Chapter Four:  Meet the Family

Rose sat back on her heels, enjoying the look of amazement that crossed the Doctor’s face. He didn’t look upset or happy or much of anything other than confused and perhaps a little bit dazed. “But we never…I mean, I never…with you…and…I’m sure that…well, I’d, you know…really remember doing…that…so… I mean…we didn’t…ever…did we?”

Rose wanted to laugh but she bit back on it. She’d been staggered when she’d realized it, so it wasn’t fair to laugh at his bafflement, even if she was enjoying his flustered speech. He pulled himself together. “It’s impossible. I mean I wasn’t here to get you pregnant.”

“Doctor, I think you really ought to check the definition of impossible in the dictionary. I don’t think it means quite the same thing as what you think it means. Because not only is it possible, but it’s highly likely. Well, more than that. It simply is. Landon is the spitting image of you. Mairi has your last incarnation’s eyes and smile though thankfully not the nose because it really wouldn’t work on a girl even if I thought it was dead sexy on you, and Jamie, oh dear sweet Jamie has your gob and your curiosity and your mind and your intolerance for really stupid people or for that matter smart ones who ought to know better but don’t. She looks an awful lot like I do at the moment, but she’s got your cheekbones and your nose. No, I can’t mistake their father for anyone else. They’re yours.” It all came out on a rush.

“But how, Rose?” he asked.

“Well, I have my theories,” she said smoothing a hand over her hair. “And I think if I ask the TARDIS I’m pretty sure she’ll confirm them. Do you remember before you regenerated, right before that when I had the Time Vortex running through my veins?”

“Not likely to forget that,” he said.

“Well, I think it happened when you took it from me. When you kissed me,” she said.

“You remembered that?” he asked.

“Yeah, shortly before I realized I was pregnant with Landon all of those memories came flooding back. Anyway, I think that when you took the power out of me, you put something else into me. See, you didn’t get it all. Bits and pieces of the Vortex got encoded into my DNA and it slowly started turning me into a Time Lady. The first time I accessed the power the change was completed. That was twenty-seven years ago when I ended up pregnant with Landon. For a whole year, mind you. Nice gestation period your people had,” she said sardonically.

She gave him a reassuring smile and continued. “I’ve used Bad Wolf three, well no, four times now to patch up cracks in this universe. And every time I have, it’s activated something in me to cause a pregnancy. I think when you kissed me it caused some kind of genetic transfer and the relevant bits of your DNA were stored in my junk DNA, ready to be pulled out at the time the power was accessed again.”

“I suppose that’s plausible. Actually, it’s quite brilliant. How’d you come to that conclusion?” he asked.

“Well…I did a lot of studying. I’ve got doctorates in most of the sciences.”

“Good for you!” He was thrilled.

“Plus, U.N.I.T. has some pretty advanced alien research. I’ve waded through most of it. And then some of it is just common sense,” she explained.

“Indeed. So you…what do you mean you’ve used Bad Wolf four times? You have three kids. If that theory holds you should have four…”

“Yeah, fourth time was yesterday, right after I regenerated. It’s too soon to tell, but if the pattern holds you’re going to be a daddy. Again. Congratulations.” Rose grinned at him and then giggled.

The Doctor shook his head. “Three children and one on the way. That’s not what I was expecting when I ran into you again, Rose Tyler,” he said.

“Me either. I had always hoped that we could have done it the fun way,” she said cheekily.

She giggled again at the look on his face. “You know what? You’re still as big a minx today as you ever were,” the Doctor told her.

Rose gave a grin of acceptance at that. “And you’re still as gorgeous as I remember. Now how about we stand up and you give me a proper hello hug,” she said.

The Doctor got to his feet and pulled her up. Then his arms were around her, holding her tightly to him and she was hugging him back fiercely. When he finally loosened his grasp on her body, she put a little space between them and looked up at him. Then she grabbed onto the back of his neck, pulled his head down and gave him the most thorough snogging of his life.

“If that’s how she says hello, how does she say how are you?” Luke wondered from across the room.

The Doctor decided that an answer for his young companion was just going to have to wait. He was rather looking forward to finding out the answer for himself, though. He rather liked this new, bold Rose. Well, she’d always been bold but not in this particular manner.

An impatient knocking on the TARDIS doors brought them back to reality and they reluctantly broke apart. Rose slipped her hand into his and led him to the door. Without hesitation she brought him out of the ship. “Welcome to Moon Base One, Doctor. You remember Jake, and this is my boss, Brigadier-General John Cassidien. And this,” and she led the Doctor over to the side, “Is Landon. Landon, this is your father.”

Landon stared at the man with a face so similar to his own and the Doctor stared back at him. “Hello?” Landon said, his word definitely a question.

“Hello. Son,” said the Doctor. The two men shook hands a little awkwardly.

Suddenly a terribly loud commotion broke out in the hallway. They could hear loud female voices arguing quite stridently and then the doors burst open and Jamie Tyler flung herself into the room, followed closely by her older sister Mairi. “I don’t care,” Jamie was saying. “You can’t just tell me Mum regenerated and not expect me to…” Jamie trailed off, her eyes taking in the scene before her.

“Sorry, Mum, Brig, Jake. I tried to stop her, but you know what she’s like when she gets an idea into her head…” But then Mairi trailed off, too as Jamie reached back, grabbed her sister’s hand and pulled her up beside her.

Jamie’s eyes had locked on to the Doctor’s and she stared at him in wonder, her mind recognizing him for what he was, the new voice in her head. “Daddy?” she whispered.

He stared at the girl with her pretty, heart-shaped face, shoulder-length black curls, and brown eyes and then gave her a gentle smile and a nod. He held out his arms to her and she flung herself across the room, nearly knocking him down as she wrapped her arms around him in a fierce hug.

“That’s Jamie,” Rose said. “And the other one is her sister, Mairi.” Slowly Mairi came forward and when Jamie finally let go of the Doctor, Mairi leaned forward and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

“Hello, father,” she said calmly. “It’s good to finally meet you.”

Jamie finally turned her attention on her mother, but her hand was firmly holding onto the Doctor’s. “Wow, look at you. Didn’t you get even more gorgeous? And…hey! Are those my jeans?” she asked her eyes suddenly narrowing.

“Sorry, sweetie, but my clothes don’t fit anymore. Too curvy now. I have to order some new stuff, and I’ll get you something too, to make up for having to share. Or maybe,” Rose said, a new thought occurring to her, “We can just have a go in the TARDIS wardrobe room.”

Jamie’s eyes got wide. She’d heard stories of the wardrobe room. Her mother had told her how vast it was, saying once that she wouldn’t have been surprised to find Narnia in it. Not at the end of it, but in it.

“Of course, you can,” said the Doctor.

“Good to see you again, Doctor,” Jake said when the Doctor’s attention moved to the other men in the room.

“Jake,” he nodded.

“Well,” said John. “So you’re the mysterious Doctor I’ve heard so much about.”

“Yep,” he said, popping the p. “That would be me.”

The Doctor shook hands with Rose’s boss. “I suppose you should take him down to HR and get him some I.D., Rose.” He glanced back at the Doctor. “You can’t go anywhere on the base or in the colonies without some form of I.D.”

“Don’t I need some type of clearance?” asked the Doctor.

“If Rose is vouching for you, that’s good enough for me,” John said. “You won’t be cleared for everything, but Rose says you’re the biggest expert on alien life that she knows, and one of her species, so we’ll start out trusting you and unless you give us a reason not to, you should be free to go just about anywhere.”

The Brigadier turned to Rose. “Once HR is done, why don’t you take him back to your place and get him settled in?”

“Oh, wait,” said Rose. “What about Luke?” She turned to find the boy standing hesitantly in the doorway of the TARDIS. Luke took a step out into the laboratory.

“Who’s this?” asked Mairi. “Do we have another sibling?”

“No,” said the Doctor. “This is Luke Smith. He’s the son of a friend of mine. I’m looking after him while his mum is on vacation.”

Rose introduced Luke to her children. She noted that Jamie shook Luke’s hand for quite a bit longer than was strictly necessary. And Luke was staring at Jamie like he’d never seen a pretty girl before in his life. She suppressed a grin. She recognized the signs of infatuation. Evan Cassidien may just be about to be given a run for his money when it came to the heart of Jamie Tyler.
