Chapter Twenty-seven:  To Love and Honor

“I can’t believe this day is here,” Jackie Tyler told her daughter as Rose sat before the mirror. It had been three months since the Doctor and Rose had visited and it had gone by so quickly. And today her daughter would marry an alien. She smiled, thinking how much that idea would have scared her just a few years ago.

Rose smiled up at her mother. “I know.”

“And you’re happy?” Jackie asked already knowing the answer, but asking it anyway.

“I am, Mum.”

“Even if he’ll be left all alone when you die long before he does?” she asked gently.

“I won’t.” She turned in her chair to look at her mother. “Mum, something happened to me, something to do with the Time Vortex and the TARDIS. I’m going to live at least 500 years, my brain’s bigger and I have two hearts like him now. I’m a little more than human.”

“So not only is my daughter marrying an alien, she’s become one?” Jackie sighed. “Not that it matters. You’re still my Rose. You’ll always be my Rose.”

“So you’ll always recognize me no matter how much I’ve changed? You’ll know me?” Rose sounded just a little frightened of her mother’s answer. Jackie remembered the conversation they’d had long ago, before Rose had lost the Doctor.

“You’ll always be Rose. I know that now. You’re heart will always be the same. Or hearts, rather. You’re my daughter no matter what.”

“I love you, Mum.”

“I love you too, sweetheart.”

“There’s something else,” Rose admitted. Her mother nodded at her to go on. “The Doctor and I, we’re biologically compatible now. We’ll be able to have children together.”

Jackie smiled. “Grandbabies? Oh, Rose.”

“It’s everything I’ve ever wanted; ever since I knew I loved him. I’m getting everything I’ve ever dreamed of. It’s worth everything I went through. I love him so much. And he loves me.”

“I know.” Jackie looked down at her watch. “It’s almost time.”

Rose stood up and turned around, hugging her mum tightly. She took one last look at herself in the mirror. She had never been so beautiful. There was a knock on the door and Jackie went to answer it.

“Can I talk to her?”

“Of course, you can.”

Jackie let Mickey into the room and left them alone. “Look at you,” said Mickey. “Still the prettiest girl I know.”

“Don’t you dare make me cry, Mickey,” Rose said with a mock threatening glare.

“I’m so happy for you, Rose. I’m so glad you get your happily ever after.”

“Even though it’s not with you?” she asked gently.

“I love you, Rose. I always will. You’re my best friend and you were my first love. But you belong with the Doctor. Any fool can see that, even Mickey the Idiot.” He smiled, long past being offended at that moniker. “I’ll let you in on a little secret, though.” He grinned at her.

“You’ve met someone!”

Mickey nodded. “She’s pretty special Rose. Her name is Saree Goodwin and she works with me at Torchwood. She’s the first woman I’ve met here that I can see a future with.”

“I’m so glad, Mickey.” Rose reached out and hugged him tightly. “And I love you. You know that? I’ll always love you.” His head nodded against her shoulder.

“Are you ready?” he asked her.

“I’m ready.”

Rose and Mickey stood outside a pair of ornately carved doors that looked like ivory. Rose had never seen this room before. She thought she’d managed to find every room in the TARDIS, but she’d been mistaken. The doors opened and they stepped through. Rose gasped in surprise.

It had to be the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. It was like stepping into a garden, with a mixture of Earth flowers she recognized and alien plants she did not. Everything was heartstoppingly beautiful from the dark pink bramble roses and black-eyed Susans to the beautiful silver and crystal trees. A light breeze made the crystal leaves touch each other and they emitted a sound like little bells. Miniature Japanese maple trees were tucked up against the base of the larger trees, their leaves a flaming red.

Ahead of them was a waterfall, a stream ambling from its base only to disappear into some brilliant purple hollyhocks and emerge a bit later into a pond surrounded by colorful caladium, gladiolas and lilies. Everywhere she looked she saw a riot of color, yet everything seemed to blend together without clashing, even when it clearly should not have.

Her eyes moved up to the skyline which blazed a glorious orange, as if at sunset. She could not have imagined anything this beautiful and she’d seen a lot of beauty in the universe. Blazing yellow coreopsis and brilliant blue delphiniums lined the pathway, which was made up of abalone shells that crunched softly under their feet.

My gift,” the TARDIS said in her head. Rose felt awed. She’d never heard words before.

“Thank you, dear one,” she whispered back to the much loved ship.

As they emerged around the corner of the pathway she saw her family, her friends, and more importantly her Doctor. Her breath caught as she looked at him. He was dressed in a silver suit with familiar pinstripes and at his neck was knotted a brilliant blue silk tie. She glanced down at his feet halfway expecting to see his white trainers, but was pleasantly surprised to see ordinary dress shoes. He was amazingly gorgeous.

His eyes caught sight of her and he stared at her in awe. Rose had kept her hair down and wore a circlet of seed pearls woven with baby’s breath, some of which were a normal white and the rest of which were the same brilliant blue as his tie. White and blue ribbons wove through her lovely blond hair.

The Doctor’s eyes moved from her face to her dress and she saw him gasp. The dress was gorgeous in its simplicity. Two little straps held up a fitted white bodice that sparkled with tiny crystals minutely tinted blue. A brilliant blue silk sash was tied at her waist and hung down to the hemline in the back. The skirt of the dress was white silk with a fine layer of Champagne lace on top. It fell to just below mid-calf.

Even the dainty little white shoes she wore were a work of art, studded with the same lightly blue tinted crystals that sparkled on the bodice of her dress. “I’ve never seen anything more beautiful,” she breathed as Mickey handed her off to the Doctor.

“Nor have I,” said the Doctor, but he wasn’t looking at their surroundings. He had eyes only for her.

Jack stood before them and cleared his throat bringing their attention back to the little stone altar he stood behind. “Join hands,” he told them and they turned sideways so that they were facing each other, his hands holding hers firmly as if he had no intention of ever letting them go.

Mickey stood at her back and Donna stood at the Doctor’s. Rose’s eyes flicked over to where her parents and siblings stood, with Martha beside them and then back into the warmth of the Doctor’s lovely brown eyes.

“Who gives this woman to this man today?”

“Her mother and I,” said Pete Tyler.

“You bet we do,” said Jackie and everyone laughed.

So much of the wedding was a blur from that point but what stood out were the vows, for even though they had decided previously that he would use the alias he used on Earth, he surprised her with more than that.  He spoke his real name.

“I, Andevorantil Jonathon Smith, take you Rose Marion Tyler to be my most beloved wife. I will have you and hold you,” Rose grinned at his naughty turn of phrase, “for all of time and in all of space. I will love and adore you and keep you safe from all harm. I will honor you above all others and never let you go.” With that he placed a pendant around her neck, one with the seal of Rassilon on it. “You are my life mate, as you are my soul mate, as you own my hearts forevermore.”

She smiled up at him and felt a happy thrill as she said his real name, attached to his false human one. “I Rose Marion Tyler, take you Andevorantil Jonathon Smith to be my most beloved husband. I will have you and hold you,” she grinned wickedly at him, “for all of time and in all of space. I will love and adore you and keep you safe,” she emphasized the you, “From all harm. I will honor you above all others and never let you go.” She turned to Mickey and he handed her the Doctor’s ring, with the seal of Rassilon on it. She slipped it onto the third finger of his left hand. “You are my life mate, as you are my soul mate, as you own my hearts forevermore.”

Jack grinned happily at his two friends then motioned Martha to come up to the front where she and Jack sang a beautiful song about love overcoming all obstacles to bring them to this moment in time.

When they were done, Jack finished the ceremony and said, “I pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride.” The Doctor took Rose into his arms, kissing her gently but rather thoroughly and when he let go she was just a little bit dizzy.

“I now present to you Doctor and Mrs. Tyler,” Jack said. Rose turned to him in surprise then looked over at the Doctor who nodded.

“I always said the universe needed more Tylers,” the Doctor said. “And I know how proud you are of your family name. It seemed right. Especially since I have no attachment to the name Smith.” Rose smiled happily.

Later after they had cut the cake that had been decorated with a base of white and an intricate array of blue and silver flowers and fed each other little nibbles, the Doctor pulled her close against him.

“Wife,” he said.

“Husband,” she returned.

“How long are you going to stay with me?” He asked, eyes sparkling.

“Forever,” she grinned.

Yet another beautiful chapter - thanks for that. And yet another beautiful quote (on of my favourites from the show):

“How long are you going to stay with me?” - “Forever.”

*big sigh*
