands to reason, be American.
I admit it is entirely mindless but there are times when you just really want that in a show. Mindless and young and fun. And it reminds me of just how much I miss Buffy since it's been gone. Oh, and I feel perfectly okay with allowing my twelve year old to watch it so far. No sex, no real swearing, lots of good old fashioned adventure and good quality acting. Actually, if my almost nine-year-old wants to watch it, I think it's safe for him, too. All in all, I'm looking forward to the final two episodes and yet again wishing all U.K. shows were at least like DW and Torchwood and did double the normal number of eps.
