Chapter Three:  Wrecked

Everywhere I look my home is a disaster area. The main window is smashed to pieces, the furniture overturned, and the kitchen looks like some kind of last stand has been waged there. This is actually pretty normal for our kitchen, so I dismiss that part of it at least.

“Jackie Tyler,” the Doctor calls in a loudly booming voice. “Are you here?”

“Mum!” I cry out adding my voice to his.

I hear a faint thumping noise and follow it, my heart beating as if I am running for my life. There is a loud thud, followed by a crash as the door to the clothes dryer flies open. Out pops Mum’s head, followed by the rest of her as she unwinds and slithers out, coming to rest in an ungainly heap on the floor. Dad is forever saying how limber Mum is, but I’d never have thought she could have fit inside there, even if it did have an extra large drying capacity.

“Mum!”

“Rose!” I run to her, kneel at her side and feel her arms come around me. We hold each other, not even talking for a good few minutes.

“Are they gone?” Mum asks. “Those things, those robots?”

“They’re gone,” assures the Doctor. “Gone from this world and into the Void. You’re safe, Jackie.”

“What about Pete?” she asks looking up at the Doctor. “Do you know what happened to Pete?”

“We came here, first, Mum. I don’t know about Dad. We haven’t heard. So many people…so many people were killed.” I swallow hard, not wanting to think of losing my father.

“You’re sure they’re gone?” Mum asks anxiously still looking around her like she expects one to pop up at any moment.

“We took care of the Cybermen, Jackie. I promise they're gone, them and the Daleks--.” The Doctor stops in mid-sentence looking confused.

“Daleks?” I ask feeling more confused than he looks. “There were Daleks?”

“I…erm…” He pauses and the look on his face really begins to worry me on a day when I've already got more than my fair share of worries. “No?” he says, but it is a question, as if he were asking me.

The feeling of dread, of something not belonging, not being right rises up within me again at his answer. There had been no Daleks, no Daleks since I had destroyed them in a foolish and daring use of the Time Vortex to keep the man I loved safe.

“Something isn’t right here,” the Doctor says.

I am about to agree with him when the phone rings.

Got that one in Doctor. Far more wrong then you know. I really do feel sorry for him for what he will learn.

I've never read this, although I've read your other stuff. What a great start, but oh dear, they've got residual memories haven't they? This is going to be exciting :)

One thing that made me giggle (not a criticsm), in UK our tumble dryers are barely big enough for a bed set, let alone an adult human, I'm assuming Jackie has a TARDIS type tumble dryer- bigger on the inside ;0)
(honestly though, its not a criticism :) )

Well, now they realize something's wrong. And Jackie was in a dryer? That's fantastic.

He'll be able to face things with Rose by his side.

Some, yeah. Rose more than him at this point. The extra capacity dryers are pretty big, and Pete's an inventor, so Jackies's got the top of the line model. *grins*

It's a good hiding place, one where most people wouldn't think to look. *laughs*

Agreed just sad knowing the extra burden this Doctor will have to live with.
