Is there something in fic that really, really bothers you when you read it? The sort of thing that can turn you off reading, even if the rest of the fic is brilliant? Label it here... then tag five others to do the same!
I was tagged by lillitbetm3 and lostwolfchats.
I have a very hard time reading OT3 with Doctor/Rose/anyone, except maybe the TARDIS. I don't believe the Doctor or Rose would be willing to share each other with another person in the least. About the only person I'll read OT3 from is wendymr because she usually does it in a way that I can actually see possibly happening if it would happen under any circumstance.
If a fic has sketchy science in it, or wrong science in it, it bothers me. I like reasonable, rational explanations for how Rose gets back to this universe. Although I will buy she doesn't know how she got back and she's just suddenly here or Bad Wolf did it, I'd prefer to see how Bad Wolf did it, and not just be told she used her powers, now she's here. That bugs me. I'd rather the how of getting back be ignored completely and a writer start with her being back then to have it poorly explained or it be obvious the writer just couldn't think of a way to explain it. Research is good and it shows.
I don't like characters acting out of character. Mickey for example, is a sweet, loveable, easily hurt, smart, easily taken advantage of, all around good guy. If you're going to make him evil, there needs to be a logical reason behind it or possession by aliens or something or I'm not going to buy it. Martha is pretty but she's not a sex goddess and there was never even a hint of sex between her and the Doctor so I can't buy them in bed, though I could see Martha sleeping with Jack and regretting it the next day. Alien sex pollen or shag or die is the only way Donna would ever sleep with the Doctor and even then they'd both be freaking out about it the whole time, not deciding that this was something they now wanted to take up as a hobby. Ianto and Gwen are not going to shack up. They both would sleep with Jack, but they're not going to fall in love with each other. The Doctor would never sleep with Jackie, either Nine or Ten.
Fics with words spelled wrong all the time, using their, they're, and there or you're and your wrong all the time (once or twice I can handle, but all the time bugs me).
Always writing to the accent when it's not necessary. I hate it when I see someone write fink for think or 's instead of it's. I can handle 's once in a while, but not peppered through the entire fic. It's Rose, I already hear her accent in my head, I don't need it pounded in by non-words or wrong words. Though I don't mind gonna, gotta or wanna.
Overuse of the tongue between her teeth with Rose. Every single chapter? No. More than once in one chapter? Too much. Five or six times in a 30 chapter fic, okay.

Date: 2008-06-04 02:58 am (UTC)That said, I agree with you so much about the out of character thing. Nothing can ruin an otherwise good story than having somebody pop up and be SO -- well, wrong is the best word I can thing of. Though honestly usually if one character is going to be off enough to bother me I probably have given up on the story long before that because the rest of the characters were that off as well.
Ooo, I agree on the accent thing, too. It can be done effectively but most of the time it just is so darn distracting that it takes you right out of the story because you're having to puzzle out the phonetics of what poor Rose is trying to say! @_@ ;)
Hmmm, now I need to ponder my own answer... ;) Thanks again! ♥!

Date: 2008-06-04 03:29 am (UTC)I really really hate bad science. In anything. It completely puts me off everything, even some high-budget action movies, such as Ghost Rider. ((NEVER rent/buy IT, It is HORRIBLE!!!))
I like my fantasy to be grounded in reality, please.

Date: 2008-06-04 04:47 am (UTC)I feel the same way about Rose/Doctor/other. I don't think Rose and the Doctor would be able to share each other no matter how much they love Jack. I can and do read fics in which there is OT3 or a hint of it in the summery. It doesn't matter how well written it is it's just not my thing and I doubt it ever will be. It's good to see there is someone else out there like me:)
the fake it crappy silly science is annoying also.
Character acting OCC drives me nuts. As a Martha/Doctor shipper I disagree with you on that part but I can see and respect why you feel that way. And the Doctor would NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER sleep with Jackie is very right.
Bad spelling doesn't bother me a whole lot. It would be the plot calling the kettle black is I did have huge problem with it but stories with no spaces or quote makes " " for when the for talking drive me nuts. One page with no spaces or commas or anything to break it up is hard on the eyes and hard to read. Thus I don't read them.
The teeth thing, yes people can REALLY over use that sometimes.
I've posted mine. I'd be interested to see if any of mine you agree or disagree with.

Date: 2008-06-04 09:34 am (UTC)Did you need to vent? ;)
I agree with you on OT3's, as I explained in my own LJ post - I just don't think they'd share. But whereas you will read them, I don't. In fact, if I stumble into one, I leave as soon as I realise where it's going.
Oh and the accent thing grates on me too. Rose Tyler, is not Eliza Doolittle!

Date: 2008-06-04 09:55 am (UTC)I try not to read OT3 but sometimes I get sucked in before I realize what it is and I've already invested several chapters worth of time and there is a plot mixed in and I want to know how it ends, and I just end up skimming the sex.

Date: 2008-06-04 10:21 am (UTC)Now I'm curious, though - do you think the Crossroads science for getting Rose back was properly explained? It makes sense in my head, I'm not sure I explained it well enough.

Date: 2008-06-06 02:06 pm (UTC)I think there was a believable explanation used in Crossroads if that's what you mean. I wouldn't have kept reading if it hadn't been.
