Chapter Thirty:  To Call Our Own

They had chosen to honeymoon on Earth and though they both had a little hesitation on going there, the first place they stopped was Darlig ulv Stranden, trying to prove it no longer held any power over them, that it was just a place like any other. Of course, it was different because the beach they had stood on to say good-bye had been in the parallel world, and neither of them thought they had quite that much courage to return there, even the next time they went through the gateway.

Rose looked around them at the sight of what had always struck her as the most desolate place in the universe, realizing for the first time just how beautiful it was, despite the chill and the remoteness of it. They walked along the water’s edge, listening to the forlorn cry of sea birds and the pounding of the surf.

The Doctor clutched her hand tightly in his, and she knew that as calm as he looked outwardly, this place hit him as hard as it hit her. Before when they had been here they hadn’t been able to touch each other, to offer that simple bit of comfort during what had broken them both.

“I’m sorry,” the Doctor said, stopping and turning towards her, picking up her other hand. “I’m sorry I didn’t say it that day. I was going to, but I was a coward. I saved it for last and I ran out of time. Silly, that. I’m a Time Lord and yet when I looked into your face and saw your pain and felt my own, I lost all sense of time. I should have told you. I shouldn’t have made you wait years to hear those words from me. I used to think they were the hardest words in the universe to say. And now they’re deceptively simple. I love you, Rose Tyler. I love you.”

“Quite right to,” she said cheekily, but followed that up with a grin and a quick, “And I love you, too Doctor.” She reached up and pulled his head down and kissed him, her arms pulling him close and his encircling her body. Kissing after the bonding was more intense than it had ever been, for she could feel his emotions entwining with her own.

The Doctor broke away from her and said, “Right, I better get you back to the TARDIS. This isn’t a private beach and the locals might frown on us doing exactly what I want to be doing after that kiss.”

Rose laughed, said, “Race you!” and dashed off towards the TARDIS. The Doctor watched her run for a few seconds before taking off after her.

They spent 3 days at the Louvre followed by a midnight visit to the Eiffel Tower. They stood at the very top, a place not allowed to the general public, but when the TARDIS could land anywhere, they pretty much got a free pass. The view of Paris was spectacular and Rose was happy that she had finally gotten to see it.

They visited London in the middle of the night, running along a bridge holding hands, pausing to look at the London Eye for a long time and reliving old memories. They’d had to return to the TARDIS again after a few minutes of snogging. They stayed in the city long enough for Rose to visit a little T-shirt shop and she had two specially made for the Doctor, since she never had decided which silly saying she’d liked best and really Time Lords did do it all night long and in four dimensions. At least her Time Lord did.

From London they moved on to Italy, Sicily, Greece and then back in time to a tropical island before it had been inhabited with people. There they made love on the beach as they had wanted to in Norway, then spent the rest of the day playing in the surf and soaking up the sunshine.

“I love this planet,” Rose said that evening as they packed up the blanket and towels and food baskets.

“Me, too,” said the Doctor, “I always have. But I love it more because it gave me you.” That little remark earned him another tumble in the sand, followed by a nice long shower to remove said sand from places it didn’t belong.

“I have never been so happy in my life,” said Rose as they lay in bed later that night. “You’ve taken away everything that made me sad.”

The Doctor smiled at her. “So have you, Rose Tyler.” She snuggled down into his arms. Even though the Doctor had little need of sleep, he loved holding her for the hours that she slept. Even with her in dreams, he still felt the light mental touch that made up who she was, lingering in his own mind. It was a place that was no longer empty.

Rose sighed in her sleep, burrowing even closer to him. How he loved this fragile human child. Though really, she was fragile no longer. Nor was she all that human. Still, he loved her. Loved her for who she was, loved her completely and utterly. He clung to that soft mental link, curiously augmented in the deep relaxation of sleep. She still shone golden in his mind, now with the twisting of silver entwined about her, as the purple time vine had been the night of their bonding, and the very faintest edge of copper the color of her eyes.

The Doctor's smile overwhelmed his face as his emotions surged with joy, then he closed his eyes and allowed himself to sleep.

*******************************************

Rose slept in later than usual. She hadn’t needed as much sleep since her body had changed, but that morning she felt ridiculously tired. It had been a whirlwind of a honeymoon and they’d been on the go for much of it. Perhaps she’d been cheating sleep, thinking that since she didn’t need as much since the change, she could get away with it.

As she got out of bed, she lost her balance a bit, sitting back down hard on the soft surface. “Dizzy?” asked the Doctor solicitously.

“Yeah, a bit,” she said looking at him in surprise. The Doctor grinned.

“Come on, luv,” he said. “I’ll make you breakfast.” He held out his hands and hauled her up off the bed.

“Oh,” said Rose her stomach roiling at the fast movement. “Don’t think that’s the best idea you’ve ever had. I must have caught something. The idea of food right now makes me shudder.

“Oh, you’ll be okay,” the Doctor said nonchalantly. “In a few weeks.”

Rose frowned. “No thanks. I don’t want to be sick for a few weeks. Don’t you have something in the infirmary that could make this run its course any quicker?”

“’Fraid not,” said the Doctor. “I think these things just have to run their course. You should be over the worst of it in another six to eight weeks.”

“Six to eight weeks?!”

The Doctor grinned at her again, his eyes lit up in mischief. “That’s usually about how long the morning sickness lasts,” he told her happily.

“Morning sickness? I’m…?”

The Doctor nodded. “I felt it last night. You, Rose Tyler, are about six weeks pregnant. I’d say it happened the night of the bonding.”

“Pregnant.”

“Yep.” He popped the P sound.

“Pregnant?”

He nodded at her looking inordinately pleased with himself as the news finally began to sink in.

“Pregnant!” Her hands moved over her abdomen and she focused her attention deep within herself. And there it was; the faintest trace. “I can feel him,” she said tears coming to her eyes as she smiled up at him.

“Him?”

“Ah, so there’s one thing you didn’t know.”

“No. It’s too soon. You would because you’re the mother. I should be able to tell in another four weeks or so.”

A grin split Rose’s face. “We’re going to have a baby,” she said, awed.

“I know.”

“A baby.”

“I know.”

“A baby!”

The TARDIS hummed happily to herself as the joyous laughter of the two most important people in her universe echoed through her corridors. She was proud of herself, she had to admit. Really, she did very good work.
