What do you call ATM machines?

I think cashpoint is the most common.

Why do people even call them ATM machines here? ATM stands for automated teller machine, so the common phrase is just so redundant. However, American continue to enter their PIN (personal identification number) numbers into the ATM machines.

My guess is that we just like making aconyms into names, thus forgetting what they stand for and using redunant words to fill in for grammer.

Cashpoint is the official one I think but I hear lots of people just call it a cash machine. That's what I always say if I'm asking someone where there is one. ATM just gets you blank looks.

I'd have said "cash machine". "Cashpoint" sounds to me like an older usage.

Cash machine is very common but so is 'hole in the wall'. At least that's common amongst my friends in London and Colchester.

I have heard cashpoint and hole in the wall used. But us in the midlands tend to use cash machine.

I use all three... cashpoint, cash machine and hole in the wall. Depends on my mood. :-)

My mind would go in some alarmed or befuddled directions if someone asked me where the nearest "hole in the wall" was.
