I'm with you on the 'isn't this a nice show...that really has very little to do with the show I used to be crazy about.' It's much like Star Trek:TNG, ST:Deep Space 9 and ST:Voyager, same universe very different shows.
Actually, what I did do is go back and watch Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead and this time I actually cared when River died. Was in fact quite sad and it made me appreciate DT even more. He turns a brilliant performance and he really doesn't even know the whole story of what his performance is about.
