This New Show I'm Watching

So I've been watching this new U.K. show called Demons and I rather like it even though it is a shameless rip off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, right down to the Watcher--oh, wait, that's Smiter--named Rupert. His last name even starts with a G. Okay, it's Galvin and not Giles, but come on! And we have our requisite unrequited love/best friend in Xander, oh, wait, her name is Ruby. Sorry. And the role of Buffy is played by a Luke Van Helsing. Seriously. Van Helsing. There's a Mina Harker, too, in the lovely role of Angel/Cordelia. Oh, yes. No sexually confused witches or short werewolves or bleached soulful vamps with crazy girlfriends, but give them time.

Despite the fact that it is a shameless rip off, it's very watchable. It fills the young (read high school era, not college years) Buffy void nicely. And young Christian Cooke makes a very pretty, fit Luke. Actually, everyone on the show is so pretty you'd think it was an American made show.

Ruby, Luke, Rupert, and Mina

See?  Pretty.  Plus, and here's the best part, the Smiter/Watcher guy is played by Philip Glenister. That's DCI Gene Hunt from Life on Mars. The U.K. version, not the American remake. That man makes me get growly in a way that normally is only brought up by a certain man with the last name of Eccleston.  It is weird hearing him speak with an American accent, but if Buffy is British, than Giles must, it stands to reason, be American.

I admit it is entirely mindless but there are times when you just really want that in a show. Mindless and young and fun. And it reminds me of just how much I miss Buffy since it's been gone. Oh, and I feel perfectly okay with allowing my twelve year old to watch it so far. No sex, no real swearing, lots of good old fashioned adventure and good quality acting. Actually, if my almost nine-year-old wants to watch it, I think it's safe for him, too. All in all, I'm looking forward to the final two episodes and yet again wishing all U.K. shows were at least like DW and Torchwood and did double the normal number of eps.

So. Yum.

I'd been seeing entries in other comms about this show but I had no idea what it was about. British version of Buffy? Hmmm

Is it in the first season or has it been on for a while?

I am watching that too and I am enjoying it. I believe it is done by the same people who did Hex and I was addicted to that show. I adore Phillip Glenister and thought he was absolutely amazing in Life on Mars but his attempt at an American accent is really bad. I don't know why they even put that in. But other then that I find the show fun. Cheesy but fun. I love UK TV.

yeah i'm not really sure why they felt they had to do an american, but maybe it's something to do with VH? not sure *shrug* i love philip too, it's wierd hearing him, but like hugh laurie, i'll sorta get used to it (i still love hugh's normal voice tho lol)

I had to check this one out just to hear PG doing an American accent and it's definitely kind of a O_O moment at first, isn't it? :D But I just adore the man (there's obviously something similar between he and the certain Mr. Eccleston, hm? :D ) and I've been enjoying the show so far. :D

I had to laugh, I realized the other day that one of my friends in Australia spends all her time trying to get her hands on American shows and I spend mine trying to get a hold of UK ones, lol! I don't know why they can't just find a way to let everybody in the world watch whatever show, it would certainly make things a lot easier! :D ♥!

Hmm might look into it. Though I've gotta agree re: the number of episodes. What is it with the rest of the world and their short series?! It seems fairly standard around the world to have between 6-12 episodes, with a solid year between! It reminds me to thank American TV for having 22 episode seasons...and our no-more-than-5-month-long breaks.

[identity profile] morgaine-nicely.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
22 episode seasons? what shows are you watching???? LOL
i haven't seen shows go thru a full season like they used to since like oh.....1989 maybe....@.@
i miss the starting in sept running thru dec-break for holidays-back on in jan-ish and running til mar/apr.
THAT was the good days! :)
now this BS with shows like stargate doing a half season, then a "fall mid season finale" is just crazy, or worse, BSG going a full YEAR argh! course some of that was due to writer's friggin strike....
anyways...i digress :)
plus now they've got shows on thru the summer, used to be all reruns thru summer mostly, so i never remember when my shows are coming on, i have shows that start and then others end about same time. why do they make it so confusing...oh yeah....marketing and commercialism! lol

The actress on the right looks familiar, was she in Hex?

[identity profile] amberfocus.livejournal.com 2009-02-11 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's not the girl who played Ella but it looks a lot like her. The girl who played Ella does have a guest role on one of the episodes, though.

I'll have to check it out! ITV has had quite a few shows that I've liked so I'm optimistic. Thank you for the recc!

It's ok, really bugs me that Gene Hunt has an american accent but its ok for mindless tv. As far as i'm aware its not getting great ratings.

(The girl who plays Mina has been in Survivors and a Sarah Waters adaptation called Affinity)

You know, I haven't watched it yet, is it any good?

I've been watching the Mentalist this week, found a few torrents of it and I am becoming addicted to it!

i'm in england (btw we like ot be called english, not brittish - that relates us t the terrible government) but i havenlt had a chance to watch it

i might find some "unofficial" ways to watch it though, i could do with something a little lighter hearted. otherwise i'll make the world write me fluff till i'm feeling better!

I saw the first episode when i was in London, i really liked it (and it was a bit wierd to be seeing something first run over there lol)and so i've downloaded it here and hubby and i watched it tonight actually (i've got the others dl'd but wanted him to catch up. He liked it so looks like we'll be watching it on the tv, which is good, didn't wanna sit in front of computer lol...i do like it, there's something about it, plus after the third time watching it it grows on you lol. It is wierd seeing philip glenister doing the hugh laurie/house thing with the accent and all, i think that's a new trend now lol all these actors are switching spots i swear! :) anyways, yeah it's really similar to angel and buffy with some TW thrown in sorta if you squint lol but i do like it :)
