Chapter Fifty-two:  Showing

The next six weeks seem to fly by. The Doctor arranges with U.N.I.T. for Martha to sit her exams though nearly every university in the U.K. has been shut down since the first Cybermen invasion. Brilliant as she is, Martha passes with flying colors and achieves the rank of doctor.

U.N.I.T. also gives her a crash course on alien pregnancy and every bit of physiological data they have on the Doctor. She makes the decision to travel with us and be my personal medical attendant through the duration of the pregnancy. She also agrees to be the maid of honor at my wedding.

Chapter Forty-nine:  Sancutary

I have been in worse positions than cowering behind a desk with a gun and a man willing to defend me with his life and I have come through them all. Yet this time something feels extraordinarily different. This time I feel like I might really die. The screams below me in the hub are wrenching and I can smell the iron of blood and the sulfur of gunfire and the strange astringent smell coming from the EMP bombs as they detonate against the cybermen's casing.

And then the desk we are hiding behind is lifted by a cyberman and tossed over the railing. Owen leans forward so that he is blocking me from view. He raises his weapon and fires but not before the cyberman gets off a shot. The laser goes through his shoulder and out, singeing across my head. I smell the burnt hair before I feel the pain.

Chapter Forty-five:  Cardiff

When the TARDIS materializes in Cardiff it does so in an alley behind some sort of travel agency. The Doctor turns on the view screen and carefully scans the area. “I wonder why she landed here,” he muses. “I was aiming for the Millennium Center.”

Chapter Forty:  Changes

For some reason I cannot fathom the TARDIS has put my mum in the room next to the Doctor’s. When we walk into our room it’s to find a twin bed. “What’s going on?” I ask.

“I think the TARDIS is trying to respect your mother’s wishes,” he says with annoyance in his voice.

I frown. “It’s only for a few days,” I say. But I don’t like it either. I have gotten used to sleeping in the same bed with him, his arms bringing me comfort. I return to my old room, a few doors away from Mum’s. Even my bed is smaller. I am not happy with the TARDIS for making these changes.

Chapter Thirty-six:  Telling

We arrive on Earth, materializing behind the Powell Estate. When we left my mum had informed me that she was letting Dr. Jones stay in my room so she could be closer to the recovery effort, otherwise we would have landed the TARDIS in my room.

I am suddenly nervous. Telling my parents that I’m pregnant is not particularly something I want to do. My mum likes the Doctor, though she had her issues in the beginning and my dad respects him. But no parents want to hear that some older guy has knocked up their baby girl. Especially when last Mum knew, the Doctor and I hadn’t even slept together.

Chapter Thirty-two:  Mate

I step in front of the Doctor. “You will not harm my mate.”

“He does not concern me unless he interferes.”

I feel a feral grin come onto my face. My Doctor will always interfere. A light green mist begins to exude from the Sower in front of me, his presence expanding and encompassing my body. It strengthens around me, blocking the Doctor physically from me.

Chapter Twenty-eight:  Laying Claim

Finally there is no more we can do on Earth to aid in the recovery. The rest will be left to time. I kiss my mum and dad good-bye and insist on a quick trip to U.N.I.T. in the TARDIS to say good-bye to Benton and to Duncan Solomon, the name given to the young Kaled man. The Doctor informs me that Duncan means warrior and Solomon means peace. It is strangely fitting for this stranger I gave birth to.

Chapter Twenty-two:
Burning

I watch in a panic as time stops all around me. I can sense the coldness from the others, but I cannot feel it through the fire in my veins. My mind reaches forward towards the Dalek and sees that he spoke the truth. Somewhere, some when, some Rose who wasn’t me promised him she’d send him home.

Chapter Twenty-one:  Home

“Rose?” it grates out. “Rose?”

“What?” I manage when I recover from my shock, but my heart does not stop pounding in my ears. I feel the adrenaline dump into my system and every human instinct I have screams for me to run. I stay still.

Chapter Twenty:  Monster in the Rubble

“A Dalek? A Dalek here?” If there is one thing that could cool the Doctor’s ardor, or for that matter mine, it is that word. Dalek. Think about that word just for a moment. It starts out hard, it ends hard, and it has no right to have the softness of the L there in the middle that way, for there is nothing soft about a Dalek. Nothing at all.
