Just got word from Best Buy that my beloved Sony Vaio is considered totalled (I think they call it a junk out) and they are going to replace it with something comparable or give me credit for an upgrade if that is what I want to do instead. Dang it, I want my baby back. It had the best keyboard I have ever had, which may not sound like a big deal, but it really is. Ease of key strokes is one of the major things for me because I type so much. Plus I just renewed my anti-virus and I don't think that is transferrable. Grumble, grumble, grumble. I should be jumping up and down because NEW! FREE! COMPUTER! But I just hate change when it comes to hardware. Software I will jump on the band wagon for. And also, my one time use Office won't be transferable, so I will have to make them give me one. Or buy the physical copy, which can be installed on five computers, I think. I mean in succession, not at once. Maybe I should do that anyway. *sighs* I am really, really, really glad now that I paid extra for the super deluxe maintenance agreement.

I will go in after my appointment tomorrow and see what they have. I hope I can find something I like.

They told me my computer was a lost cause. I took it home, slaved the hard drive myself and got all of my lost stuff back, no thanks to those idiots.

Still, yay on the new computer.

Give it a short while to get your new one all sorted out and it'll be all "OMG! Shiny new!" *g*

I must admit that I do agree with you 100% about the keyboard though. I've never found a laptop that has a really good one.

I'd be surprised if your anti-virus contract was not transferable if you email them and explain BTW.

Urgh, Best Buy. But at least they're willing to replace with a new one - and Sony still makes Vaios (that's what I've got) so hopefully the new one's keyboard will be just as nice.

Which antivirus do you use? I've been using eSet for the last two years and I've never had a problem (virus-wise, anyway). If there's a MicroCenter near you, you can get it much cheaper in multi-packs, where you buy four subscriptions at once for a quarter the cost, and then you're set for the next four years. (I actually have to go and do that before we leave, since our subscriptions will run out in about two months.

Switch to Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org/). It's free and does everything that Microsoft Office does and more. I switched about halfway through college, and haven't looked back since. It can open pretty much any file you can think of, and you can save in any file format you want. It was handy for professors that only wanted a certain file type.

Well, fortunately I didn't lose anything. I'd only busted the screen so had hooked it up to a monitor and transferred everything off before I took it in to them, so no files were lost.

I don't blame you. I'd probably do that, too!

Yeah, I'm sure I'll like it in a very short amount of time. I loved my Vaio's keyboard. It was the best I'd ever had, short of one Toshiba ages ago, that turned out to be complete crap otherwise.

Yeah, I will email Kaspersky if they don't put on a new one at Best Buy.

With the amount you write, that doesn't surprise me at all! Yeah, they will. They said I could get the same type of Vaio but the new model year or I could get anything in the same price range, or I could upgrade to something more expensive with the replacement amount of the old one discounted against the new. I don't need something more expensive, I just want a good keyboard with a ten-key pad and the newest version of Office.

I use Kaspersky. It's been the best anti-virus I've ever owned, isn't a space hog like Norton or McAfee, and never fails to update itself automatically like Avanquest. Never had a virus with it.

I completely agree about the keyboard. Ironically for me the keyboard on my Sony wasn't that comfortable or awesome once I got the Dell. It's keyboard just feels so much better to me. Hubby now uses the Sony.
I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you will find something you like.

yay for new hardware, but I totally understand what you mean about keyboards because I'm the same way. I can't use hubby's new super-duper laptop for long because I simply hate the keyboard it has *sigh*

good luck with finding something

It depends on the Sony, too. Not all of the keyboards are feel the same, even when they look the same. Thanks, I hope I find something I like, too. And maybe YM will load on the new one!

Thanks, I hope I find something I like as much as the old one.

Oh, that would be awesome. I miss our chats. Oh, and yeah, that's true. My Sony just had something different, like the keys seemed like they were further apart or something.
Anyway, good luck

I have Open Office. I don't like it as well. It doesn't have all of the bells and whistles that I have come to rely on. Actually, I could put up with it if they'd do a running word count at the bottom of the page instead of making you go in and physically click stuff to get one. I want to know at a glance. It's my biggest pet peeve.

Good luck with this. In the next year or so we'll have to be replacing our desktop and I just dread the idea. It's SO frustrating!!!!! I feel your pain!

Try libreoffice. It is available for pcs as well as macs and it has a word count. I got it when the free suite I got for my mac started charging for it.
