Heat
The air was heavy with the fumes of sulfur, causing Rose to sputter and cough as she tried to adapt to the reek. Oppressive heat pushed in on them, almost with tangible force, making breathing that much harder. The Doctor pulled a capsule out of his pocket and snapped it open under Rose’s nose. “Breathe,” he told her and she inhaled the slightly sweet scent. Immediately something entered her nose and it cleared her nostrils of the stench.
“What was that?” she asked him curiously.
“It’s a sort of filtering device. A tiny little membrane, that’ll still allow you to smell and taste, but the worst of the stink will be gone.”
“Why’s it stink so bad?” she wanted to know as the Doctor took out the parchment with the first task on it and studied the map in one corner.
“The planet’s a veritable hotbed of geothermic activity. Mud pots, hot springs, geysers, volcanic action, you name it,” he told her without looking up.
“But we’re in a jungle. A tropical rain forest if I don’t miss my guess.”
“Not all ecosystems operate the same way, Rose. This one thrives in muck and the planet’s own heat, and less from the sun’s rays. That’s why so many of the plants are more blue than green. Not a lot of chlorophyll. Or what passes for chlorophyll off of Earth,” he explained.
“Ah,” said Rose. “So do you know what the planet is called? Calling it planet of the Drayguins is kind of irritating me.”
“Guinyoc’altinish’morclinia-morashnatil,” he said, the long word flowing musically off his tongue.
“Planet of the Drayguins it is,” Rose said sourly.
The Doctor laughed at her expression. “Or we could just call it Guinyoc. Come on. It’s this way.” They began their trek to the west. “I’m afraid the TARDIS landed quite a ways away from our destination. I tried to convince her to go closer but she’s mad at me again.”
“Why’s she mad at you? What’d you do?” Rose asked.
“I didn’t do anything!” he protested.
Rose turned her head and gave him a look. “She’s miffed at me because of last night.”
“What? Why? She can’t want us not to be together. She’s the one who gave me the book,” Rose said. “And the supplements.”
“No, it’s not that. She’s mad because I wouldn’t wear the tie she picked out for me last night,” he said.
“You? In a tie?” Rose snorted.
“Exactly. She let it go last night but she was annoyed with me this morning. Made my hot water run out too soon in the shower and it never runs out unless she wants it to. And she still hasn’t given me back my…” he trailed off.
“Your what?”
“Nothing,” he said firmly and Rose decided not to press him.
“What, she gave you that book?” he asked, skipping back to their previous topic of conversation.
“Well, not exactly gave it to me, but encouraged me to read it when I found it. Hey, you mentioned the author was a time agent. How do you know about them? Did you ever meet one?” asked Rose.
“Never met the one who wrote that book, but he was infamous. From our original universe, not this one, and he gave time traveler’s a bad name. This was before the Time War.” His voice thickened on the last two words. Rose reached out and took his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Can’t count the number of times I turned up on a planet and got run off when they found out I was a time traveler because Mr. Sex on Wheels had been there first,” complained the Doctor.
“Do you often go around telling people you’re a time traveler?” Rose asked. “I mean, the other Doctor didn’t do that. Not often anyway.”
The Doctor shrugged. “It happened enough that I would have liked to get my hands on the guy and give him a permanent dose of pheromone blockers,” the Doctor said. His eyes narrowed. "The hard way."
Rose giggled. “So then this probably isn’t a good time to tell you that I met the author?”
He stopped dead and whirled on her. “Tell me you didn’t sleep with the man.”
“No, I didn’t,” she said quietly. “You wouldn’t let me. Or the other you, anyway. Well, not a question of let, really. You put the fear of the Eternals into him. You were rather possessive of me in that body. And it was this version of you, too. I didn’t really want him anyway. Only wanted you. Just flirted with him to try to get you to pay attention, notice I was a woman.”
“I’m sure I noticed, Rose,” he said with a sidelong glance that draped his eyes across her body.
“Not that Jack didn’t try to get me into bed. Several times.”
“Jack?” He raised an eyebrow at the name.
“Jack’s the name he was going by at the time he travelled with us. I recognized his picture on the author’s page.”
“He let that…man onto my TARDIS?” The Doctor was outraged.
“Just about booted him off when he tried to seduce the TARDIS, too,” Rose said with an irreverent grin.
“That’s not funny,” said the Doctor.
“Other you didn’t think it was either,” she said trying to keep herself from smirking at his expression. “The TARDIS didn’t seem to mind. But, you know, she wouldn’t let him get too near me, either. He only ever kissed me the once.”
“He kissed you?” The Doctor’s expression turned thunderous and he hunched in on himself.
“Relax, Doctor. He only kissed me good-bye. If it makes you feel any better, he kissed you good-bye the exact same way,” Rose told him.
“That doesn’t make me feel any better!” snapped the Doctor.
“Well, he may have bedded thousands of life forms, Doctor, but he couldn’t even touch your skill in kissing,” Rose told him softly, stroking her hand down his arm. “No one can.” She reached up and pulled at the back of his neck, bringing his head down to hers and brushing her lips across his once, twice, three times before settling firmly against his mouth.
He pushed gently at the seal of her lips and she opened for him without hesitation. He took his time tasting her, savoring her sweetness, and seemed to be delighting in her response to him as her hands fisted in his t-shirt and pulled him closer into her body.
She could have stayed that way all day, kissing him, enjoying his exquisite technique, but she forced herself to break away from him. His mouth followed hers, seeking a second kiss and she didn’t deny him, didn’t want to. Her hands crept up under the back of his t-shirt and she felt him walking her backwards until her back was against a tree.
His body pressed insistently against hers, she could feel the swell of his erection, and she was gloriously trapped between it and the tree. Her mind clouded and her common sense was beginning to desert her when the sky opened up and let loose a deluge of water.
Rose squealed and danced away from the Doctor. Fortunately the water was warm. It had only been the unexpected shock of it that had made her cry out. He laughed at her and after a moment she joined him. “Wouldn’t think you’d find the weather disrupting your ardor so amusing, Doctor,” she told him.
He shrugged. “There’s something to be said for soaking wet shirts, Rose,” he said, his eyes focused firmly on her breasts. She looked down and noted that the shirt had practically gone see-through in its drenching. Her nipples rose under his gaze and she crossed her arms across her chest to hide her response to him.
The Doctor reached out and pulled at her arms. “Don’t,” he said softly. “I like looking.” His voice was dark and intense and she let her arms fall to her sides.
“Why is it,” Rose asked in a shaking voice, “that every time I go anywhere with you I end up soaking wet?”
He licked his lips and the look he gave her in response to her question was utterly filthy. “I didn’t mean that!” she said in exasperation. “I meant, falling in the river and now getting stuck in a rainstorm.”
“I can smell it, Rose,” he told her.
“Smell what?” she said.
“That you’re soaking wet,” he said challengingly.
“Oh, really?” she asked putting her hands on her hips. “In this stink? You can smell that?”
“It’s very distinctive to my senses, Rose. I’ve locked on to your scent.” He ran his tongue over his lips again and stepped towards her, reaching for the snap on her cargo pants.
She took a step back. “Not. Now.”
“Why?”
“Because we have a Quest to complete. Stay on task, Doctor,” she told him sternly.
“You kissed me,” he said.
She sighed. “Kissed you, yeah. I wasn’t the one banging you up against a tree though, was I?”
“Didn’t hear you complaining,” he said with a sulky look on his face.
“And you won’t do. Not when you kiss me like that. But now is not the time to be taking things any further.” The rain stopped as suddenly as it had started. “Now come on.” Rose turned on her heel, took one step forward and promptly tripped over a tree root.
“Are you okay?” the Doctor asked walking around in front of her and looking down at her in concern.
“Only bruised my pride,” Rose said with a groan and clambered to her knees.
“Ah, well, then,” the Doctor said with a hand on his zip, “Since you’re down there…”
Rose glared up at him furiously and blushed from head to toe. “Is this seriously all you think I’m good for, Doctor?” she demanded.
“No, I don’t!” Realizing he might have taken the sexual aggression too far the Doctor backed off. “Sorry, Rose,” he said. She rose to her feet, ignoring the hand he held out to help her. She strode past him and with one annoyed look over her shoulder made her way into the jungle ahead of him.
For the next hour the Doctor castigated himself. He recognized that he’d pushed Rose too far too fast. He’d let his common sense be overtaken by his desire and assumed a…right that he hadn’t yet earned. Pushed for more than she was willing to offer him and if he was any judge, royally ticked her off as well. Now he’d be lucky if she’d kiss him like that again today. Or quite possibly tomorrow. If she was really angry she might stop kissing him altogether and then what would he do?
And what about sleeping? What if she didn’t want to be in his arms tonight? What about the skin hunger? Could he deal with the pain of not touching her? He’d have to if it was what she wanted. He’d have to try. But what if he couldn’t? What if despite himself he was driven to her and she wanted nothing to do with him?
He cursed himself. He couldn’t help how he felt about Rose. He wanted her desperately and he knew that his hormones were still under full control from the serum. This was more, so much more, so far beyond anything that had been planned. He wanted Rose for Rose. He’d like to think he couldn’t help it, but he knew better. He’d deliberately pushed her past her comfort level with him.
He’d been right when he’d told himself he’d make his own mistakes with Rose and didn’t need any help from his other self. He’d just really botched it. What if she didn’t want to be around him anymore? What if she decided that when they completed the task and got out of this universe that he needed to take her home? What if she went back to her nice safe little life with her nice safe little boyfriend that she wasn’t in love with but would be happy to have a house, a dog, and 2.5 kids with?
If she wasn’t around him anymore she wouldn’t react to his pheromones. She could survive without him. She could do it very easily if he were gone. But he was hooked on her and it had nothing to do with the damn hormones. How could he have been so foolish? She’d given him limits, very clearly laid out her choices, and all he did was ignore them and push and push past them, always going for what he wanted, not listening to her, not caring that his actions might bother her or hurt her or make her feel like he didn’t think her feelings were worth something.
He was so deep into his brooding that he didn’t realize Rose had stopped and dropped back to walk beside him until he felt her small hand slip into his and lace through his fingers. “I tried to stay mad,” she said in a small voice, “but I missed you.”
An enormous weight left his shoulders. “I’m sorry, Rose.” His fingers tightened convulsively against hers and she hissed as he crushed her hand. “Sorry, about that, too,” he said.
“Maybe I overreacted a bit,” she told him.
“But you didn’t, Rose. I deserved it. I keep pushing you for more than what you want to give.”
Rose sighed. “It isn’t that I don’t want to give it to you, Doctor,” she said hesitantly. “It’s that I do.” His hearts leapt. “But I’m not ready. Up here.” She tapped her head. “I’m just not there yet. And you come after me all gorgeous and lusty and wanting me and it makes it so hard…”
“Tell me about it,” he grumbled.
“No cheek,” she said sharply. He could feel her pull herself together. “And I don’t want to get hurt.”
“Rose, I swear, I’ll be careful with your heart. You mean so much to me, already you do, and I--.”
“That isn’t what I meant, Doctor. Physically. I mean there’s a lot of pleasure sometimes in a little bit of pain. Like with the biting you did last night.” And her hand crept up to finger the bite mark on her shoulder. “But I don’t want to get torn apart and until I’ve been on those supplements for two weeks I won’t have any defense against you.”
“Rose, I wasn’t…I just wanted a blow job,” he said flustered.
“I do that and I’ll be rolling over for you in no time. I know how my body works, Doctor. So please, just wait. Let me lead until I feel safe,” she said.

Is there supposed to be something between the "Nothing" line and the next? It doesn't make sense in context.
Great chapter, though. The conversation about Jack was priceless! Given the revelations of the previous night, though, I'm thinking Rose might have to be pretty careful about the blowjob thing . . . could get messy.
