Chapter Twenty-one: Home
“Rose?” it grates out. “Rose?”
“What?” I manage when I recover from my shock, but my heart does not stop pounding in my ears. I feel the adrenaline dump into my system and every human instinct I have screams for me to run. I stay still.
“Rose? Send me home. I want to go home.”
“Home?”
“You promised me, Rose. You promised me.” The Dalek’s voice is broken. I can hear pain in it. I can hear suffering. I can hear…the desire for mercy?
“I didn’t…” I manage to say.
“You will do as I say,” it says reverting to type in desperation. “You promised! You promised! You will send me home or you will be exterminated.”
“The only one getting exterminated around here will be you,” the Doctor says shoving me behind him.
“You are the Doctor. You are an enemy of the Dalek.”
“Daleks,” said the Doctor. “I am an enemy of the Daleks.”
“I am alone. There are no Daleks. Only Dalek. Only…Me.”
I hear the Doctor’s startled gasp and I know why. Daleks don’t have a concept of individuality, not unless they are like the emperor or the Cult of Skaro. The Cult of Skaro I have never met, but the Doctor, my Doctor, had told me of them shortly after the game station.
“Is it part of the Cult of Skaro?” I ask.
The machine answers before the Doctor can. “They are dead. They are long dead. There is only I. One. Me.”
“Why do you want to go home? Why do you think I can send you there?”
“I am…” It stopped for so long I did not think it would finish, but finally he did. “Tired…of…killing.”
“We’re not going to believe that!” the Doctor shouted at him. “You just threatened to exterminate Rose if she didn’t send you home.”
Again the silence dragged on before it spoke. “It is habit to kill. I am alone. Different. I want to go home.”
“Skaro is gone,” said the Doctor. “It doesn’t exist anymore. It died in the Time War. Rose couldn’t send you there if she wanted to. And she doesn’t have that kind of power.”
“She has the power,” it grates out.
“But I don’t.” My protest is almost sad.
“I must go home. I cannot live like this. I am an abomination. I feel.” He let his force field drop. I realize suddenly I am thinking of him as he and not it. Seconds after the force field falls a bazooka comes flying at him, too close to us, too close to him. I raise my hand. It freezes. Everything freezes. Except for me. I burn like the sun.

The saga of Alt!Ten and Alt!Rose is interesting: it seems as if their history is different from our Ten and Rose, even leaving out that they are not each other's original partners and may not be in the universe either of them came from. I like the way they're drawn to each other, both knowing something isn't quite right, but wanting what the other has.
