you were totally justified on the bitching though hon. We used to get similar stuff when we were out with my late father in law. He had diabetes and a heart condition, both of which are not obvious, but combined can certainly affect your mobility to a dramatic degree.
He had all the required paperwork, signs etc, and still we used to get people making snarky comments or giving us funny looks, just because a lot of the time he "looked" okay. It used to annoy me beyond belief and a few times I did say something, on occasion it was peppered with expletives too, lol
