Not So Secret Identity

“Don’t turn around.” Rose freezes at the voice behind her, every one of her senses springing onto high alert.   There is no time to go for her weapon, though every bit of her training is urging her to grab it, whirl around and take her chances at the unseen enemy in the dark. Her mind is racing as she tries to figure out what enemy would dare try to breach the security of her father’s home beneath the window of her little brother. Tony! No, she has to face this. If someone’s gone after Tony and she lets them go she’ll never forgive herself.

She pulls her weapon and turns in one smooth motion and stops dead as she realizes that there is a person hanging from the tree behind her. A very familiar person. “Rooooose,” whines the voice. “This is embarrassing. I told you not to turn around.”

“Probably not the best order to give an armed Torchwood operative, Doctor.” She reaches into her pocket with her free hand and pulls out her mini-torch, shining it on the figure suspended from the tree.

“You can put the weapon away,” he says dryly, squinting his eyes in the harsh light from her torch.

“I wouldn’t have pulled it if you hadn’t scared the daylights out of me. Now, do you care to tell me what you’re doing hanging upside down from a tree outside my little brother’s window in the middle of the night?” she demands putting her gun back in her holster.

“It’s Tony’s fault,” he says grudgingly.

“How is this, any of this, my four-year-old brother’s fault?” she asks arching her eyebrows.

“He said that Spiderman was better than Superman.”

Rose snorts. “And I’m sure that that all leads to something that will make some kind of sense in that strange Time Lord mind of yours that led to you being stuck like you are.”

“Of course,” he says with great dignity.

“I’ll get a knife and cut you down.”

“Don’t you even want to know why Superman is better than Spiderman?” he asks.

Rose sighs. “Not particularly.”

“But Rooooose—.”

“Fine,” she cuts him off. She’s too tired and he’s obviously working up to a full on whinge. “Why is Superman better than Spiderman?”

“Because he’s from a great and powerful planet that blew up. He lost everything and he came to Earth and adopted it as his second home. He made a new family and he got to run around with super powers saving the universe and nothing could stop him, not even the—not even Lex Luthor and—.”

“Kryptonite,” Rose says abruptly. “And Daleks.”

“Rose,” he says with a startled gasp.

You are not Superman, Doctor. You never were. Anyway, Tony’s right. Spiderman is better. He’s a genetically modified human being who was created through no act of his own. He’s not all powerful. He has to depend on his wits to keep him alive and his innate sense of justice. He knows that with great power comes great responsibility and he does not just sweep in to save the day and then fly away and leave the cleaning up to someone else. He makes sure the job is fully done. If you, this you, should identify with anyone, it’s Spiderman. And Spiderman is my favorite,” she tells him.

She steps closer to him and takes his face in her hands. “Besides, Superman always has to give up the girl and Spiderman gets to do this.” She leans forward and kisses him. It feels weird with his face upside down like this, but it’s interesting and she’s always wanted to do it ever since she saw it in the first Spiderman movie. By the time she’s done kissing him he’s making strange little whimpering sounds in the back of his throat.

“Now shall I cut you down?” she asks.

“The sonic screwdriver is in my right trouser pocket,” he says. Rose slides her hand up his torso and into his trousers. “Erm…Rose, I think you may be very well aware of the fact that that’s – that’s – that’s not my pocket, but I feel I should, oh my, point it out to you in case…you know in case you were simply – simply off course and needed your, erm, navigation corrected.”

“Nope. My navigation’s just fine and you’re right. That’s not your pocket. And this isn’t your sonic screwdriver either,” she says wickedly before withdrawing her hand and putting it in his pocket and retrieving the proper tool. “Setting?” she asks.

“Five,” he answers shakily.

“Five? It’s always 1,532 or something,” she mutters as she sets the device.

“1,532? Don’t be silly. Why would you need to bake a single chocolate chip cookie right now?” he asks.

Rose laughs. “Seriously?” He winks at her. She aims the sonic screwdriver up at the rope and it slowly cuts through it. A moment later he falls towards the ground, neatly somersaulting onto his feet as he impacts.

“All right, Peter Parker, let’s get you and your secret identity to bed.”

“Is Peter Parker a new nickname for my—.”

“No, Doctor,” she says in exasperation. “It’s Spiderman’s real identity.” She ushers him into the house and up to their bedroom. They’re staying here temporarily while their new house is being painted. “You going to tell me what you were doing up in a tree outside Tony’s window in the first place?

“No,” he says. He looks a bit guilty but she decides to let it go. As they slip into bed he asks, “So does Peter Parker wear brainy specs? Because Clark Kent wears brainy specs. And he can fly. And he can write a mean article—.”

“Peter’s a photographer and a picture is worth a thousand words.”

“But—.” She shuts him up with a kiss then breaks away with a huge yawn.

“You’re better than any superhero anyway,” she says snuggling into his shoulder and nestling her head in the crook of his arm.

“How’s that then?”

“Because you’re my hero just the way you are.”

Prompt was:  10/Rose, established relationship.
The Doctor steps in a trap in the woods and is dangling by his feet.
Rose has to let him down but she wants to try to do the kiss from Spiderman 1 first.
