Chapter Thirteen: They're Still Here
The front door slams open and my mum closes it shut frantically, leaning hard against it. “What is it, Mum?” I ask instantly on my feet and rushing to her side.
“You said they were all gone!” Mum says looking at the Doctor accusingly. “But there are still some here.” Mum’s eyes are wide with fright.
“Still some what?” I ask dreading the answer.
“Those robot things, those, those Cybermen!”
“But they went into the Void. We saw them,” I protest.
The Doctor stands up and I can tell his mind is racing. “Oh, of course!”
“What?” I ask.
“The Void would only suck in the ones from the parallel world.”
“Parallel world? Have you gone completely mad?” Mum asks. “Not but that it wouldn’t be a terribly short trip.”
“Mum,” I warn.
“No. Let me think this out. The reason the Void worked to suck them through was because they had Void stuff all over them. But any of them completely manufactured here, not from parts brought over, they wouldn’t have gotten sucked in. That’s why your dad didn't get pulled through.”
“But,” and I bite my lip. “I’ve never been to a parallel world,” I say. “And I almost got sucked in." Well, fell in.
“I don’t know, Rose. Somehow, some way, you’ve been exposed to the Void. I can’t remember how or why, but you were. You wouldn’t almost have gone in if you hadn’t,” he told me.
“What's this all about?” Mum demands.
“I’ve lost some memories,” I say simply. “And I’ve got some that don’t belong to me. The Doctor as well.”
Mum shakes her head. “We’ll sort that out later. What are you going to do about the Cybermen?”
“I don’t know. Torchwood is destroyed. Rose, does this world have a U.N.I.T. division?”
I nod my head. “Yeah, we found out about them at Christmas,” I say.
“Maybe they can help. Though they’re probably already out there doing mop up,” the Doctor muses.
“Either way, we’ll find them,” I tell him.
“We? Rose, you can’t go out in that! I won’t let you!” Mum sets her face stubbornly.
“Mum, I can’t let him go out there on his own!” I am equally determined. “He needs me!” On my last three words I feel a strange dilation and contraction of the world around me. It is so fast that on a normal day I might not have even noticed it. “He needs me,” I repeat less forcefully, this time seeing a faint flash of gold behind my eyes. “I’m not leaving him on his own.”
I kiss my mother on the cheek and move her bodily out of the way. “We’ll sort it, Jackie,” the Doctor promises.
“You better bring her back to me!” Mum screeches as we go out the door.
“I always do,” he tells her. Then the door shuts firmly behind us and we venture out into the rubble.
